If You Had $2000 to Spend on Camera Gear… What Would You Buy?
We’ve done this hypothetical exercise the last couple of years in the lead up to Christmas and it has been a lot of fun. So I t would do it again.
Here’s how it works:
- I’m hereby giving each of your a hypothetical $2000 USD to spend on photography gear at Amazon. Very generous of me I know!
- Head over to Amazon’s Camera and Photo section and surf around and see what you’d buy with it (cameras, ldpshypoth-20ng, accessories – anything photographic goes).
- Come back here and in comments tell us what you’d buy with it – share a link to it on Amazon if you like and tell us why you’d buy it.
What would you buy?
- Perhaps it would include the dpshypoth-20://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZYF3LO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dpsgeneral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399369&creativeASIN=B003ZYF3LO”>Nikon D3100 – currently the most ‘wished for’ item in Amazons camera store
- Maybe a Canon EOS 7D – always popular on our X100 or X10 from Fujifilm (I think I’d pick up an X100 – pictured right – to see what all the fans are raving about)
- Or maybe you’d sink it all into the amazing Canon 85mm f1.2 II lens – one of the most lusted after lenses by Canon users
Or something else? Choose as many products as you like – just try to keep the total down under $2000!
PS: note: this is… strictly hypothetical (or your own) money!!!!!

That’s easy. The Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS Mark 2 lens. Except this is in $$$ and was I thinking in £££. In £££ it’s £1765… Back to the drawing board I suppose…

I would probably but these Elinchrom ranger quadra packs.
http://www.amazon.com/Elinchrom-EL-10290-1-Reflectors-Transmitter/dp/B002ECE9AY/ref=sr_1_3?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322229204&sr=1-3
I do realise that it gets to $2,090 but I would pay the extra $90 myself!
They’re a great half way between speedlights and studio strobes. Very portable, powerful for such a small unit.
You can also attach huge numbers of lighting modifiers, softboxes, grids, octabanks etc etc.
I’m genuinely considering it…

Since the Canon 70-200 f2.8L is over budget, I’d ‘settle’ for a 70-300 f4.5-5.6L. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040X4PQI/ref=s9_simh_gw_p421_d9_g421_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-6&pf_rd_r=07PJVPDWT638RYZXWZ10&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938731&pf_rd_i=507846

A Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L USM II for me, plus a Canon S100 to give as a present.
November 26th, 2011 at 1:10 am
I don’t know of a brand or model yet, but first I’d buy a camera — mine died in July! Then I would buy an external flash with the extra and send it on to one of my friends.
November 26th, 2011 at 1:22 am
Perhaps not the wisest choice:
Olympus E-5
November 26th, 2011 at 1:32 am
A couple of Canon T2i camera bodies and a couple of IS lenses.
These cameras are FANTASTIC at event photography and are dirt cheap so if you drop one from 500 feet you dont care.
The photos they take are identical with what comes out of the 5D.
too bad canon ruined the line with the T3. the T2i is far superior to anything else in the rebel line.
November 26th, 2011 at 1:33 am
I would buy a couple of speed lights, a kata camera bag,a couple of pocket wizards, Lights, and backgrounds, and some stands.
November 26th, 2011 at 1:43 am
I recently did exactly that. considering a slightly different USD/CHF exchange rate I got me a Canon EOS 7D and a Canon EF 24-70 2.8 L.
If I had another 2k I’d go for the
- Canon EF 100-400mm, f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
or the
- Canon EF 300mm f/4.0L IS USM
or on the wider end:
- Canon Objektiv EF 16-35mm, f/2.8L II USM
November 26th, 2011 at 1:44 am
Simples! Canon 7D + Sigma 70 – 200 f2.8 comes to about $2000.
November 26th, 2011 at 1:48 am
Now may be a good time to buy things other than cameras or equipment. 2012 is going to be a spectacular year for DSLR, video, and lenses. Anyone buying now is going to feel like a second class citizen by the end of next year. This year’s offerings are for the novice who does not know better and meant only to keep the camera companies cash flow up.
(BTW – the X100 is highly over rated. It does not make you ‘look cool’ because it is what people who can’t buy the real thing buys nor is it all that good as a camera IMHO. Can you say wannabe?).
November 26th, 2011 at 1:53 am
On Nikon.com refurbished, you can find some real deals saving hundred of $$ on stuff that is warranted the same as new. I think I would get a second D300S body and a 60mm f/2.8 to fill out my bag. If I had $3k, I could get the D700 and that lens.
November 26th, 2011 at 1:55 am
I’ve been wanting a Leica camera since I started photography, and I’d love a more compact camera as well. The X1 is both: http://www.amazon.com/Leica-X1-12-2MP-Digital-Camera/dp/B002NX13QC

A Sony A77. I have one on order. This is a game changer.
$1999.99

November 26th, 2011 at 1:57 am
I would use the two grand to pick up a slightly used 24-70/f2.8ED Nikkor lens (about $1625 today) and use the rest to pick up a good tripod and head.

