If You Had $2000 to Spend on Photographic Gear – What Would You Buy?
If I gave you $2000 to spend on camera gear – what would you buy?
We did this hypothetical exercise around 18 months ago (with $1000) and it was a lot of fun and I thought that seeing as many of us are researching photography gear for Christmas presents that it might be fun to do again to see what everyone is eying off!
And because I’m feeling generous this year I’m going to increase your hypothetical cash to $2000 instead of $1000 (you can thank me in comments).
So here’s how it works.
- Lets use Amazon’s Camera and Photo area as a guide so we’re all talking the same prices.
- Surf through around and identify what camera gear (cameras, lenses, flashes, accessories) that you’d get if you had $2000.
- Tell/and or show (with a link) what you’d get in comments below. Tell us why you selected what you did.
What would you order?
- Perhaps a little Canon Powershot S95 (currently the ‘most wished for’ camera on Amazon)
- Or maybe a Nikon D3100 (one of the most bought cameras in our popular digital cameras list)
- Or perhaps you want to use the opportunity to try a Micro Four Thirds Camera and would pick up the Olympus PEN E-P2.
- Or maybe you’d just blow the whole lot on a lens you’ve been lusting after – like the Canon 85mm f1.2L II USM (the one I’ve been eying off for months now…. Sigh….)
Don’t get too bogged down in the details – I’m really just curious what everyone else is looking at gear wise at the moment.
Looking forward to seeing what you ‘order’ (hypothetically of course).

I eyed the E-3 for so long that now it’s affordable there is something called E-5 and if I had the money it would be mine

Rats. I was kind of hoping we’d get to the part where you’d say, “Do that and at the end of the day we’ll choose a random winner for a $2000 Amazon gift card!”
Anyway, for me it would be the Nikon D7000. I love my D90, but would like the upgrade and particularly the 1080p video. Body is about $1200, so that would leave me $800. I’d get a pair of pocket wizards and the Nikon 85mm 1.8 which I have rented quite a few times, but have yet to purchase.
December 4th, 2010 at 12:22 am
I already have a new Canon 60D coming for Christmas (to replace my aging XTi), and I’m happy with my bag of gear for my regular shooting.
If I had $2K to spend, it would probably be on a Canon 100-400 lens so that I would have a longer focal length available for shooting birds or other wildlife…. That’s not something I do everyday, but it would be nice to have the option!
December 4th, 2010 at 12:22 am
I would put it with the other cash I’ve saved and I would buy Canon 5D Mark II. I really need to upgrade from my entry level DSLR.
December 4th, 2010 at 12:23 am
Not easy this imaginary money !
Ideally i’d get a nice sharp 70-200mm f/2.8 Nikon lens but that is just over the £2k budget on amazon, so it would have to be a new body & flash, so a D300s with SB900 coming in at about $1700
December 4th, 2010 at 12:23 am
Definitely Nikon’s 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII. Yes, slightly over USD$2000, but close enough.
December 4th, 2010 at 12:25 am
I’d blow it on a Nikon D7000 most probably!
December 4th, 2010 at 12:26 am
Elinchrome Ranger Quadra RX with an ECO Ring
Not on amazon but should be under $2000
December 4th, 2010 at 12:27 am
I would buy Canon’s EF 35mm f/1.4l USM, this would cost me about $1,300 dollars. I would use the other $700 for a 4th 580 EXII. If you meant to say $10,000 then it would be a Leica M9 with a 35mm Lens.
December 4th, 2010 at 12:31 am
it’s easy for me. the canon 5D mark II.
December 4th, 2010 at 12:31 am
I really want a 5D MkII but even used I can’t get it for $2k, so I’d probably go with the 50mm 1.2… yum!
December 4th, 2010 at 12:32 am
I’ve been getting a lot of use out of the video functions on my Canon 7D. If I had $2000 to spend, I’d probably upgrade my laptop to a desktop Hackintosh and 30″ display for video editing. (No Amazon links to share.)
December 4th, 2010 at 12:33 am
Nikon D300 $1250
Nikkor 16-85 f3.5/5.6 $589
Done!
Thanks for letting me play
)
December 4th, 2010 at 12:33 am
It’s about $60 over budget, but I’d be getting the new Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM II. Will go great on the 5DII!
December 4th, 2010 at 12:35 am
50mm f/1.2L
December 4th, 2010 at 12:38 am
I don’t have the 85mm F1.2 nor do I really need it since the F1.8 is much cheaper and produces awesome results. I would ask Santa for a Ranger Quadra RX set for great lighting on location.
http://elinchrom.com/sets.php?base_set=42
December 4th, 2010 at 12:41 am
I would buy :
- nikkor 85mm f/1.4 AF-D – 1435 $ – for portraits
- Panasonic Lumix LX5 – 399 $ – for hiking / every-day photos
- Panasonic wide-conversion lens + adaptor for LX5 – 150$ + 37$
which makes a total of 2’021 $ (I add an hypothetical 21$ to match
)
December 4th, 2010 at 12:44 am
Here is what I would get. Canon 7D here http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-7D-Body-Only/dp/B002NEGTTW/ref=sr_1_6?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291387275&sr=1-6
Along with this lens http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Standard-Medium-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B00009XVCZ/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291387452&sr=1-1
Oh to have $2000 to spend on that. Thanks for the fun!!
December 4th, 2010 at 12:45 am
hmm difficult,
I would sell my canon 70-200 2.8 L and upgrade to the mk II version, and sell my 17-40 f4 L and upgrade to the 16-35 2.8 II,
Or i would get a 7d, and accessories (grip, extra batteries, 580ex ii, PW Flextt5) as a backup
I already have the trio of L Prime lenses, but if i had an extra 2k, i would definitely upgrade my zooms or get a backup body
December 4th, 2010 at 12:49 am
Hmmm… The Sony 28-70 CZ 2.8 (http://goo.gl/d7jD4)
Or the Sony 16-35 CZ 2.8 (http://goo.gl/d7jD4) and the Sony HLVF58AM Flash (http://goo.gl/Uxo7B)
OR maybe I’ll wait a few months and buy the alpha 700 successor
December 4th, 2010 at 12:50 am
Definitely the Canon 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L as I’d love to have a longer telephoto along side my 70-200 F/4L although the 85 F/1.2L would be tempting as well. I hardly do any portrait photography though so the 85 wouldn’t be as useful as the others. If I could fit the 17-40 F/4L in there somewhere I would!
If I was doing professional shooting I might consider the 7D to have as a backup body, looks rather nice. Oh the choices!!
December 4th, 2010 at 12:57 am
Full Studio light kit! And a couple more 580EX II strobes
December 4th, 2010 at 1:01 am
Canon 100mm macro f/2.8L – $884
Gitzo GT3541XLS tripod – $880
B+W Kaesemann 77mm Circular Polarizer – $180
I think that’s about $2000.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:01 am
I just did a little exercise with priorities for my business. #1 is a funky new camera strap. May seem like a strange priority, but the whole “Nikon” black is not me at all. After that, new, better not-green-tinged UV filters. After that, we get into the big boys – 28-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. I’m already well over my $2k at that point.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:01 am
Nikon D7000 + 28-300mm VR
December 4th, 2010 at 1:01 am
I’m always looking for a little bit more, so the closest I can come is http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D300s-Digital-18-200mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B002JCSV7G/ref=sr_1_11?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291388052&sr=1-11 at @ $2099. I’d really love to upgrade my D40 & have been drooling over this lens since it was released.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:06 am
I’d buy a Nikon D700. It’s slightly out of the $2K range, but I’d cough up the difference.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:06 am
My first reaction would be to upgrade my body and go full frame with the Sony Alpha A850: http://t.co/ThBzXhQ But I think the more practical buy would be a Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G: http://t.co/DWQzCdO

