It really depends. There are some weekends where I’m out and about and I can take hundreds of photographs in a few hours. There are also some weeks where I don’t even pick up a camera.
March 16th, 2009 at 9:57 am
i like to take 40-60 pics from each of my outings!IMany of them get deleted during my reviews and I publish very few of the pics that remain!
assuming there are 2 such outings over the weekend, the average number of pics fall to 101-250

While my real count is highly variable, I just did the math — My D40x, which I bought 16 months ago, has had about 11000 exposures on it. Divide it out… around 170 photos per week. I am pretty merciless about tossing photos which I don’t like, but I am pretty proud of the ones I keep. :) I know some people will disagree with my method, but I do believe that a photo is fundamentally strong or weak, and that post-processing can’t help a poor photo. If I don’t believe that one of my photos is strong enough, I toss it, learn from the errors, and try again later.

I voted 21-50, but it really depends. This week I shot probably 200 between several basketball games. Other weeks I unfortunately have shot none. That’s my biggest issue is getting out to shoot things.
March 16th, 2009 at 11:00 am
From none to 300 I,d say. Now that I started a project 365 on flickr, it will propbably increase – wich is the whole point of the project of course. There is no getting better without getting involved.
March 16th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Totally variable here – my real job severely interferes with my photography!
Some days, nothing, but others, if I have a project on, or if I’m shooting a wedding, I’ll hit 1000 images in a day.
Other days I can burn through 200 frames just hanging out with my daughter – always a source of inspiration!
March 16th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Mine’s the same as Andrew’s.
March 16th, 2009 at 11:17 am
I assume the poll is how many photos I ‘take’ during the week. I regularly take around 30. But since so many of them are experiments, I only get a good 5 decent shots out of them.
March 16th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
People tends to take more photo nowadays because it is digitalized and not film anymore! ;p
March 16th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
During the winter, I take maybe 50 photos. During the summer I take 1000 easily in a month. It’s too cold for me to go out for any length of time during winter here in Alaska. :)
March 16th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
It’s summer here whole year round (in Singapore/Malaysia).
I spend most of my time in school, if not down in town for a meal or two. I shoot more friends and and buildings most of the time, but I don’t consider myself taking more than 200 shots a week as I go shutter frenzy and I delete most of them. Usually I have only a couple left. (So I voted 1-10!) :(
Anyone can guide me what can I do with my camera in town and school?
March 16th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Take bunches each week, throw bunches away, try again next week. Ain’t digital great GREAT. WOW!
March 16th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I shoot at least 1 roll of film a week for practice/fun and then 500+ digitally if I have a wedding and/or portraits
March 16th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
250-500 sometimes may be litle more. usually I go to one or two weekend parties to make some shots
March 16th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
I’ve turned my 40D’s counter past 10,000 twice now in the 8 months that I’ve had it, so the math says that I should have been taking around 700 photos a week, however I was working hardcore in the fall of last year, and this last month I’ve barely picked it up to do more than take my photo-a-day for my 365 resolution. And then tomorrow I have a shoot where I’ll probably push that shutter button 400-500 times.. so I guess it really depends on whether or not my week is a “work” week or not.
March 16th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
I take 10–50 per day, but I end up keeping 1–5. So, while I could end up taking as many as 350 photos in a week, I end up keeping only a dozen or two.
March 16th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
About 10 a day.
But I my worst critic – Out of these ~50-~60 there is maybe 1 that is good enough to be uploaded to my blog. Once or twice a year I have a really good one :)
March 16th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Probably around 500 images in a week depending on what I have going on.
March 16th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
~6000 pictures / ~20 weeks (since I got my D90) = about 300
March 16th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
As many others have already said…it depends ;-)
In some weeks, I’ll take a few hundred photos or more. In other weeks, I’ll take a minimal number of photos. I try to go out somewhere with some colleagues to go shooting on a fairly regular basis (ie, sunset or sunrise or something), and that keeps my photo count up.
March 16th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I voted for 500-1000. Yep, that’s about it.
My photography habbits evolved like crazy. First I was shooting 2-3 time/month, than 2-3 times/week. And, for the last month, I shot 1-2 times every day and post on my blog.
I’m very proud of that. Shooting a lot is the only thing that makes a difference. It’s not the expensive equipment, tens of read books or whatever.
And i feel a lot better at the end of the day if I shot something that day.
March 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
some days i can take 1 or 50 photos a day with either my iphone or dslr, but i have taken 2000 photos in one day before.
March 16th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Crikey – that’s almost impossible to answer because it depends on where I am and what I’m doing. I went for an average over a typical month and came up with 51-100 :)
March 16th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
not taken any for weeks then took about 150 on Saturday sometimes it’s the right place and time
a few of them are here