$200 would make a dent in the wish list, here is where I would start; Pentax DA 10-17mm Fisheye lens, Pentax AF360F62 Flash, Phonenis 100mm f 3.5 Macro lens, and as many Cokin filters that I can get.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:06 am
Thinktank retrospective 30 camera bag–$200
nifty 50 lens–$100
eneloop rechargeable batteries + charger $125
Cactus v5 trigger set + one tranceiver-(I’d get from mpex, but whatever)–$125
Lumopro Lp160–I’d order from Mpex too–$175
a nice tripod, manfrotto or something–$200
With the remaining $1000 I’d buy as much lens as I could get. Preferably something something that can go macro.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:09 am
I would use the 2k for a “glass upgrade”. I currently have a 28-135. And as much as I want to replace my XTi, glass is more important. I would probably go with:
- Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
- Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Wow, that sucked up 2k rather quick, eh? Could use them on the cruise I’m getting on tomorrow!

Ciao!
November 26th, 2011 at 2:15 am
i would want a 5d MK II but it is over the budget. I’d rather pick the canon EF 100mm macro:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-100mm-2-8L-Macro-Digital/dp/B002NEGTSI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322233844&sr=8-1
and then add an olympus pen e-p3

the rest of the money could go for the accessories, eg. SD cards, a tripod, bag, etc.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:34 am
I would get a Canon 5d used or refurbished.

$2000 is not much when it comes to photography. All I still need for my kit are lenses that cost more than that. I’m saving for a TSE 24 f/3.5LII right now. Try adding a zero and I’ll have a nice answer for you.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:45 am
D700 no doubt.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:50 am
Like all others I would go for a new lens. Maybe the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for those days that I REALLY need a great telephoto lens.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:57 am
A second Nikon D90 body so I can shoot events with two, and an 18-200 VR Nikkor lens. That leaves about $500 for miscellaneous filters, studio lights, and a two-camera strap.
November 26th, 2011 at 3:02 am
I think I would go for a canon 7D and a flash kit. Maybe this one
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Speedlite-Diffuser-Rechargable-Batteries/dp/B00519CTJ0/ref=sr_1_12?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322236743&sr=1-12
extra money would also be fine to get a 24-70 f2.8 L lens.
the rest I think I have!
November 26th, 2011 at 3:11 am
Canon 24 – 70 mm lens
November 26th, 2011 at 3:17 am
I would love a really good lens (not sure which, the list is long) for my Canon 7D – sports/events? portraits? landscapes? But, I would love 1 really good strobe for my studio. Love my camera, another one would be nice as a backup or the T3 as an everyday carry around.
November 26th, 2011 at 3:20 am
I don’t need two thousand dollars, just two cents will do.
Hypothetically, would this post have been published with the same instructions if DPS did NOT receive a cut of the link revenue from Amazon?
November 26th, 2011 at 3:22 am
Hands down a nikkor 70-200 2.8 with VR which if I buy it refurbished from nikon is just under 2000.
November 26th, 2011 at 3:22 am
I’ve a good camera (D90) so I’d buy more lenses (I’ve only the kit 18-105mm one now) such as:
- Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G
- Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
And maybe a few more else (though I don’t think I’d use them so much)
- Micro Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G
- Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR
November 26th, 2011 at 3:27 am
Sigma 85mm 1.4 along with a Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM
November 26th, 2011 at 3:31 am
I just had exactly this situation! My D80 died about two months ago and I have never been happy with the low light capability of my Panasonic DMC-LX1 (although this has been a great camera otherwise), For $1900 I was able to take the huge step up to the Nikon D1700 AND get a Fuji X10. The Fuji is turning out to be a super little camera with excellent low light characteristics. The EXR technology is the real deal and I predict we’ll be seeing this soon in the big boys. I also like the “film” choices (Velvia is the way to go!) and the retro feel (I’m 65 so it feels like coming home). With the remaining $100 (more or less) I’d strongly recommend the Nikon f1.8 50 mm lens — a little wimpy from a build standpoint but tack sharp, great bokeh, and unbeatable for the price.
November 26th, 2011 at 3:41 am
I’ll have to throw in some extra, but I really want a Canon 7D. You don’t even have to gift wrap it. Thanks, Santa!
November 26th, 2011 at 3:54 am
Well, since I haven’t had a camera since my Olympus OM1 film camera that I received in college 30 yrs ago, I’d probably be happy with anything digital that comes with a macro, a zoom lens, and a flash.
Any suggestions from the crowd?