with a 2x tele-converter
Living in wide open spaces, I’ve all ways been wanting to reach out and get closer to distant views. This is what I’m sving for
December 4th, 2010 at 1:09 am
I’d buy @Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8″ and “Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4″!!! It’s the best variant for my needs ’cause I like to shoot portraits.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:16 am
Well, I actually just spent about $2400 on a Canon 24mm F1.4L and Canon 100 mm F2.8L IS USM
. I think i’d use the “extra” money to pick up accessories – i’d love a high end tripod, wireless shutter release, new filters, camera luggage, some HDR software…
Or, use it towards travel expenses to Iceland to have a photography vacation!
December 4th, 2010 at 1:26 am
Sigma 50mm 1.4 HSM (http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-50mm-Nikon-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0018ZDGAW/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I21BPE133DJZXJ&colid=YFZDPN5VVB5W) with either a Sigma 85mm 1.4 HSM (http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-85mm-1-4-EX-Nikon/dp/B003NSC2XE/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IF40AYMOM97LV&colid=YFZDPN5VVB5W) or Nikon 105 DC (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-105mm-DC-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEOK/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I19EVSEBRN28TS&colid=YFZDPN5VVB5W)
Probably would shoot for the DC but I’m not really sure!
December 4th, 2010 at 1:27 am
Let me try to migrate from prosumer to DSLR:
- camera: Canon EOS 60D $999
- lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM $719.99
- lens acc: Zeikos ZE-HLH77 77mm Hard Rubber Lens Hood $4.79
- lens acc: Hoya 77mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filter $46.35
- lens acc: Tiffen 77mm Circular Polarizer $60.89
- camera acc: two Transcend 32 GB Class 10 SDHC Flash Memory Card, 2 x $50.99
- camera acc: Opteka LP-E6 2400mAh Ultra High Capacity Li-ion Battery Pack $19.95 (bargain!)
- camera acc: Canon Remote Switch RS60 E3 $21.34
- camera acc: Pocket Pod Camera Bean Bag $26.95
That’s 2001.24. Well, OK, I’d smile nicley to clerk expecting some discount
OK, I already have decent Manfroto tripod and a Speedlite 430 EX, so I’m cool with those. This would make it for the first need. Then another range lens would be targeted and also ND filter kit would be needed, but that’s another story. That $2000 would make it for me.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:30 am
Canon 7D and 100mm f2.8 L Marco
I hope that enough
December 4th, 2010 at 1:30 am
I would have to sped it on lenses. The only problem I have would be choosing from my list.
http://tumblr.ohmylife.co.uk/post/1495341055/i-think-this-would-be-my-dream-lens-collection-if
December 4th, 2010 at 1:33 am
Easy – a Nikon D700…I could come up with the extra $350 difference.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:34 am
Definitely a 60D and EF-S 17-55/2.8 would go just well with it
December 4th, 2010 at 1:35 am
a single L series 50mm 1.2 Prime lens and use what is left over for a top of the line flash.
I shot with one of those lenses a year ago, IT is the ultimate lens.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:36 am
As for me it’s time to move past the kit lens and move up to some Canon L glass. I plan on getting the 70-200mm 2.8 II this month.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:37 am
I would get a Nikon lens (24-70mm/2.8)
December 4th, 2010 at 1:38 am
It is an interesting question. One that I had asked myself (and others) on my blog: http://maximegousse.wordpress.com/2010/11/01/photo-gears-whats-my-next-move/
I recently decided that I am *not* going for the Nikon D7000. Regrettably in a way. But this opens a whole new world of possibilities.
For $2K I would surely go for the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR II. here: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-70-200mm-VR-II-Digital/dp/B002JCSV8U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291390582&sr=8-1
Max
December 4th, 2010 at 1:39 am
If I were just getting into digital photography and had a $2K budget, I’d get the Ricoh GXR, the 28mm lens/module, the 50mm lens/module, and the electronic viewfinder.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:40 am
If I had $2000 for Camera Gear, I would buy:
1. Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF Autofocus DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-12-24mm-Autofocus-Nikkor-Zoom/dp/B000092M1T/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1291390266&sr=1-1
because I realy need wide-angle. I like wide angle because of its ability to put a lot to the same frame
2. Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX Fisheye Nikkor Lens
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-10-5mm-2-8G-Fisheye-Nikkor/dp/B000144I30/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1291390303&sr=1-1
even superior wide-angle…
I use Nikon D90, so I have to focus on DX (Cropped) lenses, otherwise it is weird.
If I had Full-frame camera I would buy only :
* Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-14-24mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCTCI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1291390706&sr=1-3
December 4th, 2010 at 1:40 am
With $2,000, I could easily get D7000 and a Nikkor 50 mm / f1.4 AFS. I can use the setup for portrait, landscape, and low light photography: reception, concert, etc.
There will be left over cash, so I will get BlackRapid RS-7 strap. A SlingShot 102 AW camera bag. And finally, a good supper at a nice restaurant.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:40 am
Nikon 85mm f/1.4
December 4th, 2010 at 1:40 am
I’d buy a waterproof (bag) casing for my D90, upgrade to Photoshop CS5, and buy a 18-105mm lens so I didn’t have to switch lenses so often. I’d spend the rest on stretched canvas prints of my photos and maybe a series of sensor cleanings!
December 4th, 2010 at 1:40 am
@timgray – actually, I think my CV Nokton 50mm f/1.1 is closer to ‘the ultimate lens’.
;>
December 4th, 2010 at 1:42 am
The Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000053HC5?ie=UTF8&tag=cocoafr-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000053HC5

December 4th, 2010 at 1:42 am
I’d get a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS (about $1100) to replace my non-L 70-300 IS USM and the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM (about $900). They be a nice addition to my 7D kit. I would have include the S95, but I just bought it
December 4th, 2010 at 1:44 am
I would definitely put some more money and upgrade to Canon 5D Mark II with 24-70mm f2.8 L
December 4th, 2010 at 1:45 am
If from scratch:
- Nikon D90 with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens @ 1029 USD
- A couple of 8 GB Class 10 SDHC cards @ 80 USD (both)
- Nikon 50mm f/1.4G SIC SW Prime Nikkor Lens @435 USD
- Spare battery @ 38
- A sling bag in the likes of LowePro or ThinkTank (just so nicely reviewed here) in the 100-180 USD
- The 350ish remaining gazillion bucks would go on accessories like filters, cleaning kits, etc.
Now… given I just bought the D310 (I had to brag about it) I guess the 2K would go mainly on glass and a not so expensive flash unit like th SB400 or SB600… I wasn’t gonna spend on flashes, but since you’re giving money away, this would be a good chance. What glass are we talking about? maybe a 85mm f1.4 and/or 85mm micro… then, If I had something left, I would go for the speedlight.
December 4th, 2010 at 1:48 am
The new Olympus E-5 and a 50mm macro lens… that would kill the $2000 pretty fast. Ha….
December 4th, 2010 at 1:52 am
Sorry… did I mention that I just bought the D3100??? yesterday?????
I just can’t stop talking about it…
December 4th, 2010 at 1:55 am
Two lenses for my old-but-serviceable Pentax K10D, both noted for their outstanding optical performance.
The equivalent of a 50 mm lens on 35 mm full-frame:
Pentax SMC DA Limited Macro 35 mm f/2.8
This qualitative review by two very experienced photographers on Photo.net says it all:
An Optical Paragon
The weather-resistant DA* long zoom (92-383 mm-e) with a respectable constant aperture of f/4 — just what you need for photography out-of-doors in all conditions:
“Pentax SMC DA* 60-250mm f/4 ED IF SDM
Here’s a set of measurements from Photozone.de:
Photozone.de
According to my calculations, that still leaves me with $220 to spare which almost covers the cost of a Wimberly Sidekick to go with the DA* 60-250 mm (it costs $250):

I’m looking so bad to get that lens, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II !!!

mmm a D700 body … it’s a little bit plus expensive than 2K$…. but.. it’ill be ok 4 me
December 4th, 2010 at 2:05 am
First, I would buy an iPad to carry in my camera bag. Then I would see what lenses I could get with the remaining money. I’m really looking into a wide angle lens like the http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-10-20mm-EX-Aspherical-Canon/dp/B002D2VS9U/ref=sr_1_14?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291392158&sr=1-14 and some others.
December 4th, 2010 at 2:06 am
I just got some new lenses that I’m happy with/learning to use, so I think it would be mostly little stuff…
$399.00 Fujifilm 3D camera (I’ve wanted one for so long): http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-Real-3D-W3/dp/B003ZHV70M/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291390532&sr=1-1

And, I know it’s not listed on Amazon, but I’d buy up some more actions from Kevin Kubota: http://www.kubotaimagetools.com/store/catalog/category_258_All_Products.html
December 4th, 2010 at 2:07 am
With $2000 I think I would buy:
1) Nikon 24-70mm – $1500 (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-24-70mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCT3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291392060&sr=1-1)

3) A bunch of extra Batteries.

