What’s On Your Background?
Capital One’s popular tag line is, “What’s in your wallet?” and that got me thinking. And thinking has lead to this post. My question is simple and two fold.
- What’s on your background on your computer?
- Why is it there?
I’ll start things off with the current background image on my travel laptop.
And as for why it’s there…..I took this picture while on a recent trip to Peru. I had never seen macaws in the wild before and the vivid colors of their feathers against the green canopy of the rainforest amazed me. Being able to capture this one in flight (as well as having it positioned in the frame so it doesn’t interfere with other desktop icons) is a reminder of that trip and my sense of wonder that I hope to never lose.
Ok, it’s your turn! Post a link to your background picture in the comments section below and then let us know why it’s there.

First, awesome shot! Saw a few of these when I went to Costa Rica and they are very hard to shoot in flight because of all the trees.
Right now my background is kinda boring: I did a montage of a few Canon 5D pics and put them as a background image to see which one I liked best. I have noticed that the longer I look at one of my picture, the more I see all the mistakes and possible points of improvement. So by putting some of my pics on the background I am sure to auto-analyze my shots a few times a day!
My biggest problem is that my screen aspect ratio does not match my camera (of course!) so all pics have to be cropped in a certain way which, most of the time, cripple them. :-(

Nice action shot! Hope to see these birds one of these days.
My MacBook Pro background is a close-up portrait of my fiancé, taken at the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina. Here’s the link:

It was also my first real attempt at using Photoshop to retouch a photo. I used the surface blur filter. If anyone has constructive feedback on the composition as well as the post-processing quality, I am all ears.

You didn’t say I had to have shot the picture although I wish I had a shot as lovely as the ‘Macaw’.
But what I have on my background is of monumental import to me – this inaugural weekend it means everything about hope, the future and possibilities. I received it in an email and made my background as a constant reminder of the accomplishment signified and continuing.

I don’t have any images on my background, as there’s little point, due to the fact that when I’m using my computer, there’s normally a window maximised, thus hiding the background.
That said….I use the Google Photos Screensaver on a few computers, pulling images from my photo gallery. That gives me a range of photos to enjoy when I’m not using my computers (ie, I have a computer in the living room, so I get to see the screensaver on that one).

Hi!
My current desktop background is a photo I rediscovered in my photo folders… just today actually! It’s one of my cats who was hospitalized last night (he’s ok) but I wanted a prominent photo of him right now :-)

I tend to switch my background every time I take & process a new shot that I really like. Also, I look for one that gives me a sense of the current season. Right now my background is a backlit maple leaf in the snow…http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarahhallphotography/3196902564/ and it’s fitting because it’s been sunny all week and we have quite the winter wonderland here in Wisconsin.

Right now I have one of my favorites as a background on my PC. It’s a shot of a piece of sculpture from below. The photo is mostly monochromatic since there is no implied color within it. And it is intriguing because it is balanced by negative and positive space.
You can see the shot HERE.

Cool midair flight photo!
Mine’s from the first dance from the last wedding I photographed, first wedding of 2009.

Though my laptop screen has open windows it travels to weddings events, consultations, and a favorite wedding photo wallpaper always makes for conversation when presenting our work.

Right now it’s this., simply because I think Mr. “Wounded Negro” is one of the most awesome looking people ever.
But for a really really long time it was a picture I took my self of the National Rainbow Gathering because I’m terribly homesick and when I look at it I get this huge flood of emotions. And all I want to do is just dive right into it.

On my mac I have the desktop set to change every 30 minutes with a series of 40-50 photos that I update about 3-4 times per year. These range all over the place and having a random rotation is fun to remember photos I haven’t seen in a while.
I’ve found anything faster than 15-30 minutes gets distracting.
January 18th, 2009 at 10:45 am
You got me thinking with this post. I always had a problem with desktop wallpapers. Unlike Martin says, even if I have windows maximized, when I switch to the desktop, I WANT to see something that inspires me. And what I was always looking for on a wallpaper was a good color combination. As strange it may seem, I want good color combination on my desktop. I don’t really know why, but it always been like this. Right now it’s a cropped version of this.

I tend to put my most recent photography or graphics project as my background. This lets me assess my work over time, and see if I still like certain techniques after looking at them for a while.
Currently, this is my desktop.

This is a photo of my 8 year old kid snorkeling in Trunk Bay, Virgin Islands. I wrote “hi” in the sand with my toes, then snapped a pic with her in the background. Where I live it is snowy and cold, so I like to look at how much fun we had in the SUN and warm.

