Win a Bokeh Kit: Competition
Today we’re giving away 6 great little kits to help you create some stunning Bokeh effects from Bokeh Masters Kit. Thanks to Udi Tirosh (follow him on Twitter here) for this offer. Here he is to introduce the concept behind the kits and to introduce the competition.
The Challenge
A while back DPS had an article about creating and using shaped bokeh as a creative drive. Taking that concept forward I built a product called the Bokeh Masters Kit which enables creating “bokeh images” in an easy and convenient way.
When I launched the Bokeh Masters Kit I needed to create a strong image which will clearly show how distant blurred dots become shaped bokeh objects.
Process and Setup
To make the bokeh effect work you need to have some highlights that you can take out of focus. Each such out-of-focus dot takes the shape of the hole on the bokeh adapter. A common way to create those highlights is to use LEDs. This is a great option as LEDs are small, cheap and can be bought in a “string form” for holiday’s home decoration. Indeed I started with LEDs. My first images were of my little daughter using a Christmas LED string as backdrop.

I loved the effect, but wanted something more. I wanted hundreds of little distant blurred dots to become hundreds of little shapes.
While working on another project I noticed that wrinkled tinfoil reflects many, many spots of light. This is just what I needed. It took little time to create a screen made from foam board and tinfoil.
I used a very simple 2 strobe setup to take the image: one flash with a CPU cooler gridspot was placed above R2D2 to light it from above. Another gridded strobe was set on the floor for fill and spilling some light on the background.
This worked out pretty nice and I got literally hundreds of little envelopes.

I did a second image with the same concept only using hundreds of tiny streetlight people.

The Giveaway!!!!
To kick things off, DPS will be giving away six Masters Edition kits.
To enter all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. Make sure that in the email field of your comment you leave a valid email address so we can contact you. One entry per person only please!
We’ll randomly select 6 winners from the comments 2 weeks from today and notify winners via email. If you can’t hold your breath that long, just order the kit here.
Lastly – here’s a quick picture of how the kid attaches to your lens.

Check out more of the type of images that you can achieve with this little bokeh kit here.

March 10th, 2010 at 3:26 am
I’ve always wanted to try this!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:27 am

March 10th, 2010 at 3:27 am

March 10th, 2010 at 3:29 am

March 10th, 2010 at 3:29 am

March 10th, 2010 at 3:29 am
These are awesome. I’ve tried a DIY version before and the results weren’t that impressive. This would be a great kit in a photographer’s creative arsenal.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:29 am
Looks like lots of fun
March 10th, 2010 at 3:29 am
nice!
I wanted one of this but I was to lazy to build it my own. Good luck to everybody!

March 10th, 2010 at 3:30 am
I’m in. A kit like this seems like it could be a lot of fun.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:30 am

March 10th, 2010 at 3:30 am
SQUEEEE!!! Excitement abounds! I love shaped bokeh!!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:30 am
Shaped bokeh is such a fun twist. I’ve made my own covers but they always get beat up and I only get to use them once or twice. I’d love to have this kit!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:30 am
Always looking for ways to generate more intimate shots, and this is a great way to do it.
Thanks.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:30 am
meeee!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:31 am
I’d LOVE to win a Boken kit!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:31 am
I’ve been trying to make shaped Bokeh with paper and scrapbooking cut outs for a while now. This is a fantastic idea!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:31 am
Yes please! I’ve been reading so much about bokeh, but have not waded into the waters myself yet…
March 10th, 2010 at 3:31 am
I never got around to making my own but always thought it would be fun to play with.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:31 am
Love the R2-D2, looks great with the bokeh applied to it.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:32 am
Interesting technique. I just wonder which lens diameter this set will fit on.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:32 am
Very cool idea. I’ve had typical bokeh in some of my photos, but nothing as cool as this.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:33 am
Adorable little-girl portrait, perfect. Clever device, no muss, no fuss
March 10th, 2010 at 3:33 am
Joining in the fun…
March 10th, 2010 at 3:33 am
I’d love to be a winner, but I think I might buy a kit anyways; I never knew such beautiful bokeh could exist. It might also be the spur I needed to replace my old f/1.8 with a f/1.4.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:34 am
Hm… I feel the hand of Udi in this contest!
Cool
March 10th, 2010 at 3:35 am
Those bokeh’s are awesome!..will surely like to try them out!!
Hope i win!!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:35 am
I’m in!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:36 am
Can’t get enough bokeh
March 10th, 2010 at 3:36 am
Ooooh neat!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:37 am
Nice!
I tried it some months ago. I made some circular bokeh

And then I tried carving a triangle — this is the result:
There are a lot of creative uses of bokeh, and I’ve seen a lot of good ideas in this forum post some time ago (it’s a good place to start if you never made one of this shots!).
March 10th, 2010 at 3:37 am
I have always wanted to try this but haven’t. Awesome.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:37 am