March 16th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
My gig shooting and club socials see me shooting at least 800 – 1200 shots a weekend. During the week varies on what ever commercial work springs up.
March 16th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Sometimes i may take a few shots (pending the weather) and other weeks i am take a couple of hundred shots per week. I am waiting for the weather to break so i can get out there and get back into photography.
March 16th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
When I go out, I’ll take between 50 to 200 photos. Sadly I only get to do this once every 6 weeks or so.
March 16th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
I try to shoot something everyday. even if it’s a speck of dust on my sensor. On days where I can’t make it outside to shoot, I will work in my little home studio.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:40 am
Had put it in as 50-100, until I read the comment from DCClark – same camera – just a thousand more snaps! :D
March 17th, 2009 at 1:43 am
My weekly total is almost always racked up on Saturday mornings. Rest of the time I carry a camera but hardly ever use it. Of that Saturday total, maybe 10 percent is considered worth processing. And of that 10 percent maybe 10 percent is worth printing.
March 17th, 2009 at 2:07 am
i go out with my friends every wednesday after school (i’m saudi so the weekend is thursday and friday) i take at least a 100 pictures .. some are not artistic or even that pretty they’re just for the moment .. i also sometimes go out on thurday and friday and i get pictures of family members .. that’s depending on the amount of battery i have .. seeing as my rechargable ones are good for 100-160 pictures.. i also take randome pictures when i’m bored during the week .. sooooo 251-500 was my response
March 17th, 2009 at 4:59 am
When I first got my camera 100’s upon 100’s now that of couple of have gone by, with a whole lot of learning (from this site mostly) the number has slimed down quit a bit.
March 17th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Since I do sports, I’m going to go off curve probably… 500 for a game is normal. 2 weeks a week in spring if not more. None-sports probably 25 a week.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
I got my D300 in April of 2008. I’ve taken about 40,500 / 49weeks = 826. Like Emil I went a little overboard, shooting car shows (lots of Corvettes), parades, fireworks, grandchildren, daughter’s wedding in Vegas, Obama/Biden, models, birds, polar bear plunge, a house on fire, the Red Bull Air Race, and model cars. I’m looking forward to this year to try out my new Sigma 150-500mm at the 4 air shows coming up.
March 17th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
On average about 2 to 3 thousand per week, depends on the events we have on. This past weekend we took over 6000 at a Junior Triathlon.
March 17th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
My manager takes about 25x as many as I do, I actually wonder if his shutter finger is glued to the shutter button and has a brick tied to it. Volume means results, but I prefer to be a little more selective. Both to preseve gear and my time infront of the computer.
March 17th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
On average I think I take around 101 and 250 pics per week. But out of those, roughly 5 make it to my flickr account or even get to be postprocessed. I’ve had my camera for like 2 months and my camera has like 5000 exposures… but I won’t base the math on that. :p
March 18th, 2009 at 12:00 am
It really depends. If I’m out on a weekend, or week, specifically to take pictures, it could be 1500 or more. I love the fact that I can hold the shutter down and rip off 14 pictures, but it can become habit forming. For example, I was trying to get a good shot of Snow Geese flying. Each time I saw a group of them coming close, I focused in and ripped of at least 14 pictures at a time. Most of those “rips” I got at least one decent shot.
Anyway, shooting 14 pics at a time can add up in a hurry. In 90 minutes shooting at a grouping (thousands) of Snow Geese, I probably took over 400 shots.
On the other hand, I may spend a whole day shooting and only take 30-40 pictures. It all depends on the circumstances and what I’m shooting. I put 1500+ in the survey, because that’s what I shoot in an intense photo shooting week.
March 18th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Voted «201-500».
It depends on many things, for example on how busy my week has been. If i have a lot of time and nothing special to do, it may be something like 500-600 frames, sometimes more if i have some really interesting subject or idea. If i have a lot of work i don’t touch the camera at all – i am tired and just have no time for it. Sometimes i can spend hundred of frames on single flower trying to make it a «perfect shot», or i can go to a photowalk and make some two or three hundred frames in less than two hours. And yes, there are times when i leave the camera as i have no mood to take pictures. :)
March 19th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
well… the last 5 months have been out of the ordinary for me since i’m on somewhat of an extended vacation traipsing thru the philippines and surrounding countries. these days i’m averaging shots in the 500-800 range.
March 20th, 2009 at 3:56 am
I voted between 250-500. I guess I’m in the minority. I knew I had a problem. This week, I took 250 pictures of my daughters equestrian meet alone…
March 20th, 2009 at 4:57 am
When I am on a trip (next China 4/15/09) I can shoot 200 a day easy. But my everyday life is much, much less. I do take my camera with me and have been known to pull off the road quickly to capture a shack, a flower, a sunset or sunrise or stormcloud, a funny sign, etc.