I like desktop pictures that are calm and not too distracting. Currently, my desktop picture is a photo of a lake in Sweden.
Also, although it may sound funny, I like to use photos that aren’t that special to me. Seeing the photo over and over again every time I use my computer spoils it a bit, and every time I see that photo afterwards, I think “that’s my desktop picture”, not “that’s a lovely photo”. However, that’s just me… :)

I changed my desktop image a few days ago to this recent shot of mine:
http://www.zooomr.com/photos/scherbi/6699723/
As for why, well, it was time for a change, and I guess the comment that it was “Very Ansel-esq” told me I should spend some more time looking at it.

This, http://flickr.com/photos/hlkljgk/2916069414/ , is on my laptop currently.
It was taken when I was walking around a lake in Western Mass because my father, husband and daughter were in a boat which didn’t fit me.
This, http://flickr.com/photos/hlkljgk/2989872174 , is on my desktop. It’s my daughter, Syna. Why wouldn’t everyone want this face greeting you before work!? :)
Great capture of the macaw.

the macaw is in such sharp focus, that can’t have been an easy shot to get!!
my current desktop is this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14775462@N04/3048294631/). I took the photo in 2005 but rediscovered it while going through my old shots. Its been there for a couple of months so its time for a change.
Generally speaking my desktop images are smaller than the area of the screen so that I can have my icons around the outside.

I was doing a photo exercise where I put a bunch of Christmas ornaments on a big sheet of construction paper, and then took pictures of them from different angles, distances, etc. This one caught my eye because the glitter from some of the other ornaments brushed off and onto the paper, giving it a sparkling effect.
Christmas is now over for the year, and I should probably change my background, but I really like this one.

This is my current background image, its one of my favorite photos from a recent trip to Vietnam.
Its there because its an insane scene of a bride and groom making their way through a sandstorm on these huge bright sand dunes in Mui Ne, Vietnam, as a storm rolls in from the ocean, although it looks like it could be in the desert!
I guess it was just an odd thing to see so i love it.

I change my desktop backgrounds from time to time but I’ve had this one lately. I took this while in China the second time (Dec. 2003), to adopt our second daughter. This was the day before we got her. We were able to go to the Ming Tombs while in Beijing.

In general I use only pictures taken by myself.

I change my desktop fairly regularly – whenever I take a good, uncluttered image that’ll not obscure the billions of icons! Last year I used some of my faves from my 365 challenge. This is the background I currently have on my laptop:

Those two questions have a different importance for me.
what’s on your background ?
a picture of combination of shot’s I took
why is it there
at home it is there just to have something else than the windows background
at work, it’s a kind of escape, I get the desktop visible, I see a picture taken by me,
where I’m proud of and what gives me an escape from work (especially from the stress)
and why is the reason for work not the one for work, that is something you see in the frequency
I changes backgrounds at work.

What a thought provoking question. The picture I have on my desktop is there for several reasons:
1. It was taken on the first day I had my new Nikon D40
2. It represents an area of LA I love, the beach.
3. It’s a souring bird flying to new heights, which is significant in my personal life as well.
4. It was the start of a new blog highlighting travelin’ local.
I know have this picture on my laptop as a reminder of where I am now and where I want to go.

Thanks for providing me an opportunity to share my picture and the reason it’s important to me.

I’ve never been to Peru, so seeing your picture is great. As you can see from my picture, I also like the image of a bird flying. I have this on my desktop as well as on my about page on my website. The reasons are several:
1. It was one of the first pictures I took with my new Nikon D40.
2. The high flying bird represents part of me who is also flying high.
3. Soaring to new heights is one of my intended goals, just as with the bird.
4. The picture was taken at one of my favorite spots, the Santa Monica beach.
Just a few reasons, I love this picture. Thanks for providing me a place to highlight these. Oh, and the picture is here.

Although I’ve been taking pictures with a point and shoot for years, I just purchased and have been shooting with a Nikon D80. I think in the last 2 months that I’ve owned it, I’ve taken over 1300 photo’s. My background changes, like one of the readers said, whenever I go out and do a shoot. Right now I have miniature sea horses from a recent shoot at the local Aquarium.