I already have the 5D MKII and just about everything else imaginable. Just one item left on my personal shopping list… and it happens to cost right about $2000. A Canon f2.8 70-200 lens.
I rented one to try at a wedding last month, and now find myself returning to the Amazon page to lust after it every few days. Lots of unexpected expenses the last few months have kept me from grabbing it though…

a nikon D5000 with 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. i like the kits with the Nikon School Instructional DVD, i still need help – plus i want to by comfy with my new camera! i would also buy a back-up battery (one in the camera one charged ready to go) and possibly more memory. i currently have an 8 year old digital minolta Dimage 7i. time for a new camera please!
December 4th, 2010 at 2:28 am
Buy 2 DSLR cameras. One for myself and one fro my wife. Buy the same cameras so we can buy one set of lenses. Probably get 2 T2is or 2 D3100s. Make sure both cameras have 32GB SD cards as well. Also buy flashes and tripods for both camera.
December 4th, 2010 at 2:29 am
Below are the things that I would buy.
Canon EOS 7D Body Only – $1600
Sara and I have a Canon XTi that we used as our intro into DSLR camera. We would like to start being able to shoot together and want to move up in gear. We have a great lens so we would just need the body.
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lens – $360
One thing that I don’t have right now is a prime lens. It would be a great addition to a new 7D. With a prime lens I can grow as a photographer, I need to use my feet. Without a prime lens I tend to rely on the zoom too much.
Sandisk 16GB Extreme CF memory card – $85.46
Yeah I know that puts me a little over but I would need to have a card for that new camera…

Probably a couple of flashes & some stands.
December 4th, 2010 at 2:38 am
I’d spend $2000 on a nice vacation and use the gear I already have. Nothing worse than having all the right equipment but nothing to use it on.
December 4th, 2010 at 2:43 am
I’d wait and buy the Fuji X100 when it’s released.
December 4th, 2010 at 2:44 am
I’d wait and buy the Fuji X100 when it’s released.
December 4th, 2010 at 2:59 am
Since the goal is to keep it under $2000, it would have to be either the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-14-24mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCTCI/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291395234&sr=1-10
or the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8.
Since both of those would still leave me with some money to spare, I’d probably add an SB-600 http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-SB-600-Speedlight-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0002EMY9Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291395378&sr=1-1

70-200 f/2.8 L II IS: 1929$
LP-E6 Battery Pack: 59$
With 12$ left to spare
December 4th, 2010 at 3:10 am
I came out to my car to find my windows busted and my camera bag with all my gear was gone. My car insurance wouldn’t cover the gear as it was not permanently attached to the car and my renters insurance wasn’t worth the money I had been paying them. I am starting all over (with new insurance of course).
Canon 5D II – Amazon – $2499.00 Doesn’t fit in the $2,000 budget
Canon Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS USM – Amazon $2069.00. $69 over budget.
What DOES fit:
2 Pocket Wizard Plus II Transceivers – $169 Each Total $338
1 Sekonic L358 – $279
Canon Speedlite 580 EXII – $414.99
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens $884
Canon LP-E6 Battery (Spare) for the 5DII when I CAN afford it $59.61
8 Pack Duracell Rechargeable Batteries $22.49
Grand Total $1,998.09
December 4th, 2010 at 3:26 am
If I have $2000, I would definitely go for “Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens “. tats $1400. and a canon T1i, If I can add some of my own I would go for a T2i. and I have a gr8 setup to capture Landscapes
Everyone is happy.

Now that I’ve stopped drooling enough to post this.
G-Technology G-SPEED eS PRO 8 TB High Speed SAS RAID Array.

I’d like to have a new EOS 60D, but I’m really needing a storage solution. One I can trust not lose everything when (because if isn’t usually an option) one drive fails.
December 4th, 2010 at 3:32 am

Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 Lens (although I would struggle with the decision to wait and save for the 70-200)
December 4th, 2010 at 3:37 am
I would use the money to help buy a 5D MK II or perhaps put it towards the 50mm f/1.2L!
December 4th, 2010 at 3:41 am
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens $1369
I absolutely love prime lenses, but my 50mm 1.8 on my cropped Canon 7D sensor isn’t wide enough. I’ve never splurged on an L lens, but I’ve always wanted to.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 w/ 20mm f/1.7 lens $600
Gosh, I would have so much fun with this camera. It would probably be on me more often than the Canon 7D just based on the size and convenience.
December 4th, 2010 at 3:46 am
If I had $2000 sitting around doing nothing…I’d get me a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 which I believe comes to around $1600 and with the remaining money I’d get a Canon G12 for everyday use.
December 4th, 2010 at 3:51 am
I’d get a Nikon 35mm f1.4 or make a down payment on a Nikon 200mm f2.0
December 4th, 2010 at 3:55 am
+1 on the 70-200 2.8 IS. sigh
December 4th, 2010 at 3:58 am
I currently have 40D and also my 85mm 1.2 II
My lens feel underpowered after I put it on my friend’s 5D MkII
So I’d probably save my money and put down extra to get a 5D (I may be waiting for MkIII instead though)
December 4th, 2010 at 4:05 am
I Would get 2 Sb700, Pocket Wizard Mini tt1, 4 X Pocketwizard Mini tt5 for Nikon, and a 77mm Circular Polarizer.
December 4th, 2010 at 4:12 am
Hmmm… If someone just gave me $2000 I would pick up the Nikon D700. That leaves a little left over for a few extra SD cards. Of course I’d then have to spring for a new F lens for it, but if I had the camera handed to me, I could manage the lenses.
December 4th, 2010 at 4:28 am
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-7D-Digital-18-135mm-Standard/dp/B003BM7X6I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1291400427&sr=8-4
http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-Control-Shutter-EOS-D2000-Compatible/dp/B0018205KE/ref=acc_glance_e_ai_purchase_similarities_t_33
http://www.amazon.com/Tiffen-67mm-UV-Protection-Filter/dp/B00004ZCJK/ref=pd_sim_p_3
I believe that leaves me very close to $2000. I would love this camera; please tell me this is a contest and I have won. I would like this camera and I am saving my money to buy it. My only concern is that there will be a new model early spring due to the increased competition with the micro 4:3rds and the increasing size of chips in smaller cameras.
Is this likely?
December 4th, 2010 at 4:35 am
This is a simple question for me as we just found out we have a baby on the way. It’s time for me to save up and get my first SLR and I am to make it a Canon 60D (body only) with the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM.
60D – $999
70-200mm – $636
50mm – $360
—————————-
TOTAL $1995
The prime is perfect for the close up shots of the baby in the hospital and the 70-200 should provide the versatility for all the activities it will have as it grows up. One thing I learned while photographing my current kids is versatile zoom + fast shutter are essential. Plus the 60D gives the flexibility of quality stills and quality video. I can’t think of a better, or more versatile setup than this.
December 4th, 2010 at 4:36 am
I’d spring for Nikon’s landscape masterpiece, the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens. That would leave me with a couple hundred left over. I’d sell both my D300s and my 17-55mm f2.8 on ebay and hope to net about $1700. With the $200 remaining from the original $2000 and the freshly made $1700, I’d buy a D700.
Pretty cool with some selling and a $2000 investment I could be shooting full-frame with Nikon’s best wide angle glass. Of course, the issue with this is that the D800 will come up early next year and immediately make my gear seem worthless/out-dated and I’d need another upgrade. Does it never end?
December 4th, 2010 at 4:40 am
I would have to spend the money on some instruction. Some one on one with a true pro. Even though I have a 5D Mark II, I could take better pictures with a point and shoot if I had more talent.
December 4th, 2010 at 4:44 am
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
I’d blow the wad on this baby. We rented one for a trip we took to Africa and it was amazing!!
December 4th, 2010 at 4:44 am
Probably a Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L and a 430EX II. Maybe an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L instead.
December 4th, 2010 at 4:46 am
Canon 16-35L to round out my canon lenses (I have 24-70 and 100-400 now) for the 5d II.
If there is enough left I would pick up the 100-300 micro 4/3 panasonic for my GF1.
nothing says Christmas like a bunch of glass wrapped up.
December 4th, 2010 at 4:51 am
I’d get the Canon 24-105mm L lens (to replace my 3yr old 17-85 which I dislike more and more as time goes by…).
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-24-105mm-USM-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000AZ57M6/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291401965&sr=1-1
That’s just over $1,000, so then I’d probably splurge on a nice tripod. Depending on what’s left over I might then buy me a couple Epiphanie camera bags. =P
http://epiphaniebags.com/
December 4th, 2010 at 4:56 am
Oh man, dream come true! I would finally be able to finally to upgrade from my point and shoot to a DSLR. I don’t even need the $2,000 in total. Here’s all I need:
1. Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Black) with Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS + 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 Zoom Lens + (2) LP-E5 Battery Packs + Case + Accessory Kit
2. Transcend 16 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC6E
3. Canon Deluxe 200 Tripod
December 4th, 2010 at 4:56 am
I would really like a macro lens, so my choice is:
Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
December 4th, 2010 at 4:59 am
I’d buy a full page ad in the Tokyo Times and lobby for Sony to build a true successor to the a700.
December 4th, 2010 at 5:02 am
A Canon EF 24 f1.4 II, since my version I broke last year.
Also as many sturdy Manfrotto light stands as i could get.
December 4th, 2010 at 5:04 am
I would get the 24-70L along with a 580 EXII and a filter! I need to upgrade from that 6 year old kit lens!
December 4th, 2010 at 5:04 am
Most definitely the Nikon D7000 – I lust after it daily.
December 4th, 2010 at 5:08 am
Oh my… and I thought I had to wait a couple years for the price to come down before I could step up from my 10D. And the DA* 16-50/2.8 may be used, but looks like a bargain just the same.
http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-K-5-Digital-Black-Body/dp/B0043M6F14/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291402665&sr=1-1

