Lightroom 3 Beta 2 in Action with Photographer Tyler Stableford
Here’s a quick video of Adventure Photographer Tyler Stableford and how he’s using Lightroom 3 beta 2 in his photography of an ice climbing expedition. Hopefully it gives those of you looking at Lightroom 3 a bit of an insight into what it has in store for you.

this is a product everyone should own in my opinion. From the ease of organization, the simple fixes to finally publishing the photo to the site of your choosing it is wonderful. I use it for organizing my client images, tagging, and then prepping for final photoshop retouching. My wife uses the built-in features like exposure and red-eye removal, as she is not as picky with the family snap shots as I am. There are a few things in the product that pester me, but I have tried a lot of systems and this is the one that hits closest to home. The best thing is that it is free to try, so give it a whirl and see what you think.

Is it just me or did he not show anything new? He mentioned the new processing engine, but I’m pretty sure all the features he highlighted were already in Lightroom 2.

Sweet, not only is it cool to see a pro photographer working simple magic in Lightroom, it’s also neat to see one at work in the field. Love the one handed camera work with additional camera hanging from the belt!

I’m really excited to try out Lr 3, I just don’t feel like installing another program on my PC and then have to erase it when the beta is over.

If I’m not mistaken, all those features mentioned in the video are present in Lightroom 2.

foo,
Well, he did talk about the new import, new processing engine, and the improved post crop vignette tool.

As an increasingly disgruntled Aperture (2 and now 3) user it was really good to see Lightroom 3 in action to get a comparison. I like that draw a line to apply a graduated neutral density feature!
To me, often that photographer was holding his camera/lens like an amateur, i.e. holding the lens like binoculars with the fingers going over the top of the lens instead of having your palm on the bottom.
I have not shot while dangling from an icy rock wall, so maybe that is just a necessary way to shoot in such conditions. Still, it caught my eye.

Does anyone know when Lightroom 3, the actual version, will be released? Or, when it’s scheduled to be released?

What a crap! Nothing new.

@Steph — I think the current beta expires at the end of June (Don’t quote me on that as I may very well be wrong) so they’ll either have to release another beta or go final.
I’m digging LightRoom Beta 3. Even though we aren’t supposed to I’ve all but stopped using LightRoom 2.x. I really love the upload to flickr feature — it rocks!

Well, it’s an awesome video and it’s interesting to see someone else using Adobe Lightroom.
But from what I saw, there’s nothing new. It’s not a big LR3 sales pitch!

Thanks for the info. I am a developing amateur and do not have LR2, but have been awaiting the release of LR3. Adobe, via e-mail, tells you nothing about the release date of LR3, and i do not wish to spend my dollars to purchase LR2 now and then get hit with an up grade fee to incorporate the LR3. Many of you have commented that there is really no difference in this LR3 and LR2, how can that be? Adobe surely would not have a market for LR3 if there were not significant improvements, or am I too naive to realize a marketing pitch.
Comments???

With every new release of Aperture I give the program an honest go-round. But I have *always* come back to Lightroom. I’ve been using LR 3 Beta 2 since it came out – it is absolutely awesome.

Couple of things….
Tyler is a PRO, I don’t care how he holds his camera, his shots are amazing (check out his work)!
And as far as using the beta, when the final comes out, can the beta library be upgraded to the final library?? I am hesitant to use the beta (but want to very badly) for everything, but not if I cannot get all of the post-processing into the final from the beta?????

I’d agree, the video was a bit of a sales pitch instead of a how-to or a “here’s what’s new”. It was more shooting on the ice than details of how he uses it.
I use nothing but Lightroom 3 Beta 2 and love the differences even between the first and second Betas.
I started out with PS CS3 and using the ACR.
Obviously Photoshop can offer more in the way of layers and other editing uses, but with the updated watermarking (still not to the consumer configurable I would like to see), printing and web modules, I haven’t had to turn back to PS lately for going from camera to web or Flickr.
Any changes you make to a photo that has been posted to a Flickr account through LR B3 will update the photo on Flickr without loosing comments, notes, etc. if you have the “Pro” Flickr account. It even sync’s that info into LR so you can view it from within the program.
Being a software junkie… I would love to be able to take the time it requires to process through PS, but I currently don’t have that time just waiting to be used. Lightroom does what I need and does it quickly. If I have a photo that I REALLY want to do some detailed processing on, I will revert back to PS and take that extra time to get it perfect.
Unless you already know PS well or have the time required to learn and use all the facets of it, I would highly recommend looking into Lightroom. Try the FREE Beta… if it seriously doesn’t fit what you want to do… then go ahead and spend the big bucks for PS CS5!

AS a long-time user of light room I was very interested see someone else’s take on how to get the best out of LR, as well as an insight into LR3 beta-2. Looking good but as several people have said, it is a breakthrough improvements or just a general natural development of LR2?

The thing I am most impressed with in the LR 3 Beta 2 is the noise reduction. Unless you have the very latest DSLR’s that are able to produce images at high ISO without much visible noise, you need an effective noise reduction system in a RAW processor – LR3 Beta 2 is the nearest thing to perfection I have seen so far in a software package.
I have been processing quite a number of RAW images using LR3 Beta 2 such as:

LR 3 gets my vote and I will certainly be buying a copy when it finally gets released.