Great give-away! I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:39 am
sweet! hopefully i win!!! i love this website, so much useful info!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:40 am
Wow! I have always wondered how photographers were able to create shots like that. I can’t wait to try this out!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:40 am
Okeh bokeh.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:40 am
I ever tought it was a post production effect… great!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:40 am
I’ve tried making one of these in true DIY style, but to say it was not secure on the lens would be an understatement. I would definitely make use of this kit, but am saving my few photography budget pennies for my next body. A win would be great!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:40 am
This looks really, really interesting! Well done!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:41 am
Neat! I do enjoy bokeh, but have trouble achieving the effect myself.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:41 am
Would be AMAZING to learn about this more!!!!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:41 am
Way to take a cool idea and bring it to market!! Wishing you the best on your endeavors!!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:42 am
Pick me!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:42 am
I’ve had so much fun making my own, but this would make it so much faster.
March 10th, 2010 at 3:42 am
Awesome, so cute!
March 10th, 2010 at 3:42 am
Lens caps with holes. Wheeeee!

March 10th, 2010 at 3:59 am
What an amazing effect! No photoshop either…
March 10th, 2010 at 3:59 am
Ohhh, I love the radiation symbol. I think a Bio-hazard would have looked downright wicked. Although I doubt either would ever receive much use.

This is a great idea. I think all winners should send photographs taken using this Masters Edition to the makers so that they could use them in product publicity and advertising. I certainly would be very happy to do this if I’m lucky enough to have my name drawn out of the hat.

March 10th, 2010 at 4:23 am
this would be a fun kit to use
March 10th, 2010 at 4:24 am
I tried making this with an art knife and some black paper. It’s more difficult than it seems, as I have 10 thumbs (: The results are great though, once you get the hang of it.

Yup, I like these kind of sugar, so I just ordered my Demo version; but hey, hopefully I get to win this one too and get me a Masters kit. I will report with photos when I receive my ordered demo kit.
Thanks for a reminder and for the link.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:33 am
Cool effect! I’ve never seen one of these kits before. Thanks for the information.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:34 am
I want one!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:34 am
This is a very cool effect. I’d love to use it for portraits. Thanks so much for making it available to us as a giveaway!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:34 am
I would love to have a kit and give it a try! I have plenty of Christmas lights!!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:34 am
Rubber band is included, well, it was in mine anyway. I’ve used it once (on a borrowed camera, as I don’t have a lens with a wide enough aperture to use it) It also came with a cool little storage wallet that can be put together (I taped mine) and a bunch of disks, and some blank disks that you can use to create your own shapes. Here’s an example (if the adding image tool works) that I did.
Um, I will also voluntarily withdraw from the contest please. I have one and love it, I’d like others to win one just in case I got drawn for a second. Cheers!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:35 am
This has been on my project list and this kit would be just the thing to get it bumped up on the list.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:35 am
Nice piece of kit!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:38 am
This might just be the tool I’ve been looking for to find my passion for photography again!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:38 am

March 10th, 2010 at 4:40 am

March 10th, 2010 at 4:48 am
Oh man, would I love one of these. I assume it’s supposed to go over a 50mm prime? Oh, well. My kit lens is 18-55; I can set it to 50 for this purpose.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:49 am
never tried it… but seems so enigmatic looking…
March 10th, 2010 at 4:49 am
Now that’s cool. Please enter me. Thanks.

March 10th, 2010 at 4:52 am

March 10th, 2010 at 4:56 am

March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 am
Show me the kit! Please please please.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:57 am
@Andrew
“Oh man, would I love one of these. I assume it’s supposed to go over a 50mm prime? Oh, well. My kit lens is 18-55; I can set it to 50 for this purpose.”
The problem with that is it doesn’t matter so much what focal length you have, as long as you have a wide aperature. As most kit lenses don’t open wider than f3.5 or 4 it doesn’t tend to work well (at all) on them. You need to be open to about f2.8 or wider to work properly. In theory you could build your own kit with a smaller hole to shoot through (the hole must be big enough not to vignette your photo, but smaller than the aperture of the lens) .
This is why I’ve only used mine on a borrowed lens, I haven’t got a lens that opens wide enough yet.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:58 am
I really like the hearts in the portrait background. That’s really a great backdrop.
March 10th, 2010 at 4:58 am
This is really funny… I’m doing a 365 Days of Self Portraits (themed) so each week I choose a theme, one week ago I did the bokeh week. What’s funny about it is that I mention in my Bokeh Post how to create a bokeh machine as I called it and also have a link to the bokeh masters site to illustrate it.
It will be great to win one of this. I was almost ready to buy one.
Here it is one of the photos from that week. Love the little hearts!!!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:58 am
I also couldn’t ever get it to work out right. It be nice to have one that works!
March 10th, 2010 at 4:58 am
This is awesome, wish me luck
March 10th, 2010 at 5:01 am
oooh me me me!
March 10th, 2010 at 5:01 am
I did this with fireworks about two years back! I made pretty heart-shaped bokeh with some random construction paper. Definitely not as nice as the little kit :]
March 10th, 2010 at 5:03 am