I’ll even throw in the $30 difference. I do believe in Santa… I do. I do.
December 4th, 2010 at 5:12 am
If you really want a fantastic kit that would allow you greatest flexibility, competitive IQ, and high dynamic range, I’d look toward Nikon or Sony. So here’s my favorite selection.
Nikon D7000 $1480
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D7000-DX-Format-3-0-Inch-Body/dp/B0042X9LC4/ref=sr_1_5?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291402136&sr=1-5
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR $360
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-55-300mm-4-5-5-6G-ED-VR/dp/B003ZSHNCC/ref=sr_1_6?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291402205&sr=1-6
Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S $193
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-35mm-AF-S-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291402285&sr=1-4
If I wanted something lighter, more portable, I’d give the Sony A55 a try, combined with Sony’s 35mm f/1.8 and the 70-300 telephoto.
Sony 35mm f/1.8 $175
Sony 70-300 $800
Sony A55 $950
These are selections I’d probably advise to someone who’s looking for a complete kit. Otherwise, yea, if you have a dSLR already, a nice fast stabilized f/2.8 telephoto or a super sharp fast prime like Nikon’s new 24mm is always good
December 4th, 2010 at 5:13 am
I’d get a 7D with a 17-85mm f4/5.6 IS for $2050 total
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-7D-Body-Only/dp/B002NEGTTW/ref=sr_1_7?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291402620&sr=1-7

Hands down…70-200mm 2.8L IS USM. PERFECT.
December 4th, 2010 at 5:43 am
Like some people the Canon 5D mark II ’cause mine Canon 450D get hold
December 4th, 2010 at 5:49 am
If I had two grand to spend on photo gear I would get some portable lighting gear…some strobes, light stands, light modifiers…..battery packs

Nikon D700, I need a FF body for all my Nikon FF lens badly
December 4th, 2010 at 6:07 am
I would also purchase a Nikon D700. I am ready to go full frame after rockin’ a pair of D90′s. I would sell one of my D90′s to make up the difference. I need the high iso range of the D700 for indoor sports photography, and would fit my 7-200 2.8 and 24-70 2.8 perfectly. I might go with a refurb for around $2000. That way I could get the tc-20 III for my 70-200.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:10 am
I’d go for a Canon 7D, and a 24-70 f/2.8L, but I don’t think there’s enough money in the pot for the lens as well, so I’d possibly get the Canon G12 alongside the 7D.
December 4th, 2010 at 6:13 am
Thats easy:
http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-K-5-Digital-18-55mm-Black/dp/B0043M6F1E/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291406421&sr=1-1
Would more likely opt for the option with the K-5 bundled with the new 18-135mm lense but that not on Amazon at the moment.
The K-5 has maxed out the DXO sensor scores for APS-C cameras (currently best scoring camera) and has great handling to boot. Even better, Pentax has not broken lense backward compatibility and every 35mm SLR they have ever made will still work with it! I currently have a k-x and I am really enjoying the big selection of lenses on the (new + 2nd hand).

In October I made $3500 on a website I wrote in about 10 days for a local politician. He won, and so did I. All of the money went to camera equipment. The highlights: Canon 7D with 18mm-135mm lens; 50mm 1.8f lens; 70-300mm lens; Tenbra Shootout bag; flash; a bunch of odds and ends; and a Pixima Pro 9000 printer. (I was supposed to get a $400 rebate on the printer, but Amazon messed me up.) It was nice, really nice, to be able to spend the money where I wanted instead of on bills and stuff because it was an extra job that dropped out of nowhere. And, yeah, the Canon 70-200 f2.8 is sweet. I work at a Penn State campus in marketing and with the student newspaper staff. We got one over the summer. We call it the Big Mama lens, and the kids have a great time shooting sports with it. Spoiled for life….
December 4th, 2010 at 6:51 am
I currently have a Canon 450D and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. I love shooting with a wide aperture but hate being restricted to a prime lens. Therefore, I’d get these lenses:
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS EF-S $990
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-S-17-55mm-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000EW8074/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291408980&sr=1-2
A copy of Photomatix Pro 4 $99
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B002CIP12U?tag=betteraddons-20
Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 Tilt Shift Lens for Canon SLR Cameras $1210
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B00009XVDP?tag=betteraddons-20
As you can see, i’m a little over budget, but I would sell off an existing lens for about $200 since I’m replacing it with the 17-55mm lens.
The reason for the tilt shift lens is because DPS hasn’t covered it as far as I know. I’d use it to write an article with examples!!
December 4th, 2010 at 6:53 am
Panasonic GF1 with 20mm pancake lens + 45-200mm zoom lens + 14-45mm zoom lens + external live viewfinder for sure. drooling on my keyboard just thinking about it.

I’d go for the new 70-200 2.8 VRII Nikkor in a minute! I’d need to come up with a nickle or two to make up the difference, but so what if you are dreaming!

Canon 70mm-200mm f2.8

That’ll go nicely on my 550D.
December 4th, 2010 at 7:03 am
I’m quite a novice with a point and shoot, so for my imaginary $2K, i’d get myself an entry level DSLR to hone my skills. I have started to use more of the manual controls on my SX130, so to actually use it on a DSLR would be cool, i think. i’d also get a lens that gives a good shallow DoF because i love the blurring in the background of pictures which i can’t quite achieve on my P&S as it only goes to F/3.4.
So, it will be:
entry level DSLR
lens
tripod
camera bag
For the remaining change, i’d like to travel somewhere and test out my new gear. the location will probably be somewhat close, but it’s okay–just somewhere other than my surroundings to start applying what i’ve learned so far here on DPS.