November 26th, 2011 at 5:39 am
First up: Nikon 105mm f/2.0D AF DC-Nikkor Lens
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-105mm-DC-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEOK/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322245543&sr=1-4
While some might go with the 105mm G, the advantage of the D lenses is they still have aperture rings. This makes them compatible both with my D7000 and my F4.
This lens comes highly recommended by wildlife and nature photographer John Shaw.
Since I’m still under budget, I think I’d fill out the order with a Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor Lens.
Again, a non-G lens so I can use it with my F4. I picked this because it keeps me under budget and ads a micro lens to my collection.
The reminder of the budget (after taxes and shipping) would probably go to another expensive strobe, flash trigger, or other off-camera lighting accessories.

If I wanted to start right now:
1. Sony A77 24.3 MP Digital SLR with Translucent Mirror Technology – Body Only – 1399,-
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Digital-Translucent-Mirror-Technology/dp/B005IHAICK/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322245416&sr=1-1

Sums to $1997,-
Picked quickly within 15 minutes.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:45 am
Having Nikon already, I would buy this:
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens for 1999,-
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-14-24mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCTCI/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322246548&sr=1-3-fkmr0
but my budget is prohibitive for further thoughts like this
November 26th, 2011 at 5:55 am
I will get the nikkor af-s 85 1.4 G, my dream lens for portrait
November 26th, 2011 at 6:04 am
This one’s easy since I’ve got quite a few photographic items sitting in my wishlist at Amazon already:
Nikon 35mm f1.8 $200
Tiffen Steadicam Merlin $800
Delkin Fat Gecko Double Knuckle dual suction cup auto mount $55
Delkin DDSCOPE sensor cleaning kit $98
Manfrotto 561BHDV monopod $290
Sekonic Digital Cinemate L-308DC meter $275
Azden wireless lavalier mic system $140
I’d take the remaining $142 or so and combine it with my own money to add a Scrim Jim, Green Screen and a Nikon AW-100 for those outdoorsy situations where I really shouldn’t be carrying the D7000.
November 26th, 2011 at 6:15 am
I would have to say a hensel studio lighting set. One of the few things i would like.
A set with 2 lights of 500ws minimal, and a hensel porty with ringflash. Awesome stuff !!
November 26th, 2011 at 6:20 am
I think I’d pick up the Canon 24-105 f/4.0L IS and a pair of the Canon 580 EX II’s

The good thing is I have a Minolta 50mm f/3.5 Macro lense I could add to it from my days of shooting the Minolta-Sony line!

Easy – I would buy a Canon XA10 Video Camera – http://www.amazon.com/Canon-XA10-Professional-Camcorder-Internal/dp/B004HW7DY8/ref=sr_1_3?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322277349&sr=1-3.
With more and more clients wanting video and photography work it is time to buy a dedicated video camera. The XA10 would be the perfect prosumer addition to any kit.
November 26th, 2011 at 2:33 pm
Definitely would be a Canon 24-70mm or the 100-400mm

I’d upgrade my Nikon D7000 to a D700. (Already have a X100 and highly recommend it!)
November 26th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
Hmmm, as it happens I did spend just under $2000 today… I got the Nikon 85mm 1.4G. Can’t wait to do some portraits!
November 26th, 2011 at 5:36 pm
I already have the canon 7D, 50mm 1.4 and a canon speed light 430EX II, now all i would need is the 24-70 2.8l and the canon speed light 580EX II.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:42 pm
I’d have to go with the 7D to get out of Rebel land
November 26th, 2011 at 5:43 pm
I’d kick in a few hundred bucks and pick up a 5D mkII.
November 26th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

but for the “snapshot” photography i´d choose this one, as i saw fantastic photos from my friend:

