Think Tank Photo Retrospective 5
Just launched by ThinkTank Photo, A professional camera bag manufacturer in the United States, the Retrospective 5 is aimed more towards the 4/3rds photographer, or someone with a rangefinder or dSLR camera…. and guess what, we’re giving one away! [details right at the end]
“The Retrospective series is comprised of four shoulder bags and two lens changer bags. Created for the professional photographer that wants to blend in with the crowd and remain inconspicuous in any situation. Our product designers have blended the look and feel of “old-school” camera bags and infused it with “new-school” features and technology for the digital imaging age.” – thinktankphoto
I’ve had the Retrospective 5 now for two weeks, it has become my “I’m popping out, back soon” bag. My usual ‘goto’ bag is a Retrospective 20 for when I was just popping out and about with one camera and a couple of different lenses [Canon 5DMKII / Grip / 24-70 / 70-200] however, there’s been many times recently, since my addition of the new smaller Sony camera gear, when I’ve just want to grab my keys and wallet, and my more compact cameras and just go… No mess, no fuss! The Retrospective 5 is much smaller (24 x 19.5 x 11.5 cm) by comparison with the Retro 20 (30.5 x 29.8 x 15.2 cm) and comes in Pinestone [the green above] or black, and it looks proper old school!
The perfect match for your 4/3rds gear [Tim, this one's for you, I'm certain!] the new BabyRetro has all the same features as the bigger brothers and sisters in the Retrospective range, with silent velcro, many pockets, many dividers (all moveable) and a packet of extra dividers for if you’re ‘divider crazy!’ and it also comes with the standard waterproof cover that slips over the bag when it decides to rain down on you (no Phil Collins Ref intended, honest)
Here’s a photo of me and my little boy (Yes, he’s running off into that field to chase the magpies!) me with the Retro5 on, to give you some perspective, I’m 6’3″
My conclusion is that this is another really well made camera bag from Think Tank Photo that I will use daily. It comes with a ‘No Rhetoric” warranty (basically means that if it breaks while you own it, they’ll fix or replace it in no time) You can download their whole product range here in pdf form if you want to check out all of the products that they offer.
No, here’s the official press release.
Think Tank Photo to Release New Bag for DSLR, Micro Four Thirds and Rangefinder Cameras
Santa Rosa, Calif. – Think Tank Photo announces that in May it will release the Retrospective® 5, a soft-sided shoulder bag designed for DSLR, Micro Four Thirds, and rangefinder camera equipment. Like the other bags in Think Tank’s Retrospective series, the Retrospective 5 was created as an homage to classic photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank.
Designed for the professional photographer who wants to remain inconspicuous in any situation, its “old-school” look mixes with “new-school” features giving tribute to the days when bags were visually simple but highly functional. It is available in two colors, black and Pinestone.
The Micro Four Thirds system (MFT) is a standard created by Olympus and Panasonic for mirrorless interchangeable lens digital cameras and camcorders. In one sample configuration, the Retrospective 5 can hold an Olympus PEN E-P2 camera body, a 17mm lens attached with the VF-1 optical viewfinder, a 14-42 mm lens, 40-150 mm lens, a FL-14 Flash, a SEMA-1 External microphone adapter set, a charger, cable and extra battery, and the VF-2 Electronic viewfinder.
Key features include:
• Perfectly sized for DSLR, Micro Four Thirds, and rangefinder camera systems
• Shoulder strap includes cushioned non-slip pad for long-term comfort
• Sound Silencers eliminate hook-and-loop noise when opening bag
• Zippered pockets and organizational pockets for accessories
• Removable divider set for layout customization included
• Convenient carrying handle for quick transport
• Seam-sealed rain cover included
• Business card window under the front flap for identification
• Expandable front pocket fits a pro size DSLR body or accessories
• High quality YKK zippers
• Soft, flexible and lightweight

I’d still rather have the 20/30. I’m sure it’s fine and dandy but if you’re a big guy (like moi) then it just ends up looking like a handbag. :p
It’s not like just because your bag is big you _have_ to fill it with stuff.