For a starter system from scratch:
- Canon 60D ($1000) w/ 15-85 ($723)
- Canon 430EX II flash ($260)
For me (since I already have a 5D Mk II, and a bunch of lens):
- Panasonic DMC-GH2 w/ 14-42 ($1000)
- Panasonic 100-300 lens ($600)
- Fotodiox Lens Mount adapter for Canon lens ($30)
I want to play with something a lot lighter and a little smaller than what I usually do.
December 4th, 2010 at 7:10 am
That could be a toughie since I can go two routes for upgrading my Pentax gear. I would have to fork over just a little more to get them….
Route #1: Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, Pentax 10-17mm fisheye, Sigma 85mm f/1.4
Route #2 Pentax K-5, Pentax 10-17mm fisheye
December 4th, 2010 at 7:33 am
an Olympus E5 with a 12-60 lens. the lens would have to be on sale, tho.
December 4th, 2010 at 7:55 am
If I had $2000, I’d probably buy some nice glass. Probably the Canon 135L, which would take me halfway there, but I’ve also been wishing for a Canon TS E (tilt shift) lens… which would hog up much of that cash. Oh, it’s nice to dream…
BTW, if you’re jonesing for the Canon 85L glass, you might want to look into the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 that was released earlier this year. I’ve heard of many pro shooters selling their Canonikon 85mm for it — including a friend of mine who is a seasoned wedding photog and LOVES it (says she’s hitting focus on 95% of her shots, even wide open.)
December 4th, 2010 at 8:02 am
Give me 2000$ now, and I’ll get
– Pentax 31mm F/1.8 FA Limited for $1030
– Pentax SMCP-FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited for $830
As for the remaining $140, I’ll spend them on big prints of nice photos (trherefore, obviously, not mines
)

I would buy probably buy a bundle set with a DSLR, some lenses, and some other goodies. Most specifically I would get the Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body + Canon 18-55mm IS Lens + Canon 75-300mm III Lens + 16GB Card + Canon 2400 DSLR Gadget Bag Case + Accessory Kit over Amazon. I would then have to hand it all over to my father who wants to photograph eagles and hawks.
December 4th, 2010 at 8:13 am
I buy a Nikon D7000 (body only) and a NIKKOR 28-300mm.
December 4th, 2010 at 8:28 am
Hmmmm the possibilities…
Either a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II
Or a D700 body.
December 4th, 2010 at 9:11 am
okay SO I’d do the Nikon 35 mm
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-35mm-AF-S-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0/ref=sr_1_2?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291417454&sr=1-2
or maybe the
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-10-5mm-2-8G-Fisheye-Nikkor/dp/B000144I30/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291417775&sr=1-2
and the 28-70 cause I like it better than the 24-70, http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-28-70mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEOR/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291417706&sr=1-1
and if I can cover the difference the D300s cause I need a few lenses and you didn’t say I could save up for the 700 http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D300s-Digital-Body-Only/dp/B002JCSV6M/ref=sr_1_9?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291417495&sr=1-9
why these choices cause I think they would fill out my bag as a photog pretty good And I wouldn’t need to rent any more stuff for necessity
December 4th, 2010 at 9:13 am
Mostly lenses! I have a Canon XSi with the kit lens as well as a 50mm 1.8 II on the way, so I’d want to get things that are fun to play with and a better general-use lens.
-Lensbaby Composer ($253)
-Canon EF-S 10-20mm f/3.5-4.5 USM ($713.90)
-Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro ($390)
-Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM ($409.29)
And to store/carry all of that new gear, I’d get the Crumpler Karachi Outpost (L) backpack ($250).
That brings me to $2016.19! A bit over, but I’d be willing to cover the difference
December 4th, 2010 at 9:20 am
Nikon D7000
Nikon 18-200mm VRII Lens
And call it done.
Give my D40 and kit lens to my father, drag him to a photography class and enjoy taking pictures with him.
December 4th, 2010 at 9:54 am
Nikon D700 if I had $2000
December 4th, 2010 at 11:17 am
A Canon 7D body. I have all the lenses I need. Maybe a class to learn how to use all fo them together.
John
December 4th, 2010 at 12:19 pm
olympus e5 and 12-60 lens
December 4th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
$2,000 for camera equipment? ok, i’d use it for a noctilux f/.95 … err, i mean for the downpayment on one
December 4th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
If I had $2000 I would get the Cannon EOS Rebel Kit for $1,073.05 ( http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-75-300mm-Telephoto-Accessory/dp/B003R3MB8G/ref=sr_1_9?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291433188&sr=1-9 ) and with the remaining $926.95 I would buy the Gitzo tripod kit for $914.75 ( http://www.amazon.com/Gitzo-GH1780QR-Magnesium-Traveler-BackPack/dp/B001QW39XQ/ref=sr_1_74?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291433099&sr=1-74 ).
December 4th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Easy. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens for $1499
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-24-70mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCT3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291433195&sr=1-1
and
Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for $320
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LENO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291433501&sr=1-1
December 4th, 2010 at 2:53 pm
Hmmm…I need some quality glass, but I’d want to maximize the $2000. There are a lot of lenses on the used market in fantastic condition, so I’d hit eBay/Craigslist and go with…
- Nikon 28-70mm 2.8 ($800)
- Nikon 80-200mm AF-S 2.8 ($950)
- Nikon 60mm 2.8 AF-D Macro ($250 with some persistence!)
December 4th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Canon EF100mm f/2.8L macro; Speedlite 580EX II; Dutch Hill P900Extended Tripod
This would nicely compliment my 24-105L and 100-400L zooms
I’ll need to scrape up my own cash for the final component; EF-S 10-22 USM
December 4th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
TS-E 24mm II – I’ve always wanted a Tilt-Shift.
December 4th, 2010 at 7:26 pm
Well hard to think of.
Well ye, lenses ofcourse
Sony 50mm F1.8
Sony 85mm F2.8
Sigma 70-300mm F4-F5.6 (already getting it)
Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-F4.5
And if I’m still within the budget, A fisheye lens
I currently have a Sony 18-55mm
December 4th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
Most definately either the Olympus 35-100mm f/2.0 Zuiko Lens for E Series DSLR Cameras
Olympus for mu E-3 and pay difference
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000BKP1JE/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1291465441&sr=8-1

December 4th, 2010 at 11:43 pm
I have been eying for Nikon d300s for long now. For me it, would be Nikon d300s with NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens. Sweet! Happy Holidays Everyone. Cheers!

December 5th, 2010 at 12:18 am
$2000??? Easy….. Nikon D300 and a couple of lenses like a 35mm f1.8 and probably a Nikkor 16-85 f3.5/5.6 or maybe a 50 mm f1.4
I would finally upgrade from my entry level DSLR (Nikon D40) and I would upgrade my lenses with a couple of good ones.
Dream… dream… dream…
December 5th, 2010 at 12:30 am
Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 zoom ($1400, refurbished via KEH/Amazon)
Ricoh GR Digital 3 ($599)
December 5th, 2010 at 12:49 am
Ah, love the what would I do with $2,000 thought… I just bought a new lens for my Canon XTi, but what I would really love is a new camera to put that beauty of a lens on. I have always wanted the 7D but way out of my price range. so I would love and happily settle for The 5D a beautiful camera in its own right.
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50D-Digital-28-135mm-Standard/dp/B001EQ4BY0/ref=sr_1_22?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291473857&sr=1-22
And I concur with the left over change I would splurge on a Starbucks latte, preferably something with luscious chocolate and caramel..