sometimes you just don´t want to carry your whole equipment and then this would be the camera of my choice – awesome photos and definitely a great price
November 26th, 2011 at 8:02 pm
If I had nothing yet, I’d buy:
K-r 549
Pentax DA* 50-135 849
Tamron 17-50 479
Lowepro slingshot 302 87,1
2 pack of 3rd party battery replacements 25,95
as I already own some gear (k-5, kit lens, fa50 1.4 and 135 3.5mm old russian Jupiter) I’d go for:
Pentax DA* 50-135 849
Pentax da ltd 15mm 509,95
Pentax da 100mm wr 599,95
November 26th, 2011 at 9:37 pm
Lots and LOTS of nice new glass…
OK, so 1 or 2 higher quality ones for my T2i, no point upgrading the camera until I have the nice lenses to put on it !!
November 26th, 2011 at 11:44 pm
Nikon D7000 with a 28-300mm VR lens.
November 26th, 2011 at 11:55 pm
Nikon D7000 with Nikon 28-300mm VR lens. If you get the timing right with instant rebates on a combo purchase you should have a couple hundred left over for 2 SanDisk 16 or 32GB Extreme Pro cards to fill the slots of the D7000.
November 27th, 2011 at 12:02 am
Hmm… I’d buy PIZZA! Lots of it… oh, and a second Canon 5DMKII, or maybe a 7D… uh huh
November 27th, 2011 at 12:50 am
Mac mini and the 27inch mac thunderbolt monitor. I am so sick of editing my photos on a 13 inch macbook pro. I am in the Army and on the go a lot, so the laptop is convenient, but I would really like a nice desktop setup. That or I would pay the difference for the 5D Mk II. My lenses deserve better than the 3Ti

so, there’s $100 yet
can I buy me some new remastered Pink Floyd albums?
November 27th, 2011 at 1:46 am
Well… If I had $2k dropped into my grubby little mitts, I’m not sure my choices would fit the mold or all be something Amazon would carry. I certainly don’t believe I’m 2nd class/rate because I don’t have the latest, greatest, or fastest tech toy ( photographic or otherwise) so that also colours my choices. I would pick out a gently used and “previously enjoyed” D70 body, the Tamron 28-75 fast zoom, some of the Westcott Apollo gear including their new octabox and strip lights, and a couple of additional backgrounds in shades of green and blue. The rest I would put toward a ticket to spend some time learning the art of portraiture from somebody with experience willing to take me on for a time as student, assistant, or just plain gopher.
Later days,
Brian

I been shooting about a year ago, i own a canon 50D, and this is one of the lens that i have in my wish list but it will take a while before i get it, everybody saying that this lens is good for a portrait shooting the Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II USM Lens.

I would buy my new canon 24-70 f2.8 L for. I think $1300, and the rest of the funds would go towards some filters and a new tripod.. But that’s a very hard choice to make, there are so many things I want , I want them all now!!!
November 27th, 2011 at 2:05 am
Definitely the Canon 85mm….would love to upgrade to the 5D MK II but you said only $2000.
November 27th, 2011 at 2:15 am

If I had that kind of money I would buy two lenses. The first would be a Nikon 80-200 f/2.8. I like to photograph birds in my back yard. the second lens would be a Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8 macro lens for taking pictures of insects and spiders.
November 27th, 2011 at 2:54 am
I would get a Nikon 80-200 F/2.8 for taking bird photos in my back yard and a Nikon AF-S 105 F/2.8 to take photos of insects and spiders and flowers in my back yard.

A Nikon 85mm 1.4G…. 1) if I could find one and 2) if they aren’t trying to gouge on the price.
November 27th, 2011 at 4:44 am
I’d love the “Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR” (since the VRII is over budget), and then I’d add on the “Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor” for fun!
November 27th, 2011 at 5:43 am
Who cares if they get something from Amazon for linking? How much do you pay to visit this website? Do what they want to keep it free as long as they don’t do popups.
November 27th, 2011 at 6:15 am
Funny you should pick $2000, that’s exactly what my wife and I got for an early Christmas present to spend on photo gear. I picked up the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, and gave my wife the rest of mine to get the IkeLite housing, lens port, wide angle dome, and video/strobe light system for her Canon 7D. That was pretty much the end of $4k.
November 27th, 2011 at 6:52 am
Easy. A Leica X1.
November 27th, 2011 at 7:41 am
-Two Canon 420EX Speedlites (second hand)
-A Canon 200DG Camera Bag
-A Canon RS60 E3 Remote Switch
-Canon 50mm F1.4
-Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro
-A Fotodiox 42″ 5-in-1 reflector
-2 LP-E8 batteries
-A Canon GB-E8 Battery Grip
-Adobe Lightroom 3
-2 Dolica 62″ Proline tripods
-A 32GB Class 10 SDHC memory card
-2 58mm polarizer filters
-A Kata KT A91E Reflex E Camera Strap
-58 & 67mm Canon lens hoods
-A large Rocket Air Blaster
And all of this stuff still only gets me up to $1845! If I wanted to use the full $2000 I’d probably look for some more expensive tripods.. No camera body for me, I’m not done shooting with my 550D yet!