Congratulations for the great shot you made. The attitude of the bird is so dynamic!
On my main home computer, I have two LCD displays and I use DisplayFusion to spread one photo over the two disaplys.
I usually try to use one of my own pictures on all my computers (it kinda makes a cheap advertisment for my work and some pleasure for me), in the case of the main home computer, it’s also a dynamic flying bird. More prcecisely, it’s Landing down, a photo of a lappet-faced vulture arriving at the head of tree (shot in Kenya, Masai Mara). I like it because it spans quite well between both screens, and it has a lot of blue smooth surface which is nice for desktop icons.
Previously, I used a nice shot of a Paris subway entering station (exceptionally sun-lit, in a aerial station). The framing was great even if it was a little messy for everyday use.
Furthermore, I have a laptop computer at work which is backgrounded with another image I brought from Brazil. But this time, the intent is really to give me a relaxing view when, during a tough meeting, I need to switch my mind of for a few seconds (for my sanity’s sake). [Furthermore, I also use a selection of the images I prefer as a set for display in the screensaver, exactly for the same purpose.]
If I go on giving more details, I also have a computer used for video display on a projector. It’s only a 800*600 pixel display and I use a rotating view from A dreamy world, whose free wallpapers are quite inspiring and definitely unique. The only problem is that -sometimes- the desktop icons are a lost in the middle of the messy details of the background image. In my opinion, this simple issue makes it difficult to choose between pictures that should go to the background of a computer desktop. This leads me to 2 different strategies in terms of background selection:
single color background, like for the lappet-faced vulture: Blue sky is OK to receive a few icons
background smoothed-down by being out of focus, like these cheetah pictures from YLoveBigCats. If some details are present, single color and out-of-focus blur help in letting icons stand out.
All in all, having several computers operating nearly simultaneously and liking the opportunity to change desktop backgrounds, I like to apply those rules.
January 18th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
At home I use this background:
http://flickr.com/photos/mpancha/2869408827/in/set-72157607169721014/
This is sunset at a cottage I rented a couple summers ago. I believe in visualizing your goals, and this is one of them – to have my own summer cottage so I can telecommute from there in the summer. Plus, on those cold winter days in Toronto, it helps having a warmer looking image at your fingertips when the white blanket of snow hides the greenery for weeks at a time.
At work, I use this background:
http://flickr.com/photos/mpancha/2869409225/in/set-72157607169721014/
I find water images calm me. This was also taken at the cottage a couple summers ago and was at sunset. Can’t wait to go cottaging again this summer, hopefully I’ll get to take a few shots of the Atlantic at sunset if things go as planned.
The cottage in the images above is about a half hour northwest of Huntsville, Ontario, Canada. In a place where cell phones dont work, and you’re only link to the outside world is a land line phone, and if you want to pamper yourself, satellite tv.

Actually it’s quite funny that you started this post, because I started making desktop backgrounds this week on request for a friend. We have been traveling around the world for 1.5 years and took a little pictures. Until now we didn’t really do anything with them yet, but this was a first start.
I like this picture, because on my MacBook it looks “classy”. ;-) And it doesn’t disturb usability as most icons are at the bottom of the screen.

Mine is an Illinois sunset. Catching these can be tough on the spur of the moment. I was driving north on an interstate and stopped off the highway on the top of an exit to shoot this out the window of my car. I shoot a lot of agricultural stuff and having the farm in the foreground just made it one of my favorites.

I aim for nice & simple with my backgrounds, so they won’t be distracting or “hide” desktop icons.
My home laptop’s background is an old shot I took with a P&S camera years ago at the Tumacácori National Historical Park in Arizona — basically just a patch of wall at an old mission.
On my work laptop, I use a more-recent (DSLR) shot of waves at a local lake.

My screensaver is a photo – not “great art,” or even a technically wonderful photo…but, my wonderful Australian Shepherd, Caleb, was diagnosed with Lymes Disease back in September, and he was *really* down for the count for a few months. Could barely move, was sad and unhappy and miserable. It was breaking my heart, as he is a very active and courageous dog. Not to mention, my constant companion – and now he couldn’t even follow me from one room to the next.
After a few months, he started to pick up a bit…a little more each week, but he was never quite back to full capacity…until this one magical morning, when we went out photo hunting at sunrise…and he LEAPED out of the car at the field, and did JOYOUS laps around me – he was back. So this is him – and my pathetic attempt at panning, ha, but I kind of like all the crazy blur cuz it implies MUCH MOTION, which after so long, was GREAT to associate with him…

My background is a picture I took of a black sand beach in Maui. It got picked up by a travel blog and it’s by far my most viewed picture on Flickr. I use it because I love the contrast between the vivid green and the black sand and the water looks particularly dark and dreary because of the black sand.

This is mine right now. I tend to change it just about every other day when I get new ones. This is taken on the island of Aruba where I live. These days there are some beautiful sunset that I enjoy each day.