The Fuji X100 is going to wipe out half of the $2k. I shoot with a 5D and the 35/2 EF and the 50/1.4 EF. I’m assuming the Fuji is going to replace the Canon 35/5D combo most of the time. Would like to have a nicer 50. Tried the 50L and didn’t like the size and focus problems. Tempted to test out the Zeiss 50/1.4.
December 5th, 2010 at 1:56 am
I’m still very happy with everything my D40x body does, so time to splash out on lenses and cheap accessories:
Nikon Speedlight SB-800 External Flash (£199.99)
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG Macro (£119.00)
Nikon 50mm F1.8D AF Nikkor Lens (£97.99)
Zeikos 0.18x Super Fisheye Auxiliary Lens w/ 52mm Adatper (£49.98)
52mm WIDE-ANGLE Lens (£14.95)
52MM Double-Threaded 3 Piece Neutral Density Filter Kit ND2, ND4, and ND8 Filters!! (£10.00)
Hama Star 63 Tripod With Free Carry Case (£15.45)
Photo Studio 32″ Light Tent Cube Soft Box Softbox 80cm w/4 backgdrop (£19.99)
5-in-1 Photographic Light Reflector – 32″ (80cm) Silver, Gold, Black, White & Translucent (£14.97)
Old-style Polaroid camera, used (~£40)
TOTAL approx. £585 = $913
Save the $1087 for some developing, printing, or a rainy day
December 5th, 2010 at 2:01 am
I’d have to go with a simple Nikon system with a few prime lenses and a great camera strap:
Nikon D7000 Digital SLR Kit w/18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 DX VR Nikkor Lens – $1600
This camera is just amazing. I have the 18-200 lens but the kit lens should do just fine.
Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras – $200
For $200 there is no better glass for your Nikon. Super sharp images at f4-8 and great depth of field from f1.8-3.2. This lens stays on my D7000 90% of the time.
Black Rapid Strap RS7 Black Fabric, Curved Ergonomic, with ConnectR-2 and FastenR-3 – $60
This is the best camera strap I have ever used. After I bent down to pick up something and had my old camera fall off my shoulder I decided to invest in a good cross-shoulder camera strap. This is THE best. I’m about to upgrade to the RS7 (mine is like an RS4).
Manfrotto 7302YB M-Y Tripod with Ball – Replaces 725B – $125
I have a Manfrotto, don’t know what model. I rarely use a tripod but they are necessary if you shoot a lot of architecture, nature, or want to take a photo that you will be in. I’d trust any Manfrotto, mine has been abused pretty badly and is still working perfectly.
Nikon 7072 Lens Pen Cleaning System – $10
This is a great way to clean your lenses in the field. Much better than the cloths that you have to touch with your hands to use. They get oil from your hands on the cloth over time this can transfer to the lens.
A few UV filters
Need to get some UV filters for the lenses, these can be had for $8-10 each.
Total: Right at $2000
December 5th, 2010 at 2:40 am
I see lots of Nikons on the lists, but my heart is set on the D5000. That tilt screen is sweet! Put that with a 200-400 Nikkor zoom, and I’m done. If that puts me over, then the D5000 with a 1.7x teleconverter, and a selection of filters, gadgets, books and software with what’s left. I’m a happy girl!
December 5th, 2010 at 3:08 am
Pentax K5 and some accessories!
December 5th, 2010 at 3:18 am
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Nikkor-Ultra-Wide-Angle-Cameras/dp/B0013BEEUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1291483014&sr=1-1
December 5th, 2010 at 3:48 am
Thanks Darren. You’re very generous again.
I would go full-frame DSLR with a Sony Alpha 850 ($1900) and 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 lens ($199). This would put me $100 over so I ( or friends and loved ones) would have to kick in the last $99.
I really like my Pentax K200 but I miss the full-frame viewfinder of 35mm gear. It probably also has something to with “old dogs and new tricks”.
Merry Christmas all.
December 5th, 2010 at 4:32 am
I would totally buy a Nikon ML-3 Compact Modulite Remote Set
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-ML-3-Compact-Modulite-Remote/dp/B00009XV5L/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1291487226&sr=1-1
an ND110 filter, although I’m not sure which one is good.
a macro lens a wide-angle lens, a polarizing filter and a uv filter.
December 5th, 2010 at 5:33 am
I would purchase Canon 7D Body
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-7D-Body-Only/dp/B002NEGTTW/ref=sr_1_7?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291490267&sr=1-7
And the Tamron lens 28-75mm F2.8 lens
http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-28-75mm-Aspherical-Canon-Digital/dp/B0000A1G05/ref=sr_1_45?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291490974&sr=1-45
My reasoning is I just started my photography business going this year & I need to upgrade to a faster camera & a faster lens, but I am frugal so always looking for a good deal
December 5th, 2010 at 6:15 am
I would go for the Nikon 24-70 2.8 http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-24-70mm-2-8G-Nikkor-Angle/dp/B000VDCT3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291492594&sr=1-1 $1719
I’ve been dying to get this lens for a while but with moving to another country I had some other expenses to take care of first.
I’d also get a pocket wizard and some small CF cards to make up the rest of my Hypothetical 2 Grand
December 5th, 2010 at 6:20 am
With a litlle extra the
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-70-200mm-VR-II-Digital/dp/B002JCSV8U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291493574&sr=8-1

The two of them would be fantastic
December 5th, 2010 at 7:11 am
Since we can dream here: Nikon 7000, extra battery and a Sunpack flash. I think Nikon has really come out with a good camera there. I love my Sony Alphas, but I’d like to try the Nikon.

The Olympus E-5 and I’d give the left over money to the local photo club or a photography based charity such as
http://help-portrait.com/#/home
December 5th, 2010 at 9:09 am
A 17mm tilt shift lens. For sure. Just rented one for a week and I fell completely in love.
December 5th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Oh My… Decisions, Decisions
Nikon D7000 (i want to play with video)
or
Nikon 85mm 1.4
or
Nikon 200-400mm lens – I know. I have to add another gazillion dollars of my own imaginary money
Next year can we please have $10,000 imaginary dollars, I just have tooooo much to shop for!
December 5th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
I’m pretty much covered as far as equipment goes so I’d spend it on lessons and a travel holiday. I’ve got 2 bodies (500d and 1ds), 9 lenses and boxes of accessories (filters, flashes, tripods, cables, brackets, lights and batteries). What I need are some lessons so I can maximize the use of my equipment and spend the rest on a nice trip so my family can share in the fun of my new found bounty.
December 6th, 2010 at 12:07 am
I really like my old Nikon D50, it has experienced so much
If Santa would say: Hei lady, it is time to upgrade your photo shelf I would choose:
)
- some books how feel and catch a right moment; portraits photographing and about exposure. Probably also big book of pictures for inspiration. I think It is useful time to time thumb through the books and remember simple things. Like with camera, it is useful to go through all settings time to time
- Nikon D90 body. As I’m not a profesional photographer, so I do not need the latest top gears.
- of course some “snouts” from lens shelf : like: Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro Lens (as I like a close-up photos) and some 80mm for portraits.
- one extra battery
- cleaning kit. Sometimes I’m a bit messy
December 6th, 2010 at 2:22 am
Hey that is cool stuff (even though it is hypothetical, that was so generous of you
). Okay then, lets go shopping!
1. I’m looking for my first SLR – so the entry level one will suffice and I’m going to go with the Nikon D3100 itself. That is $639.
2. The next in my list is a couple of good telephoto lenses – I’m a novice with these stuff, so I’m going to trust Amazon that they will provide me with the right accessories. So I would go with:
a) Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Nikkor Zoom Lens – $198.99
b) Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras – $502.58
3. A spare battery pack – Nikon EN-EL14 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery for Nikon D3100 SLR and P7000 Digital Cameras – $31.95
4. Transcend 16GB Class 10 SDHC Card (TS16GSDHC10) – $24.49
5. A nice backpack to fit all these stuff – that is not going to cost more than $150, I must say!
So the total – $ 1547.
Money still in the wallet – I think I’m going to go with a nice point and shoot Powershot SX20IS..
December 6th, 2010 at 3:22 am
Canon’s EF 8-15mm.
December 6th, 2010 at 3:37 am
My first purchase would be a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens
$1420.00. I would like to have a fast super Wide angle Lens so i could take low light city scape and night pictures. And another Canon 580EX II Speedlite TTL Shoe Mount Flash for E-TTL II for $420.00 and a Canon ST-E2 Transmitter for $220.00.
December 6th, 2010 at 5:04 am
I would buy a newer Canon body to go with my EOS 20D and a nice heavy duty tripod.
December 6th, 2010 at 7:49 am
Thanks for the offer. But I travel light — my old, injured, re-injured and re-injured again vertebrae resist and truly resent additional weight — So my rule of the road is… for each “thing” I buy, I must retire another … trying harder brings amazing photos…besides I am still happy with the things I have.
Give my $2,000 to a food bank:-)
December 6th, 2010 at 10:11 am
I’d buy the new version of the Canon 7D!
December 6th, 2010 at 10:13 am
The Nikon D7000 for sure. Then I’d have to think long and hard. Maybe the Tamron 180mm f/3.5 1:1 macro lens.
December 6th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
I have a Nikon D200, a 50mm f1.8, and a 18-200mm so have had my eye on:
Black Rapid Strap RS4 – $54
Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens – $890
Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight – $596

Sigma 10-20mm EX, top landscape performer for price.
Slik Sprint Pro 3way II tripod, easy to haul around w/ the rest of the gear.