November 27th, 2011 at 8:45 am
I’d buy a EF 17-55 2.8 IS and a EF 100 2.8 L IS macro
November 27th, 2011 at 9:19 am
Well….
Velbon UT 45L tripod, cos I hate tripods but like night photography so this would be good for that i think and portable, no idea if Amazon has it but I had been thinking of under $200.- and this fitted in!
Now for $2000.- well that’s easy
Lumix G3 Camera cos my G2 is really nice and this is even better! White ones on special @ $599
Lumix 7-14mm wide angle zoom for above…$888.98 is steal!
Lumix 100-300mm that gives you up to 600mm stretch on FX cameras and is stabilized! $499.97
That about does it…….
Cheers David
November 27th, 2011 at 10:29 am
I ask myself this very question all the time and always come up with the same answer……GLASS!!
I would love a new body 7D or 5D Mk ii but ya know the old canon 20D is doing a fine job, plenty sharp for what I’m doing. I can get a new body later since i still have a lot to learn. So I would put money into good lenses like the Canon 24-105 f/4L $960
Canon 135 f/2L $979
Well thanks for listening,
Jason
November 27th, 2011 at 11:02 am
Decisions, decisions. I have a 7D. My backup camera is a 20D. I would like a better backup camera: either a 60D or a T31.

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens is on my Christmas list and at just under $2000 I would be a happy lady!!
November 27th, 2011 at 12:32 pm
I’d grab a Canon 60D, the 50mm 1.4, a really nice tripod and a ball head. Those would all be direct upgrades from my Rebel, 50mm 1.8 II and Gorilla Pod
November 27th, 2011 at 12:47 pm
I need a great stable tripod outfit. this would be my choice. Plus Macro Nikon lens.

November 27th, 2011 at 6:46 pm
I reckon I’d go Sony. They have good glass and the SLT technology is fantastic. So I decided to go for the A35 for $549, a Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye for $609, Sony 20mm f/2.8 for $649, a Cokin P series 72mm filter holder for $17, a Cokin Graduated Neutral Grey ND8 0.9 Filter for $25, a Cokin Circular Polarizer, Norman ND-5 Neutral Density Filter Pack for $18, Lowepro SlingShot 100 AW for $37, Transcend 4GB Class 10 SDHC Card for $7, LensPEN Lens Cleaner + DigiKlear LCD Screen Cleaner + Precision Design Cleaning Kit for $16 and finally a Manfrotto 680B Monopod for $54 used.
In total it all comes down to $1,967.46 for a great camera, some great glass and a good set of filters. Also due to the APS-C sized sensor, the barrel distortion won’t be as extreme as it usually would on the 15mm Sigma.
November 27th, 2011 at 11:08 pm
A second hand Ef 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM mk1. Oh wait, I just did
November 28th, 2011 at 5:49 am
Oh how I wish I had that kind of money to spend. My $1,000 camera broke, it was 4 years old. Won’t turn on and a new battery doesn’t help. So, this is what I’d get with money left over..
I’d get the Sony NEX-5N Bundle {NEX-5N + 18-55mm Lens,
16mm Lens, 55-210mm Zoom Lens} & a remote commander and external flash. {with money left over}
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&identifier=S_NEX_Bundles#/NEX5N
or this
Canon EOS 7D EF-S 18-135mm lens kit {which would leave no left over money}
http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_249662_-1
The reason I added the canon is because the sony nex doesn’t have a view finder. I’m finding as I get older that I have a difficult time seeing the images on the lcd especially since I usually forget my reading glasses.
November 28th, 2011 at 9:24 am
Canon EF 24-105Lis to replace my ef 28-135is for beter portraits and rain protection with my eos 7D now that I live in the Netherlands.
November 28th, 2011 at 10:47 am
If I could source one, a Sony A77-SLT. (The factory in Thailand has been closed due to the recent flooding)
November 28th, 2011 at 1:07 pm
If I had $2000 I would spend it on:
- Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens
- Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens (a replacement for my 18-55mm kit-lens)
- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens
- Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM (a replacement for my nifty fifty)
- Manfrotto 498RC2 Ball Head (a replacement for my Oben BA-0 Ball Head)
Total price: $1,946.83
November 28th, 2011 at 1:35 pm
1st i will ask myself :what brand my close friends use the most:Nikon or canon because you don’t need to have it to have it all. This is what i did
I had $2000.00
So i got a 7D refurbished body around $1500.00
Then a 50mm f1.8 for around $100.00
Extra battery and a battery grip (under $100.00)
Zoom H4N $300.00
old manual nikon 135mm f2.8 $45.00
I just finished working on a long photography/documentary project.
All i did was borrowing my friends lenses for few hours. A wide angle and tele..70-200mm(that i dont actually like because it is heavy for video but good for photography)
Got a free monopod from my roommate.
I am saving money to buy : a LED light for vide (cheap), a cheap flash for photograhy,
a wide angle tokina
Bower 85mm f1.4
Canon 70-200mm Lf 4 for portraits
Old nikon manual lenses 24mm f2.8, 50mm f`1.4
Tripod,
glidecam
shoulder mount.
I am operational and getting gigs…
got to know what you want first
November 28th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
Sony Alpha A55 – simply for the video function. It would be nice to be able to go back and forth with one piece of equipment: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSLR-Camera-18-55mm-zoom/dp/B0043DKBTK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322448445&sr=8-1
Sigma 50mm f/1.4: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-50mm-EX-HSM-Sony/dp/B001B1RFZA/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322448505&sr=1-3 – because it takes gorgeous shots. I have the f/2.8 and it’s wonderful, but the light the f/1.4 brings in is amazing. I love this lens!
Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-120-400mm-4-5-5-6-Telephoto-Sony/dp/B003KGBMH6/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322448646&sr=1-3 – this lens will give me the distance I need to capture the wildlife that crosses our property. My 300 just isn’t long enough. We get deer, rabbits, coyote, and the random wicked heron.
November 28th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
I would spend it on an ef 24-70mm L of the 24-105 L to replace my wobbly 28-135is to suit better for kids photography at my kids school indoors.
November 29th, 2011 at 1:06 am
$2000.00 is a lot but I’ve had my eye on the Nikon 24mm-70mm Lens.
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-24-70mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCT3C/ref=sr_1_6?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322488685&sr=1-6
This is a dream lens for me to have, but currently I am unable to afford such a luxury item.