I voted 250-500…. My job I can say does not interfere with my photography…. it is actually more of an enabler! LOL… I am a full time Mom so my subjects are around me constantly. I find that I can easily take between 25-50 per day and then when we have a field trip or our weekly play-date I can easily get another 100…. For example we went on a 6 mile nature walk yesterday… I came home with over 250 picts just from those few hours…. But today I haven’t taken very many. I would say with how fast kids grow I can easily shoot over 1000 picts per child (I have 3) in a month or two.
By the way, I would love to learn more about dealing with children in motion!! What are the best camera setting to get kids when they are playing or exercising? I have quite a few where they are just a little blurry…. I hate that – great shots are pretty much ruined b/c they are blurry. I have played around with my camera but can’t seem to quite figure it out yet. Any suggestions would be great!!!
March 20th, 2009 at 9:47 am
One night I took 1650 shots, a particularly good night for photos , I boght my 40d on the 9th of Jan 2009 and have over 16000 shots recorded already , gee maybe I should slow down and no Im not addicted lol just eager !!
March 20th, 2009 at 11:43 am
In 2006 I took 9101 images, last year is was 7695 As everyone else, it depends on the subject and how many backup batteries you have.
March 20th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
I try to use photography as a relaxing hobby. A friend and I try to take one day a week and drive around the local area (Skagit County, northwest Washington State, USA) in search of anything to shoot. Lately it is water fowl (Geese, Swan, Ducks). As soon as the flowere are blooming we will move into that. Web sites such as this one is of great encouragement to not get into a rut and loose the fun. It would be nice to be able to sell images but that hasn’t occured yet though many that have seen my attempts agree that the best are worth hanging on the wall.
I would like to encourage all of you out there to get out and try to share your world with everyone else through your pictures. Let everyone else around you see what makes your world great.