I have a shot I took last year on our boat heading back to the yacht club, with the skyline of Toronto at sunset. For me it’s nice and peaceful, and having bits of the boat visible let’s me know that there’s eventually an end to this miserable winter, and sailing season is just around the corner.

I use a photo that my then 7-year-old son took while on vacation of the <a href=”http://www.flickr.com/photos/tippiedog/156899138/”sky and seagull. He was using a disposable 35-mm camera. I like this photo for several reasons: 1.) it reminds me of happy times with my family, 2.) it’s not very distracting (which is important since this is my work computer), and 3.) I think it’s just a great photo; it reminds me that photography isn’t always about the technical details.

I change my wallpaper often, usually when I take a pic I really like, it’s usually something current! This one I took of the Bayonne Bridge during the first snow of the season. It was a drive by, the snow had just changed to snow/rain & I got tired of cleaning the lens.
I really enjoyed seeing all of your fantastic photos! What a GREAT thread!

My background (http://www.flickr.com/photos/livewell360/3207014332/) reminds of a great round of golf that I played with a friend visiting from Germany. The picture is of the cart path, (which is pretty unique) leading to the fairway on the 1st hole at Devil’s Ridge in Oxford MI. This picture was taken in early fall of 2008, when the leafs were just starting to change color.

I did not include a link to mine because it is a family portrait. It may seem cheesy and boring to some, however it is the first “proffesional” picture I have taken of us. Just a little background, I like to take a family picture for our christmas cards every year. Last year I was not able to have all of our family members together ( teenagers, harumph). Anyhoo, I have since taken on a part time job with a photgraphy company who was kind enough to let me borrow a full set-up ( lights, camera, backdrop, etc.). When I sent them out to be developed, I was made to sign a release because they were proffesional pictures. I was quite proud of myself.

I shot this photo at the world famous Bonzia Pipeline this last november when the waves were hit up to 23 feet. I was shooting some many pictures of the surfer in the foreground until I got the right moment on the last shot. Make sure you look close at what the surfer is looking at. The edge of Carlo Blow at Rainbow Beach (QLD Australia). Just got back from a 2 night trip there on the weekend and the giant sand dunes…they were just amazing! Apparently its been there since Captain Cook landed his ship there and first discovered Australia (or the first Europeans at least). I’m still in awe of nature and the fact that they’ve lasted that long, almost unchanged. The place was nothing short of amazing for me. I hope to go back there again soon, but until then…I’ll just stare out at it from my computer screen.

This shot was taken in the backyard of the house where we spent our vacation in India. The pack of monkeys moved through our area one morning and I was out shooting flowers/plants. When I finally realised what was going on I started following them slowly until they sat down and started eating.
Reasons for why it’s my background:
1. It was thrilling to see them sitting and eating while I was watching from 10-15 meters away.
2. It reminds me that I should never leave the house without carrying all my gear with me. The 50mm lens just wasnt enough to get up close and personal in the images.
3. The greenerie makes me calm.

We’ve been using webshots for years. Every 3 or 4 months I go through my favourite photos from the past 3-4 months and upload them. Usually of the kids or seasonal sorts of photos. They cycle through regularly and the kids get excited when they realize they’re up. I like keeping it fresh that way.

Unedited version of a fantastic, pure luck, being in the right place at the right time, capture. I had noticed this hawk on the side of the roads in days previous, but never had my camera (I know it’s a Cardinal Sin). This day I actually turned around on the highway, an extra 3 miles out of my way, and basically walked up to this creature. I was 6 feet from it and it took flight. The wind blew and the bird just stayed that motionless, not flapping it’s wings or anything. I snapped, snapped & snapped. Most of them are in my flickr page.

I have a close-up of a clothespin with spiked frost and a dormant grape vine entwining it. I shot 100+ pix that morning because the frost was amazingly detailed and spiked. It being the new year..I started looking around at my photos to find something to replace the family Christmas shot. That is how “Cutter” our 7 year old palomino got on the screen. I had been out doing some black/white shots on a fall day and Mr. Curious came over to the fence to investigate all.
Even though the photograph was not that good, I got a surprise when I put it on my desktop..he actually appeared to be looking into the house and greeting us..so it makes me laugh every time I go by.

My screen saver is a shot of my favorite place. It is Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is beautiful 365 days of the year. Every time you go it looks different and you never know what kind of animal you might see.

I have the simple blue background standard with Windows XP Media Center Edition. The screen popped up when I switched to Foxfire. I like it because the blue geometric design is soothing and non-intrusive.