March 10th, 2010 at 5:08 am
Oh, I saw these on another site too and didn’t win. Fingers crossed because these look awesome. I use the creative aperture kit on my lensbaby, but I’d really like to use one of my other lenses at times.
March 10th, 2010 at 5:08 am

March 10th, 2010 at 5:43 am
I would love to have this!!! I’ve tried this a bit on my own with some mixed results, but haven’t attempted it again since getting my prime lens a month or so ago. These would be so much better than my hand cut (and hand held!) templates.

Great photos Udi. Thanks to DPS for the contest. Good luck everyone.
March 10th, 2010 at 5:45 am

Needless to say I’d love to try it out myself.

March 10th, 2010 at 6:37 am
So many posts already!!
Hehe, well seems like a very nice concept and definitively a great idea.
I sure would love to win a kit. Probably going on a 2 weeks bokeh frenzy, not talking to my family or friends unless their are in front of distant lights, but it will be for the greater good!

Pretty cool. Would love to win one.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:42 am
I want it!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:44 am
I stood forever at the local hobbycraft store looking at all the shaped punches trying to work out which was more cost effective…this kit or all the punches and the plastic card to make it myself. The kit wins every time but a free one would be even better!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:44 am
I would LOVE to win this kit! The images look so fun!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:45 am
This looks like great fun! I think tree leaves on a sunny day can give you similar effects too!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:46 am
I’ve tried a DIY version of this and gotten mixed results. I would love the chance to add this to my kit.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:46 am
Wow…..I’ve tried to do this myself without any greater result.
I got a few ideas running through my head right now……………………
March 10th, 2010 at 6:48 am
This looks like a lot of fun to play around with. I can think of some shots to try already…

March 10th, 2010 at 6:56 am
holy boken that’s a lot of comments!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:56 am
What a great idea to actually make and market a ‘bokeh kit’… so much easier than punching paper and dealing with finding all the different paper punches!!!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:58 am
I love it when beautiful effects are acheived using the simplest of hardware. Fingers crossed!
March 10th, 2010 at 6:58 am

March 10th, 2010 at 7:59 am
I made my first bokeh photo in 2007 when I read an article about it in the Photojojo newsletter. This was the result:

It would be great to switch from black cardboard to something more durable though

I have *just* bought a nifty fifty and would love to try it again, perhaps without all the hassle I went through last time! Really cool kit, Udi.

Bokeh is a Japanese word. Bokken is a wooden practice sword in Japanese. I read here ( http://www.martinbaileyphotography.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2750 Martin Bailey ) that bokeru means to become senile, fuzzy with age… wooden headed? to blurred images? to my very own…what was I commenting on again?
March 10th, 2010 at 11:02 am
Me me!
March 10th, 2010 at 11:04 am

March 12th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Wow a simple and well made bokeh kit! I surrender my own pathetic efforts of cutting my own bokeh shapes to this amazing kit! No more worries of jagged edges of my own shaped holes, no more using tape to keep the sheets on my lenses….I want this master kit!!!! Bokeh?
March 12th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
This would be great to add to my camera case.

March 12th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
When my oldest son was born, my mom bought a kit that had a bunch of filters. She could make some real interesing pictures of him. SOme showed him in different formats and some just showed his face all over the picture. I wish that I could find this filter kit that is hidden somewhere in one of her closets. I would like to have your filter set, they would make interesting backgrounds for pictures. If I don’t win it, maybe soon I can afford to buy one after I get back to work.
March 12th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
its kind of interesting…how does that thing do the magic? *__*
March 12th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
AWESOME! absolutely love bokeh! they really add more excitement to a otherwise normal photo. having those filters would be alot of fun!
March 12th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
Really cool… gives a totally different depth to any simple potrait/ action shot…. However, the background needs to be absolutely clear for it to have a good effect….
March 12th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
Amazing! I’d love one of those!

I hope I win!!!!

I have tried this a few times, but all I have been using is a peice of cardboard with a shape cut out in front of my lens. I can tell you, its quite hard to hold the camera and cardboard and take the shot at the same time! One of these things would be great!
here’s a link to a few of my attempts

March 13th, 2010 at 5:00 am

I see you have alot of entries for this but i thought I would post my name and give it a shot. We had 13 inches of snow in our area of Texas this year and I got some fantastic shots of something I would have had to go up north for. I used my manual 50mm 1.2 on my Nikon and most of the shots at night were my favorite. I can only imagine the possibilities I would have had with a string of leds, this kit, and that mound of snow! Please enter me into the drawing! Thanks!