I already own a Think Tank Retrospective 30 that I can carry a camera body, three lens, flash, battery charging equipment, filters, manuals, and assorted cleaning supplies. This bag has been wonderful for those long term photographic journeys where I would need lots of equipment. And now I am looking for a smaller camera bag for those short trips or walk around town in crowds photo shouting trips where I need a smaller bag. A bag that is small but I could carry a camera body, a main zoom lens and my fast 50mm prime lens. The Think Tank Retrospective 5 looks to be that bag. After all, you cannot have enough camera bags.

April 16th, 2011 at 3:26 am
I understand that everyone is just dying for an opportunity to get a bag for free, but here is my honest opinion. First, the bag is small. It may be ok for Leica, but if you carry a Canon or Nikon DSLR or alike, it barely fits one body with lens and maybe, just maybe one small extra lens. It may not fit a body with a telephoto lens attached.
Second, I prefer sling bags and messenger bags over backpacks any day, so I did my homework and can recommend a few bags that cost less and offer more. For instance, Tenba messenger – it fits two bodies with lenses attached, an iPad or small MacBook and still has space for random extras such as your sweater. It is padded in the back to protect your thigh. And my favorite feature is, there is a zipper on top of the flap, so that you can take the camera out quickly and conveniently without lifting the flap.
Good luck with winning, anyway.

What a great looking bag! I have the urban disguise 6 and have traveled all over Africa with it for work (which is not photography) loaded with laptop, ipad, ipod, Nikon d300 and a couple of lens and filters. If your retro holds up anywhere near as well as the urban disguise, this new bag will last forever.

I’ve been referring EVERYONE to dPS – once I started photography, have a bunch who followed suit and first place I referred them to was here
Now for the bag WOW!! I’ve been carrying the great KATA PR-440 everywhere I go but it’s SO BIG and heavy for someone like me that’s like 105 lbs lol THEN I saw this ThinkTankPhoto’s Retro5 and it’s PERFECT!!! Great style and holds everything I need to get around – I do a lot of charity work with free photography and haven’t seen a smaller bag I like that doesn’t jump out and say “I HAVE AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA!!” Awesome Awesome Awesome design! Whoever wins it is one LUCKY person!!!

I am always on the lookout for the perfect camera bag. I must have 6 of them by now. Some are too big and some are too small and work for different occasions but this one seems to be about the correct size and could replace several of my current bags.

April 23rd, 2011 at 8:16 pm
Thats what I love about DPS; They keep showing me what I need whether it’s tutorial, editorials or as in this case a product review. For the past few months I have been looking for a ” just popping out, back soon” or ‘strolling around the city and might take a photo or two’ bag. The think Tank Photo Retrospective look like EXACTLY what I have been looking for.

April 25th, 2011 at 6:30 am
Posted this on my Facebook.
As I’m new to all this photography stuff, I look at anything and everything. I thought this looks a much better idea than my clumsy backpack thing – wouldn’t mind one of these – and then found there was an opportunity to win one of these bags. I don’t know if my little contribution here constitutes an entry but I’ll give anything a go once – and I wouldn’t mind winning the bag!

See, I real thick. I don’t understand. “awaiting moderation” ? Ah well. That’s probably why I don’t win things. Have become a bit of a technophobe in my old age. Sorry folks.

Thanks for this review. I have been struggling with ideas for just the right sized bag for quick runs with my 7D and the Retrospective series seems well suited to the cause. I’m also now a bit more curious about the 4/3rds equipment base. Attached an image of my current situation

So – I’m late, I’m sorry… I have just literally arrived from one side of Australia, on the other… almost!
I took all the entries with the requirements met, made a number list, and drew out a winner… the winner is;
Kelli Taylor, who it seems will not have to go get the Retro5 herself as Random.org chose you as the winner! Congrats…

Thank you all for playing along. Let’s hope we have more stuff to give away soon.

It fits your 5dmk2 gripped with a lens right? Because I have a gripped D700 with a 24-70mm and I’m hoping that will fit without any weird bulges.

A practical and durable (it appears) bag that doesn’t look like a geek camera bag. Me likes.