Cheers Mate!

Merry Christmas !
December 6th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
…OK maybe I took this posting too far and went and actually bought the Leica M9 this weekend. Excessive?
December 7th, 2010 at 12:52 am
I have a Canon 7D w/ the 70-200mm IS II, and if I had $2000 to spend it would have to be on the 24mm 1.4 II. That is about $1,600 with a filter. I would then purchase the Manfrotto 055xprob $150, and the Manfrotto 701HV video head $150. With the remaining $100 I would purchase the Rode Videomic. I’d have to pitch in $50 to pay the difference.
December 7th, 2010 at 3:40 am
Hmm, would love the Canon 1D Mk IV, but I guess I’d only be able to buy about half of it. The Canon 5D Mk II would be a close3 second.
December 7th, 2010 at 7:48 am
Splurge Time!!!!!!
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L, EF 70 – 200mm f/4L, EF 85mm f/1.8 and a carbon fiber tripod (my current one weighs a ton!)
December 7th, 2010 at 10:46 am
If I had that 2K. I’ll buy Canon Camera 7D (Body) $1598.00 use with mine own lens 18-135mm
# http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-7D-Body-Only/dp/B002NEGTTW/ref=sr_1_7?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291679713&sr=1-7 #

and may be next year come with my new chance just get one tripod.
which makes a total of $ 2,011 $ (I add an hypothetical 11$ to match )
at used on amazon may should be under $2000
December 7th, 2010 at 12:40 pm
I’m decided to buy Canon Camera 7D (Body) because I had mine own lens 18-135mm already, and this is new Ship I think it can do faster than my 20D. thinking to buy more lens later if I can, wide angle lens it is next interesting to buy.
and one Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash cause I had old one It’s not enough space between me and target. ( portraits-Sport)

December 8th, 2010 at 1:16 am
This one is easy…I would get the Canon 5d Body:”
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-II/dp/B001G5ZTLS/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1QEDM5AC5RHUR&colid=1OGR56ZC5BGN
Canon EOS 5D Mark II 21.1MP Full Frame CMOS Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
December 8th, 2010 at 6:38 am
First off…
Canon 580EX II.
Second off… Alienbees Powerpack.
Third off… spend the rest on more studio lighting.
December 8th, 2010 at 11:48 am
Yes, you said exactly what I would get, I’d blow the whole $2000 on the Canon 85mm 1.2!!! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE that lens, but unfortunately I don’t have an extra $2000+ to spend on it right now.
December 9th, 2010 at 2:27 am
I’d love to add the Canon 24-105mm f/4L to my collection and a 580EX Speedlight would be really sweet!

Being a complete novice with just an E-P1 with a decent set of lenses (the Olympus 14-150, 20mm 1.7, and the kit lens), I’d say I’d spend my hypothetical $2k on the following:
- A good photography workshop (let’s say one of Derrick Story’s workshops; $499)
- A really good tripod and monopod (let’s say $400 for both)
- A 2TB external hard drive to replace my 500 GB external drive (~$120)
That leaves about $980 to buy a few prime lenses that Olympus & Panasonic promise to roll out next year (I specifically want a good 50mm and a good wide angle lens).
Or I could just blow the whole $2k on a Leica X1 for no good reason
@P L Nickle: “trying harder brings amazing photos.” So true.
December 9th, 2010 at 7:43 pm
I would buy Canon EOS 7D ($1600) and Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon (400$}
December 10th, 2010 at 1:05 am
I would buy a whole new set up as I had to sell mine due to problems I was having. I miss my camera.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-200mm-II-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B0033PRWSW/ref=pd_sim_p_5
Canon 70-200 telephoto. want it!
December 10th, 2010 at 1:22 am
If I had a spare $2000, I purchase a canon 24-70mm F2.8L lenses to cover the gap in my existing lenses collection. With the rest of the money I would upgrade my existing Canon 550 flash to the Canon 580 flash.
December 10th, 2010 at 1:26 am
I’d beg or borrow another $500 and get a Canon 5dII body to go with my 5d and two lenses so I don’t have to change bodies during my aerial photography, exposing the innards to wind and dust, and, of course there is that HD video to open up new projects.
December 10th, 2010 at 1:41 am
I would love to have some nice lens for my cannon T1i..
December 10th, 2010 at 2:16 am
Nikon D3100 with a big zoom lens
December 10th, 2010 at 2:21 am
I have been looking at the wide angle lenses lately and am very interested in the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 AT-X 116 pro DX lens for Canon. This lens has some great reviews and even though it is second party it sounds like exactly what I want. I also would like a wide format printer such as the Canon Pixma 9000 or 9500. I like the fact that they have individual colors (8 & 10 respectively) and the cartridge sizes are fairly large for a smaller wide format. I have been watching the printer for a couple of years now to see if I could afford it and have been researching lenses for over a year. This is only 1200.00 approx total but it would make me very happy. (I also would like to invest in a Canon 5D Mark II one day but the body only is more than I can afford right now.)
December 10th, 2010 at 2:52 am
I’d get the Olympus E-30 with the 12-60mm lens.
Thanks for letting me dream for a minute
December 10th, 2010 at 3:05 am
For me it will be a couple of nikon sb-600 flashes, a battery grip for my D90 along with batteries, pocket wizards, memory cards etc. Then i will want a 35mm f1.8 along with the 85 f 1.8mm lens and some other lenses that i can think of now, but im sure that will bring it to over $2k…sigh
December 10th, 2010 at 3:05 am
I would buy a new Nikon 14-24 f2.8, a lee big stopper and lee holder. Tha’ts about two grand…..
December 10th, 2010 at 3:13 am
NEW PRINTER! Mine just broke and its killing me to not have money for new one, I would love to have one of the Canon or Epson large format printers. Also a macro, telephoto and fish eye lens.
December 10th, 2010 at 3:33 am
I believe I would use the $2000 to purchase a good 300 mm telephoto lens for my Pentax K200. I would add some Studio Lighthing equipment to my collection. I would like to get into more portrate type photography.
December 10th, 2010 at 3:49 am
A cannon 5d and a 15-500mm lens and a portage light package.
December 10th, 2010 at 4:04 am
A cannon 5d,15-500mm lens,portable lighten system.
December 10th, 2010 at 4:40 am
Canon 7D body only $1598
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-7D-Body-Only/dp/B002NEGTTW/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291919273&sr=1-1
Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod $372.18
http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-055CXPRO3-Section-Magnesium-Castings/dp/B001GIPR5S/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1291919388&sr=1-6
I have just about worn out my Rebel XSi in the last year and really NEED the upgraded camera and as I am using strictly L series lenses, I need a tripod to handle the weight! I would still have to find a way to afford a good gimbal head for the tripod, but that would be much easier if the camera was already mine! The remaining $29.82 could be used toward the gimbal head. Then maybe I could start saving for the EF 500mm L series Super Telephoto Lens that I have my eye on!!!!
December 10th, 2010 at 4:55 am
I would buy this, after lending some money from my piggy bank…
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-70-200mm-VR-II-Digital/dp/B002JCSV8U/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291920722&sr=1-1
December 10th, 2010 at 5:37 am
I have a Canon 7D but the RAW will not work on my Adobe Creative Premium Suite 3 so I would buy theAdobe Creative Suite Premium CS5 at $1,300 and the rest on a Epson P-7000 160GB Multimedia Storage and Photo Viewer + Travel Pack as it has a large viewing screen.
Psst, Santa just leave it at the foot of my bed on Christmas Eve!
Thanks
December 10th, 2010 at 5:43 am
I would buy a Sigma “Bigma” = 150-500 mm telephoto. And, I would buy a good carbon fiber tripod and ball head to go with it. The reason = I went on a photo field trip to Wyoming Nat’l Parks this year and found that these three items would be valuable to capture distant wildlife.
December 10th, 2010 at 6:07 am
The first thing that I would buy would be a Canon 135mm f2 lens, I love this lens and am thinking about purchasing it. I just love the look that it gives to portraits and I am really interested in doing more portrait photography, with the rest of the money I would probably buy large cf cards, a new bag and soft light.
That would definitely be my fantasy if the camera fairy came to call.
December 10th, 2010 at 7:40 am
Nikon D7000 with lens 1499.99, Crumpler bag 295 at ebags, promaster tripod 39.99, a lens cloth or other cleaning accessories and a memory card with what is left.
December 10th, 2010 at 7:42 am
Having just brought a D7000 with a 28 – 105, 55 – 200, 2 SB600 I now would look at the 70-300mm-4-5-5-6G and a Nikon-Filter–67-mm. Add to that the Nikon 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro-Nikkor
December 10th, 2010 at 8:37 am
I would prefer to spend the $2000 on a Canon TS-E 17mm lens and chip in another $50 to get that lens (at $2050). If $2k was the absolute cap, then I would pick up a:
1) Canon TS-e 24L II Lens and a battery grip for my 50D; or
2) Canon 300mm f4 IS and a Tokina 11-16 f2.8; or
3) A Tokina 11-16 f2.8, a Canon 24-105 f4 & a Singh-Ray Filter Gold-n-Blue Polarizer; or
4) A Singh- Ray filter Vari-N-Trio, a Manfrotto 190CX3 carbon fiber tripod, a Manfrotto 327RC2 Head, a Canon 50mm f1.4 lens, a Canon 85mm f1.8, and a battery grip for my 50D; or
5) *this is my last one, really* a trio of Tokina lenses: 11-16 f2.8, the new 16-28 and the old 50-135.
And if there is a Santa, I want a Gigapan Epic Pro
December 10th, 2010 at 9:28 am
Hummmm … I would buy an Sony – AF 70-200mm F2.8 G SSM $1799 for my Sony a-55 … And I would be happy forever
December 10th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Nikon 70-200 f2.8. I’d have to chip in a bit of my own money but getting a magical $2,000 towards it would make me not mind so much.
December 10th, 2010 at 11:15 am
I’d buy a high-grade monitor for image editing, another external hard drive and a new windbreaker.
December 10th, 2010 at 11:29 am
Canon 85mm f1.2L II USM. You nailed it there! Low-light, action photography! No distracting flash. I shoot horses in action and with riders who don’t want to be flashed, this would be the ideal lens for my work.
December 10th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
A Canon 70-200mm, F2.8, L, IS, USM Zoom lens.
December 10th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
I would love to be able to purchase the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens. Ah…..right now, all is but a dream but one never knows when dreams suddenly come to fruition.
December 10th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
I would buy a Canon 7D and a device that would allow me to access it quickly and safely in my wheelchair (and, NO I have never located such a device) so I keep searching.
December 10th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
I really want this lens because I think it would be a great travel lens for my 7d. For a trip to Europe or Australia……one can dream, right. The tripod looks like a great travel tripod too.