Hmm,with 2000$$ converted that to my currency around RM6.2k, I would buy a few ND Grads by Hoya amounting to 300$$ ,a new battery for my Canon 1DMKIV 200$ . A canon 50mm F1.2L around 3.9k . Then the remaining maybe a lenspen and a flash diffuser.
November 29th, 2011 at 6:50 am
I’d buy plane tickets to go somewhere fun and shoot something different. You folks are all WAY too hung up on gear. : )
November 29th, 2011 at 7:20 am
I would sell my 7D and use that money and the $2000.00 to get the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens and a used 5D mark II OR use the $$ from all and save more $$ to get the new EOS-1D X
November 29th, 2011 at 7:34 am
A77………I used a friends….I’m in love (again), and have the lenses for it (from my A350….I know, some problems, but hey, it’s only 2,000).
November 29th, 2011 at 7:49 am
So, do you just want to see my B&H wish list I gave my husband? Tops on it are Canon’s 24-70 f2.8, a Zoom H4 for audio recording, the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, and Wescott’s 6-1 Deluxe Illuminator Reflector Kit. If I could go higher, I’d throw in a second camera body, probably a t3i, though a 5d or 1d would be sweet. (Another life, perhaps. Though I’m pretty sure he’s springing for some of that first list. His bonus was really good this year.)
November 29th, 2011 at 7:53 am
First I would soak up some lighting education, preferably a workshop. Then with the balance I would purchase studio lighting. At this point I don’t know exactly what I need
probably some Canon 580 speedlights, some softboxes, stands, etc.
November 29th, 2011 at 8:10 am
The only thing I want right now is a LUMIX Vario PZ 14-42mm/f3.5-5.6 lens as an everyday shooter (to 20mm is fun but restrictive. Unfortunately the big hangup is that they appear to have been delayed again and won’t be shipping til Jan 2012. >:(
The rest of the money would be spent on vacation, lack of gear isn’t what’s holding me back, I just need to get out to get some pictures.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:34 am
I spent my $2000 twice, and bought a Canon 5D and the 5D Mark II. Biggest reason was the full frame sensors at the time. With the new camera’s from Sony and Nikon, who knows. All I really know is that the final results are what you as a photographer you have to live with. The Nikon D90 that I bought for my daughter I think takes sharper pictures for a fact, but the overall final picture seems to look better from Canon. I weddings, the bride is sharp, similar to the way my old Zeiss would look, but when it comes to equipment, you have to make a decision and live with it. Again, my tests were “How does the final Product Look As A Complete Package.) With the full sensor, I find the overall picture is what is important. Are the colors smooth and well blended. I always used Fujicrome in the seminars I use to put on. I always would expose the film 1/3 stop under exposed. That is how I liked my pictures. Lowell

