Most of that I can agree with...You need the right equipment, but you also need the technical skills. 95% of what I shoot is sports. I need to turn over as many images as possible in the span of the event, typically baseball and softball, to print proofs and sell prints on-site. You don't have the time to be "technically" perfect all the time. However, you should know the technicals prior to the event. I shoot mine almost exclusively aperature priority as I cannot control the backgrounds, it also makes the subject stand out almost as if in 3-D. I also shoot loose so I can insure I don't loose appendages... THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN KNOW AS A SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHER IS "THE SPORT". If you don't have a clue what is going to happen next you will more than likely miss the "good" shot.

The image was taken at the Whittlesea show this weekend with 55-200 at 100ISO f/9 1/320 at 135mm. It needs photoshopping a bit to tweak it but I'm pretty happy with it and the 100 odd others I took over the weekend. I'd be happy to receive any comments but the title of this thread is break all the rules and as I'm not sure what rules I need to be applying I'm writing my own set, probably frought with danger but thats how I'll learn.
Thanks guys.
Very nice shot. Your timing was near perfect.