Webshots lets you post yours or selection of others to computer and then changes as you set it up-re: seconds-fades in-out etc. therefore, I don’t have just ONE photo, but several entire albums!
It would be impossible for me to pick one of my seven cats or the various children or friends or nature shots to share. I just wanted to share the Webshots Link: http://www.webshots.com

It doesn’t snow here much, so I try to snap a photo before the sun comes out and melts a beautiful scene. I also use a background image changer program, set to change every 15 minutes. Most of the photos are shots I have taken using my Nikon D40 on auto set.

I’m fortunate enough to work on two monitors at work. So, here are my two background images:
Left Side and the
Right Side.
They’re both there because my kids are two of my biggest sources of inspiration — ever — in my whole entire life.

I picked this tufted titmouse up off the floor of my porch after he flew into a window . I held him about 15 minutes until he regained his composure .
He gave me a few photo opps before he flew away,he later returned to my feeders for a few minutes.
It was a great experience to have a live wild bird in the palm of your hand.

Here’s my desktop background. Like most I change it quite often. This particular picture is a bldg in Pasadena. I love old bldgs just imagining what the walls would say if they could talk. My son is also in the corner and I can never have a background with out at least one of my kids in it! Talk about inspiration to get to work!

My laptop wallpaper is a photo of Lionel, the African lion, at the Los Angeles Zoo. Each year the zoo and a local camera shop sponsor a Photo Day. The zoo arranges for keeper talks and animal enrichment , and several camera and accessory vendors have equipment photographers may borrow.

I tend to put a new background on after every trip to the mountains. Right now it’s a winter shot of a narrow forest road crossing a stream deep in the woods above Red River, NM

My wall paper is a major crop of 3 Bald Eagles perched on Alder Tree branches in the pouring rain. The photo is not great but considering I had to get out of the rain under the back flap of my truck canopy to keep my camera dry and considering the telephoto lens I had at the time was not the greatest and hand held, the photo turned out not too badly if I do say so my self. There was so much rain coming down you can see drops of water coming off all of the branches. This is a crop from a photo of 25 or so Bald Eagles in the same grove of Alders.

my background right now is a picture i got at our high school. the wrestling team decided to drop all lights except one large on that hung just over the wrestling mat. at a break our coach, who is really intense during the match, lovingly took his wrestler aside and just talked to him to calm the kids’ nerves. because i was able to capture it in b&w i really looks good to me.

The background on my laptop is my mum’s passport photo from when she was 28. She came to Australia from India in 1974. My mum passed away 11 weeks ago after having a massive stroke. Her illness and death was very unexpected. I found her passport a few days after her death and was so amazed to find how alike we look! I look at it everyday and smile at what an amazingly wonderful person she was, and how much I admire her! When I show people that photo, they actually think it’s a photo of me, it it so similar! I had never seen this photo until after she died, I felt (and still do) like I was looking into a mirror!

My backdrop has a pic of a pink lily (I think) from the Botanic Gardens. I just got my 70-300mm lens and I was playing with the aperture (I am still learning….) but I loved the colors on this and the depth of field which I am trying to play with more. It is there to remind me to make more time to get out and take more pics!

The Leaf picture was taken in an Apple Orchard in the Okanagan, BC and believe it or not, I took it hoping it would turn out as a background. The other pics are taken in the Rocky Mountains at a place named Lake Louise and the original was taken in February with the lake frozen and us able to walk out to the middle! I liked the effect and flipped it so most of my icons would be in the darker areas. And then just for fun used it as a BW image for a while. Many people acutally notice the leaves as I do many presenations in my real job and lots actually notice it!!!

This is the picture on my desktop: . I get a real sense of contentment every time that I look at it. I like how on my desktop it looks as though it might be a really big flower, even though in reality the Mexican sunflower is pretty small. I originally took this shot as a reference photo to paint (I do watercolours). I rotate my desktop pix periodically, especially when I find something that I won’t get tired of looking at.

Took it while on a hike up Old Rag Mountain in Virginia, US. I was going to delete but started playing with it in PP. it’s just a little reminder to give things a second chance, they may surprise you with something good :)

18% gray solid color on my photo machines and whatever I happen to like at the moment on my email-etc machine. Right now, it is the default OSX wallpaper, but that may change.

My background is a picture of my view outside my bedroom window. It was around Thanksgiving, one morning, and there was a haze and a natural vignette. I didn’t retouch the picture. It reminds me of beautiful autumn mornings when everything is quiet and no one is up and about yet. Whenever I travel it reminds me of home.
