12 Stunning Silhouette Shots
One of our most popular posts on this site is How to Photograph Silhouettes.
Today I thought I’d add to the theory of the topic by posting some examples of silhouettes to give a little inspiration to take some of your own.

I am, in fact, a silhouette fan. And for exactly the same reason you do. It’s a photo that interact with the viewer. Really inspiring your post.

I just did a post on this on my blog too. Mine was over a week ago and discussed how I achieved and edited my beach silhouettes. I really love some of these that are not even beaches – just every day scenes.
It has inspired me to try some away from the beach too.
Here is a link to my tutorial in case this can help anyone – especially on the editing side of it:

I love silhouettes as well! These shots are really nice…makes me want to work harder to achieve more like them…with more contrast. (mine are not as rich looking):(
July 19th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Wow, all of them are stunning and so different and creative! But the first one is just amazing!
My attempt back when I shot in Aperture Priority mode:

I just used the exposure compensation set to -1.0 and it helped to get the effect.

You can even see the sailor pulling the ropes on the yaught.
March 27th, 2009 at 12:40 am
The problem with silhouette photos is that they can become clichés very easily IMO. Here we can see some that definitely aren’t
I like the photo with the owl, the cyclists, and the bridge+traffic light most.

Great shots, everyone.
This is my favorite silhouette shot:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hypnoeyez99/3263936631/
I snapped it while we were driving by this refinery on our way home from a shoot trip. I took it while hanging out my friend’s car window while driving down the freeway.
March 28th, 2009 at 2:42 am
I love silhouette photos! The one with the bikers on the beach doesn’t look quite real though. It looks like they were cut out and pasted on. When you zoom in, why does it look like the first biker has seams?
March 28th, 2009 at 5:03 am
Beautiful pics. Each one is unique.

I love your news letter. I really like the way one cover page can take me into the equivilant of a college course by just cliking on a link. The clear depth of each process that you include from start to finish stirs my creative juces. I am a beginner and your knowledge is helping me to not only take better photos but to love doing it! Thanks, Jeanne Kamps

Very impressed with the creativity of these contributions. The subject matter can become cliched, like anything else that’s overdone. Living near the Pacific Coast has provided me ample opportunities to create silhouettes. I hope I’ve managed to escape that trap with my work. See these examples for yourself:

I don’t think it’s possible for me to take silhouettes… just not enough knowledge in photography… I see the actual sight but I can’t capture it … usually too dark… or something else..
August 7th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Sharp intake of breath! Just had a shock when I saw the picture taken of the clock face in Paris with the two figures in front as I have the exact same image! At first I thought it was my photo, but then remembered mine only has one figure in it. I took it years ago with my 35mm SLR and I’m sure it was a total fluke – it remains one of my favourite images. Usually so self critical, I can’t fault this one.
How cool! We were both inspired by the same thing!
These pictures are all amazing. Congratulations everyone!

hi there. I really wanted to learn how to take good pictures. I already got Canon 500D and I have already took some shots, but I am not satisfied with the results. Can you please help me on what software do I need so that my pictures will be good like the pros. Thank you so much.

You images are absolutely stunning…. I can’t say how much I liked them. There was something even spiritual about the way you captured those scenes. Extremely good pictures.

Perhaps no harm was meant, and I mean not to start trouble, but I don’t care for remarks such as “I have seen better”. I think it more useful to encourage someone to develop their potential talent, but offering positive statements maybe with a useful tip, of a photograph that someone was obviously proud enough to offer to view in a public forum. This person should not be discouraged. I speak up because I love photography to the point that I photograph anything I can find endlessly, ….on my iphone, because at this time I cannot even afford a point and shoot, let alone a serious camera. But that does not daunt my aspiration to be a photographer when the time is right, and to be as creative as I can be, going around the obvious limitations of a 3.2 megapixel camera phone without a flash. I just use different editing programs, be as creative and original as I can, and I am quite proud of some of my creations, and have recieved many compliments on my photographs.
Please encourage art.
Thank you.

Took this one about 2 years ago and need to try for some more.

One of the things I love about dps is the inspiration I get from reading about new ideas and old ideas I’ve forgotten about. Thanks to this article I am going to work on capturing my toddler son in a sillhouette play composition. He’s growing so quickly I need to get all the shots I can using different creative approaches before its too late and he’s all grown up . Thanks DPS!

All the sil shots are impressive. Hawk’s was significant to me because this did not use direct sun or moon light. Really stunned with the colour! Great thinking, blew the box away!!

I think the two best of the photographs above are the black and white of the child running away from the camera, the shadow is perfect. The second is the amazing sky with four people and their bikes. The things that I notice the most about these images is the colours, reflections and shadows that take the silhouettes to the next level.
My personal favourite is a shot I took a few years ago of my dad shooting a sunset up in the Lake District here in England…

How come silhouette photo’s are so appreciated? I made an enormous amount of shots at an outtatown wedding in Indonesia, all great photo’s (ahem) but my fave indeed is one of my son and some relatives in the canoe taken against the sunset, a bit like photo #7…I believe it’s because it creates some sort of intimacy that most people can relate to, as you can tell from all the enthusiastic replies! Lovely examples.

I think silhouettes are a lot of fun, and very instructive on how to to learn photography. Without really thinking about them as silhouettes, I’ve been taking them for some time now. I imagine that we all have, based on some of the examples put up so far.
I’ve learned a lot from reading Rowse’s DPS articles. But this is the first time that I read one on silhouettes. The linked article is very instructive. But, mainly, it is just being aware of their existence that I find instructive. I look through shots of myself and others and see them now with a new eye. I see how they both expose and hide. They bring drama by understating detail.
I LOVE silhouettes. Thanks for making me aware of them.
Here are two beach scenes from my folder of last summer.