while I tend to agree with Nicky Hurt about not shooting as much in the winter (Minnesota here, so real cold, but still not Alaska cold – brrr) I can still admit to between 20-300 per week in the winter, 95% of which are all indoors (I run a rabbit rescue, so there are always awesome bunnies doing cute/funny things to take pictures of … but in the warm months, and especially summer, I can easily put 3000 shots or more on in a single day, but if I have a big day like that I”m likely to take a day off to load them onto a PC to go through them …
some people call this the ’spray and pray’ shooting, but I am very selective about the set up, lighting, composition and camera settings for all of the shots that I take … I usually shoot with 2 different Canon bodies and a variety of lenses, an older 4.4MP 1D digital body that I’ve had for almost 6 years with around 230,000 shots on it (and still working like new) and a newer 21.2MP 1DsMarkIII … one of the reasons that I take so many shots is because of the very fast frames-per-second speed of the canons … my older 1D digital will shoot 8 shots per second and even the new 21MP 1DsMK3 will go 5FPS … so with all honesty, it doesn’t take all that long to fill a 16 or 32GB memory card with the new body, or a 4GB (the biggest it will recognize) in the older 1D …
as with everyone else that uses this method, I only select a small percentage, sometimes less than 5% of the final photos as what I call ‘keepers’ … not that the rest of the photos are garbage, although there are certainly some of those in the mix every time, but there can be such subtle differences in almost imperceptible areas of the photos from one frame to the next (especially when you get 8 photos every second firing away) that it becomes a matter of mood sometimes when it comes to deciding which I want to print or add to my portfolio …
I know that everyone doesn’t have the means to own or use these higher-end cameras (and you DON’T need them to take great photos at all!) but if you don’t understand my logic here and you ever get a chance to use one, especially one of the high-speed 1D models, set it to multi-exposure and just let it rip and then photograph a scene of a person modeling or just even talking … when you go back and scroll through them you’ll be surprised at the tiny little changes in the way their eyes move or their face changes in 1/8th of a second (or faster in one of the new models) that can make all the difference between a good photo and a great photo
one more thing about the cost of these cameras … you don’t have to be rich to own one of these … you can get the older Canon professional 1D digital bodies for $400-$500 or so if you look for them carefully, and even though they are only 4.4MP, they will BY FAR outshine *any* 12MP point and shoot, and most other prosumer DSLR cameras -even new ones- when it comes to image quality … if you’re in the market, it’s worth looking into … and as I mentioned, mine has 230,000 shots on it and it’s never needed anything more than a standard cleaning … they are water and dust resistant and you can drop them without damaging them .. the whole series is very rugged and made to last – if you’re thinking about spending $400 or so on a used digital Rebel, you should consider a used 1D instead and see what it’s like to use a camera that originally cost $5,500 … enough about that
anyways … that’s my take on how many photos I’m likely to shoot in a given week … and when I’m doing photo shoots with models it’s completely different and that’s when I really start taking a lot of photos, I count on 3000-6000 for a typical 4-6 hour shoot, but it’s been as high as 10,000 when using 4-5 cameras in a studio … I know that some people are concerned with the wear and tear on their gear, but this is exactly the type of abuse my cameras were designed and made for, so I don’t have any worries there … of course it does take a lot longer to go through all of the photos and decide on which to fully process and put in the ‘keepers’ folder, but other than that, it’s not costing me anything at all … digital RULES! – before digital, only the super, super rich (certainly tnot me!) could afford to shoot like I do and get away with it … can you imagine how much it would cost, in both money, time and supplies, to take a few thousand photos in one photo shoot and hen develop them all to go through them? – that’s insanity …
I would encourage anyone with any digital camera to try out several methods of shooting … try going real light on the shutter button and set up each shot like you’re Monk and maybe only take 5 photos the whole day … but also try out the ’spray-and-pray’ method that I use (also taking your time to set up the shot and frame it with care) … and see which works for you – with digital it won’t cost you any money to try it out! – the most important thing is to have fun doing it …
good comments so far, it’s interesting to hear all of the different opinions on this subject

Maybe this has been said already, but the next question should be:
“Of the __ photographs you shoot per week, what percentage rank as your BEST photographs?”.
Anyone who claims to take 1500+ images per week might only keep 2%-5% for publication, printing or purchase.
Five years ago I would shoot 300+ per day of which maybe 200 were fantastic and worthy of print. These days I know my camera and equipment far better, thus I may shoot 500 per week, of which around 100 would the best thereof, yet only 25 at maximum would be worthy of print, and only 5 worthy of purchase. I like those odds.

My best hobby is photography & I love to take photograph of landscapes including flowers, bushes, etc..and i used to take too, but the problem i faced is that i don’t the actual which camera is the best for them? and i want to take the basic photography courses too which i have never taken before.

Photography helps with my hypertension, so I take pictures daily. I average about 150 photos per day. All of which are nature photographs. Out of each “batch” of about 150, I have about two-five really good pictures. As the weeks progress, I have noticed the number of good pictures increases, as well. I RARELY delete photos. Instead, I burn them to CDs. I am waiting until after my new Digital 101 class begins, so that I can share the faux pas with my teacher. Hopefully, he can tell me how to improve my photography errors.
Happy Shooting Everyone,
Cindy