Jonne I have the canon 50mm f1.4 it is a awsome lens after that i would get canon 70-200 2.8 L and canon 85mm f1.2 lenses and a nice light weight trypod more than likly a composit trypod with a good ball head from Kirk Enterprises a realy good place to buy ballheads chech them out online.
Don.
November 30th, 2011 at 2:37 am
I’d buy the NEX-5n with the kit lens and spend the other $1250 and fly to Rome, Prague and Paris in order capture some great shots rather than drooling over arbitrary camera gear.
November 30th, 2011 at 4:24 am
i wanted to get this lens for some time now.
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-135mm-DC-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00006I5J4/ref=sr_1_12?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1322587303&sr=1-12
November 30th, 2011 at 11:24 am
A Pentax 10-17 and a used KA 50mm f1.2 should eat the $2,000.
November 30th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
Hmm, one of two scenarios:
1. Either buy lenses, in which case:
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Macro (and buy filters with the rest of the $$$)
2. A round-the-world plane ticket to see & shoot the beauty of this world (that counts as spending towards photography, right?
)
December 1st, 2011 at 1:30 pm
The 1:5 macro from Canon and all the accessories to make it work.
December 1st, 2011 at 1:54 pm
MORE REACH!
Sadly, the $2000 is a little short for that 600mm f.4, so I’ll settle for:
Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Autofocus VR Zoom Nikkor Lens
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005LEOO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=barnik-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B00005LEOO

For 2 grand, I just bought two of these. Have to have 2x of everything.

December 2nd, 2011 at 3:00 am
Simple…
Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and DIGIC 4 Imaging (Body Only)
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
there is $2000
December 2nd, 2011 at 3:29 am
I have the Canon 50D now but I don’t have a really “wide” angle lens because my 17-40mm lens is more like a 27-64mm lens due to the APS-C sensor. So I would add a couple hundred bucks to your $2,000 and buy a full frame body (Canon 5D II) and utilize my 17-40 as a true wide angle lens!
December 2nd, 2011 at 3:29 am
I’d simply buy the Nikkor 85mm 1.4G
December 2nd, 2011 at 3:54 am
It’s not on Amazon yet, but I would wait and put it towards the upcoming Nikon D800!
December 2nd, 2011 at 4:13 am
Well, I have found prices a wee bit better than Amazon, although I must admit I do most of my shopping there. I would get a Nikon D7000 refurbished body and a new, or nearly new Nikon AF-D 80-200 2.8 ED lens. I’ve committed to photographing my stepson’s college football games, and I’ve learned that I need a little more capability than I currently have for cloudy or late afternoon/evening games when the light isn’t the best. Although the 70-300 4.5-5.6 with VR-II does pretty well on my D90, I think the f/2.8 lens will be a little better, especially on a D7000.
December 2nd, 2011 at 4:25 am
Sony 24 -70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras.
I work for Zeiss in the US and had the extreme pleasure of using this lens for 8 weeks on loan from Zeiss Germany. An extremely fast & silent lens, with “buttery bokeh”
December 2nd, 2011 at 4:40 am
I would go for Sigma 50-500. Just what I need. A lot of times I just cant take more then one lens, and this one would be just perffect. Off course adding 2x converter to it, would still be under 2$
http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-Teleconverter-Canon-Mount-Lenses/dp/B000CD8BIS/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322761120&sr=1-4
December 2nd, 2011 at 5:13 am
I would probably put a Canon EF 500mm L IS on my rewards card and use the $2000 as my first payment on the card!
December 2nd, 2011 at 5:35 am
I have been wanting this for a long time. Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II Tilt-Shift Lens
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-TS-E-24mm-f-3.5-L-II-Tilt-Shift-Lens-Review.aspx
December 2nd, 2011 at 6:19 am
Nikkor 85mm 1.4G and an SB700.
December 2nd, 2011 at 6:54 am
I would go for a Pentax K5 and a DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 lens. I think that would about cover the whole 2K. Thanks Santa, See ya soon!!!
December 2nd, 2011 at 7:23 am
An iPhone 4s.
The rest of the money I’d spend on some good wine.
Most folks that have a fancy camera can’t take an interesting photo to save their life.
Just look at many of the photos on Flickr done with the latest DSLR.
I can take a better photo than most people with just a crappy phone/camera.
It’s not the camera folks, it’s the photographer.
December 2nd, 2011 at 7:39 am
what a weird exercise, doesn’t dps preach not getting hung up on gear, and isn’t this all about increasing clickthrough revenue for dps? why not look through dwi if you want gear that you can afford with $2k?
yeah yeah support your guy and all that but this is clearly a money making exercise that sadly points people to where you wont get the best bang for buck.
vendor neutral please!
December 2nd, 2011 at 8:17 am
For $2,000 I would finally be able to buy a Nikon D7000 with 18-105mm lens, an extra battery, a Lowepro sling bag, 2 memory cards.
The rest: jacket, shoes, and granola bars.
I’ll be away for a week…….and just walk, walk and shoot!
December 2nd, 2011 at 1:10 pm
I would buy a Canon 5D MarkII! I am dreaming of it every night.
December 2nd, 2011 at 1:33 pm
I would buy me a Canon 5D Mark II, i dream of it every night. Unfortunately i have lost my job and now it really is just a dream…..!

