Default Request: GIMP

I am have been desperately trying to navigate myself through GIMP and being a "hands-on" learner I am having difficulty processing the written online manual. Does anyone have "practical" lessons - I have plenty of pix to experiment with. Would it be beneficial to invest $$ and get PSE? I am still in a learning curve stage and really did not want to spend a whole lot of money and I have heard some good things about GIMP (namely the FREE price tag)...thanks for any help!!

Your learning curve for PSE is going to be the same. GIMP uses a lot of the same concepts as PSE.

Go to YouTube and type in GIMP. You'll get a ton of very helpful tutorials, with video to help you understand what the heck they are talking about.

I usually type in to google "gimp tutorial" and then whatever I am looking for. You usually have to dig around a little to find the right tutorial but they are out there. Some tell you step-by-step what button to push, others tell you the concept and expect you to know what button to push. There isn't one site that has all the tutorials.

There is a book for Gimp but it got mixed reviews. I think with some time and determination you could teach yourself what you need to know.

Good luck!

Did you find the manual in the documentation of the official Gimp site (http://www.gimp.org/docs/)? Right below that is a link to lots of tutorials covering a whole range of concepts.

When I started with it, back in about 1998(!) I recall working through a version of the floating logo tutorial a few times, experimenting with different tweaks. That opened up two essential concepts - layers and masks - and also introduced me to the curves tool. Even though it doesn't directly address working on photos, it might be a good starting point.

I've learned alot from www.meetthegimp.org

Go to the table of contents, and you will find about a hundred tutorials.
