What Lens is Attached to your DSLR Right Now?
I asked this on our Facebook community a couple of weeks ago and the variety of answers was fascinating – so I thought I’d ask it again here on the blog.
For DSLR owners – what lens is attached to your camera right now?
Let us know the brand, focal length range and aperture etc so we can get a snap picture of what gear is most regularly in use across our community.
PS: on my camera it’s a Canon 24-70mm f2/8 lens. These days it rarely leaves my camera unless I’m out shooting something special.

Right now it’s my Nikon 55-200, but tomorrow it will be my new 50mm 1.8. Better yet the 55-200 will remain on my current D40, and the 50mm will be on my new D7000 body, being delivered by visiting family landing in Israel at 7am tomorrow morning. To say I can’t wait would be a serious understatement

Currently, on my D7000, I have a Nikkor 35mm/1.8.
On my D3000, I have the Nikkor 18-55mm VR.
I mostly use the Nikkor 18-200mm VRII on either camera.
The D7000 is new and will be my primary camera with mainly the 18-200mm, as it is perfect for the venue I shoot the most. The D3000 is now a back up.
The lenses mounted now are there because I shot a club fund-raising event where I needed a fast lens on the D7000 and I gave the D3000 to a young volunteer to use during the cocktail hour to get some extra candids.

Shooting today with the Lensbaby “Composer” with the f4(my usual and favorite) disc installed. I was also carrying my Kenko extension tubes in case I wanted to get really close with it. D90 w/ 50 1.8D is the default winter living room stowage for quick shots with the 1.5yr old.
Last used… 70-200 2.8 VRII for a trip to the National Aviary this past weekend.
Summer is just around the corner with longer daylight, which means the 14-24 2.8G or the 70-200 2.8 VRII will alternate as the last used/stowed lens as I bounce back and forth from wide to tele.

Right at this second, my 50mm f1.4 lens is on the front end of the Nikon D300. But it is because I am working this week on shooting at 1.4 in bad light. It is a project for practice- Make it harder so the real shoots(weddings) are easier. Most of the time it is a 24-70 2.8, which I guess is the most common lens choice.

CANON – Nikon . Nikon and Canon.
Most of you guys are missing out and on what is truly that skill of photography and its got nothing to do about the physical size of your lens or anything else for that matter (would you purchase a red Ferrari hahaha why???)
It’s very sad that a lot of sites like this seem to dedicate to two brands only, again one should ask why is it so????? Could it be because a lot of Pros get their cameras for no or at low cost by the manufacturers to perhaps convince the punters that those two brands are THE ones too buy or am I being to cynical?.
I shoot a lot of, what shall I say, zoom situations in very bad weather conditions and I can’t go past the superlative sensor cleaning and industry innovations that Olympus produce. I have currently on my
Olympus E 3 a 14 -50 f2.8 (28 – 100) and use a larger zoom often 40 – 150 (80 – 300) just as often.
I live and shoot in Australia where dust is a major problem but with the sensor cleaning abilities of the Olympus I DO NOT have dust issues. And I’m carrying half the weight although do not (snigger snigger) looks as big in the field as the N and C shooters who are struggling after a half day at a National Championship Rally.
I think a lot of camera user sites should cut the bull snobbishness and widen their vision.
Keep Shooting.

Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-f/5.6, it is a safe default unless I want to go for some more specific reason to telephoto (Nikkor 70-300) or to the prime 50mm f/1.8 if I want some really shallow depth of field. But most of the time is just the 18-105.

Right now, an EF 85mm f/1.2L II is on my 5DII as I was taking some low ambient light portraits last night. Usually, I store the 5DII with an EF 24-105mm f/4L IS attached so I’m ‘ready for whatever’.