Camera+flash cost me this 2k$, in our siberian city its a great deal
December 2nd, 2011 at 8:29 pm
I’d buy a Canon 7d with a 18-135mm from http://www.gigantti.fi/product/kamerat/jarjestelmakamerat/EOS7D18135KIT/canon-eos-7d-digitaalinen-jarjestelmakamera and then of course this http://www.scandinavianphoto.fi/product/item.aspx?iid=9804957 ! Maybe also a remote control.
December 3rd, 2011 at 1:09 am
I want to add additional flash photography support to my gear. I have been trying out a lot of setup and this is what I’d like to get:
Thinktank retrospective 30 camera bag – 200
Sigma 50mm 1.4 for my Canon 7D: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-50mm-Canon-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0018ZDGAC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322834259&sr=8-1
California Sun Bounce Micro Reflector
Extra Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash
Westcott 45″ Round Halo Light Modifier stands and supports

WHY WOULD I BUY THESE?
These are the items I’ve been longing for. Nikon P500 would have been a cool gift for me, but $2,000 is my ticket to photography. Otherwise, I would have to borrow money from my mother-in-law. Please save me from that embarrasment!
December 3rd, 2011 at 10:08 am
1. Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens

December 3rd, 2011 at 3:46 pm
easy, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (USED to meet budget haha)
Reason: to never have to deal with the hassle of renting for a shoot. I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to renting this lens yet I love it so.

December 4th, 2011 at 7:03 am
I would purchase a 50 mm lens ($150). I also would buy 3-5 backgrounds ($250), a studio lighting setup ($150), 3 Yongnuo YN-560 Speedlight Flashes ($280), set up for flashes remotes, etc, ($150), Nikon D7000 Camera body ($1000), Tax($118.80). That would leave less than $2 left.
December 4th, 2011 at 7:28 am

This set is being sold by Sunset and I know alot of photographers don’t like to buy kits but I’ve found that sometimes it’s okay.
December 5th, 2011 at 4:43 am
Dear sponsor,
– Sigma 150 mm f/2.8 macro EX DG APO HSM for Nikon
1. for 2000 $ I want Nikon Nikkor AF 200 mm f/4D MICRO IF-ED

December 5th, 2011 at 5:41 pm
I would use it towards a Canon 5D Mark II body. I’d consider selling my T2i to cover the other $500-800. The 5D II is such an amazing camera!! If I were to have any extra from my T2i, I would use it on a 50mm lens (preferably f/1.4)
December 5th, 2011 at 8:23 pm
I’d spend it on a trip to somewhere with interesting scenery.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:04 am
Hands down – Nikon 70-200 f2.8
December 6th, 2011 at 2:57 am
I would go with the either the:
Canon 7 D or the Canon 5 D Mark II (I’d pay the extra on these)
or the
85mm f/1.2 II lens this is primo!!! This would make my Christmas complete!!!
Thanks for the dream!
December 6th, 2011 at 4:08 am
Nikon d7000
December 6th, 2011 at 4:46 am
I would definately buy the wide angle Nikon lens to complete my setup with my Nikon. I bought the camera and lens combo and have my older 8 megapixal Olympus camera with my HUGE telephoto lens I cant give up bcause I can’t really afford anymore cameras or lenses. So that would make me happy for my wildlife and landscape photography. Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-14-24mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCTCI/ref=sr_1_16?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1323106940&sr=1-16

Why? IT IS SONY!!!!!! Shooting with a Sony is like a man driving a Ferrari, never get involved in arguments about cars, you know better. (Keep on dreaming)
December 9th, 2011 at 1:46 am
Nikkor 24-70 F2.8
December 18th, 2011 at 12:19 am
I’d use the money for a trip to some exotic place where I could take some photos. I’d use my trusty old Nikon D40 which still takes amazing shots even with the kit lens. It’s not the camera, it’s the photographer.
January 22nd, 2012 at 6:21 am

This is exactly what I am planning to do with a little bit of the money from my summer job (I’m a university student).
I am also a novice, having only ever used old point and shoots. I got to try a t3i last summer and was blown away. So, to start…
1. a nikon d5100 body
2. nikon 50mm 1.8G lense
3. AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
4. That leaves about $300 for various accessories such as bags, protectors etc…
