Thanks.
Lot's of shooting different subjects in different conditions helps, as does understanding the basics. .

When doing the panning on the race car, did you use a tripod for any of them? I've tried the panning motion and about 1 in 20 is tracked properly. I know I need to practice more but I'm just wondering if a tripod is helpful.

Always hand held when panning, and if using an image stabilised lens then panning mode will be on (if it has a panning mode otherwise it will be off). At motor racing the only support I may use is a monopod, never ever a tripod.

You may find this tutorial helpful.

Default DOF to create Separation

Some very good tips. Thanks!

Here's some recent shots that use a shallow DOF to create separation:

Dear Richard,
How about a video tripod or tripods that support panning? Are they better than monopod for panning?

I think only if you are looking at a screen or just panning over a small range or movement.
I have never ever seen pro photographers using tripods at motor racing events where you do a lot of panning.