What on earth are you talking about? DPS isn’t just for Canon or Nikon shooters. It’s not even just for DSLR shooters. It’s a photography blog & a nice one I might add. The question was asked to see what people are shooting with. It didn’t ask your favorite Nikon or Canon lens. You shoot Olympus & you’re happy. That’s great. You represented for your brand. Keith shoots Sony & he seems happy. Ceri Vale shoots Olympus as well & didn’t say so with ranting & raving.
Honestly, in my opinion, you seem to be trying to make yourself feel better about buying your Olympus by downing everything else. Here’s an idea. Since you said a lot of these sites are dedicated to Canon or Nikon, why don’t you start a blog for Olympus users that shoot dust? haha I’m just having fun with you. Oh, I wouldn’t buy a red Ferrari. I would buy a black & yellow Lamborghini.
By the way, where can we see some of those Olympus photos of yours at?

50mm prime 1.4 on the T2i, my workhorse. The two 7D’s have a fisheye and a wide angle zoom from the last gig and the 1DS sits unused in the equipment closet with some generic lens, I believe it has a 80mm prime because it was last used for wedding portraits a year ago. Loving that I don’t do weddings anymore, events are far more fun.
I’m switching away from the expensive “pro cameras” to the new consumer ones. the T2i I bought last year takes better photos than the 1DS I bough 4 years ago. and I dont worry about them at all.
I find the 50mm 1.4 prime works great most of the time. It’s the lens that reminds me why I love photography.

I have a Canon 7D, so for me it’s the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS which has L-quality glass, but can’t be L because it’s EF-S. Basically it’s the equivalent of the 24-70L (on full frame) except it also has IS, which the 24-70 sorely lacks.

I’ve removed dust from my Canon 17-55 f2.8 lens, with thanks to John, http://www.8by10.co.uk, Christchurch FC club photographer:
For the Canon 17-85 IS. The front nameplate (goes around the outside edge of the front element) is a thin piece of metal plate which is glued in place with a permanently tacky glue. Carefully lifting this
will reveal three small screws holding a rotatable plastic ring. Mark the position of the screws relative to the plastic ring they are holding in place. Undo the screws and the ring and the front element will drop out. Clean and re-assemble. Ensure the screws are in the same position relative to the plastic ring. Put the metal plate back in place and press firmly to secure.
Takes about 10 minutes.
The following sites shows the procedure with a series of photo’s:
http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/drp & http://www.pbase.com/rcicala/1755_is_surgery
The following site is well worth a look too: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/694090
If you should ever need to to try the above I have some further
advice. Set the lens at a ‘datum’ setting that you can get back to
before doing anything. Match mark everything to be removed against its
partner before removing to ensure that everything can be put back
together in the same relative positions. I’ve found a fine point
silver ink marker invaluable for this type of marking. Should the lens
be accidentally disturbed during this process return it to the ‘datum’
setting.

Not to be buzz kill, but “MAGIC” stated earlier that he only had dust caps on his camera. He is correct, lenses do not belong on a camera that is not being used! While it is easy to become lazy and leave lenses attached to your rig when not in use, just one good drop or hard bump against a longer lense will throw the columnation out on the camera and your pictures will no longer hit the sensor properly. It is not a cheap fix to have corrected. I have learned this lesson the hard way. SO enloy those lenses when you are shooting but remember that when you put your camera back in the bag, remove the lense and put the body cap on.

I’m rather boring and still got the Canon 18-55mm EFS that came with my Canon Rebel T1i (I have to call it that because I bought it in the States, but ’500D’ sounds far better if you ask me!). It IS a pretty good all-rounder and I’m on a budget…

Since getting my 35mm F/1.8; it has been the lens of choice on my D5000 since december, I recently purchased the 50mm f/1.4 g too and now that has been taken it’s place. Although i also own a kit lens (18-55) and 55-200mm these are the 2 lenses that i carry when i have my camera on me.
I like how they’re good in low light and the DOF results i can get. The 35mm is definitely better indoors if space is cramped, but if it’s head shots i want i’ll use my 50mm.

Just reading back some comments reminds me that before I went digital I mainly used Leica M3 with a non-zooming 135 lens pretty well all the time. Never really felt any need to change it all that often although I had the 35 and 50 lenses. ‘Zooming’ was done at the print stage. I think I paid greater attention to framing back then and it was also the high quality lens and medium sped film that paid off.
