Default Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6

May I request your help on how to use a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 on a Canon EOS 450D? The initial photos I took are too bright or almost white and I don't know how to set-up my camera using such lens.

Thank you in advance for your help.

There's nothing in the lens that would cause it to over-expose your photos. Could you share the settings you're using, and maybe post an example photo?

Sorry but I can't remember the setup of the camera when I used it. Since I'm just starting to learn on how to use my Canon EOS 450 and the new lens, I tried all the dial features such as P, TV, A, M etc. Attached are sample photos. In the photo (filename 0172), the table napkin is supposed to be light green in color and not white.

Would greatly appreciate it if you can help me re this matter.

Here's our EXIF data:

Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/1250 second ===> 0.0008 second
Lens F-Number / F-Stop = 56/10 ===> ƒ/5.6
Exposure Program = aperture priority (3)
ISO Speed Ratings = 1600
Aperture = ƒ/5.66
Exposure Bias (EV) = 2/3 ===> 0.67
Metering Mode = pattern / multi-segment (5)
Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length = 70/1 mm ===> 70 mm

I've bolded the settings here that are problematic. First of all your EV bias is set to overexpose by 2/3rds of a stop. What that means is your camera has a light meter it uses to determine a proper exposure, which has been manually overridden to expose the photo by nearly twice as much as the meter sees fit. Fix that by holding your EV button and rotating the command dial back a couple of clicks until it's back on the center of the meter. (consult your manual if you don't know what I'm talking about)

I'm not sure if the ISO is manually set to 1600 or if Av priority set it that high due to the overexposure in EV, but I can tell from the extremely fast shutter speed that it didn't need to be that high. Generally you want your ISO set as low as it will go, unless you're in a low light situation and it's the only way you can maintain enough light to get a good exposure. 1600 in daylight is, uh, bonkers. You probably could have gone with 100 or 200.