This was difficult. Everyone has such great ideas
Slightly over by $28 but I might be able to find it cheaper
December 11th, 2010 at 12:16 am
It doesn’t have to be hypothetical for me. I recently ran into $2000 dollars. I purchased the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G and am saving the other $300 dollars for the D700.

I would by:
Canon D60 (body only) to replace my T1i.
Everything I need for a studio; lights, backgrounds, Light Meter,
I already have great lenses, hum… I think that’s it.

Canon 70-200mm IS f/2.8
It will be a very long time before I’ll have that kind of money, I hope they’ll still have it by then LOL…..sigh…
December 12th, 2010 at 10:20 pm
$2000 for camera gear would make me really happy. It would mean micro four thirds setup for underwater photography. Probably Olympus PEN E-PL1 – $430 with Olympus PT EP01 underwater housing – $600. The rest would go to lighting, two strobes with arms. From Amazon it would probably mean Ikelite DS-51 but twin Inon S-2000 strobes would be the perfect for travel kit (they are small, light but still powerful and TTL is great on them).
December 13th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
Great post, i have exactly this amount for my wish list this christmas, i already have a Rebel XSi with the kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS).
These are my picks:
1. I need to upgrade my laptop, i like to play with CS4, i found this choice pretty acceptable: HP Pavilion dv7-4190us 17.3-Inch Laptop PC, $1,214.99
2. I’m dying to get the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM to upgrade my kit lens, but so far i think i can live perfectly fine with the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II, $459.00 (good news until december 31 Tamron have a rebate for $45, that means $414)
3. Filter for the new lens, Hoya HMC Haze UV(0) – Filter – UV – 67 mm, $32.19 (but amazon is offering a discount of $15,95 after buying the Tamron lens, so this will be just $16,24)
4. Lowepro Lens Case 1W, $12.49
5. I don´t have a tripod, i will go safe with the Manfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro Tripod, $128.90 and the Manfrotto 498RC2 Ball Head with Quick Release, $108.70
6. SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC Class 10 High Performance Memory Card, amazon $49.30
7. And finally Opteka RC-4 Wireless Remote Control, $12.95
Without the Tamron rebate is $2,002.57, will have to wait up to 6-8 week to spend the $45…. i guess i will use those to start saving for my next year wish list!
December 14th, 2010 at 1:05 am
Just got the Canon 7D and would like the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.6-5.6L IS USM lens…I will be shooting motor sports and need the quick response and the zoom of this lens:)
December 14th, 2010 at 3:12 am
I’d get this http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001BTCSI6/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1292260243&sr=1-1&condition=used
I want FX format
December 15th, 2010 at 1:03 am
Well, the one I really want is the Leica M9 so I’d probably plunk down the $2,000 as a downpayment on that, going price $7,000, and either use a card or take out a loan for the rest. Then, of course, I’d have to buy myself a Summicron lens, that’s another $4,000. Start buying lottery tickets? Bank robbery? Just dream?
December 17th, 2010 at 10:20 am
Hmm. . . the easy answer is a Sony A850 body
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSLRA850-24-6MP-Digital-Camera/dp/B002MPPRNG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1292541669&sr=8-4
December 20th, 2010 at 2:47 am
If I had 2 Grand to spend I would Purchase A Canon 7D body which would fit all my other canon lens. And any money left over I would purchase light equipment.
December 21st, 2010 at 4:05 pm
I change my mine. If would say again. can I swith to Leica X-1 just 2 grand finish.
like this # http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002NX13QC/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1292911339&sr=8-1&condition=new #

December 24th, 2010 at 4:17 am

You can get a truckload of very high quality gear if you don’t insist of shopping for the latest model and don’t mind second-hand equipment. I can’t comment on US$2000, but here is what EUR2250 bought me between April 2010 and now:
Canon EOS 40D EUR500 (Second-hand)
Canon EF 50mm /1.4 EUR300
Canon EF 17-40 /4 L EUR500 (Amazon Warehouse Deals)
Canon EF 70-200 /4 L IS EUR700 (Second-hand)
Canon 580EX EUR250 (Second-hand)
Here are several strategies to follow:

Easy! I’d pick up a Canon 400mm f/5.6L and a Canon 1.4X III Teleconverter and Canon 17-40mm f/4L.
Just went full frame and I don’t have something really wide and need to compliment my 70-200f4L.
