Many times we find that we have to shoot subjects through a fence. This is often the case at a zoo or at a kids sporting event. You probably hate getting the fence in the picture, but you can make it vanish if you have your settings correct. Yesterday I was playing around in my yard and took two shots of my swimming pool. I took them both at 300mm focal length and was about 10 feet away from the fence. I shot them fairly wide open, well wide open being f/6.3 on my Tamron 28-300mm lens. In the first shot I focused on the fence itself as you can see below:
![]() Not exactly a great shot of the pool is it? The next one I carefully focused on the far side of the pool through the chain link, notice the difference in the image taken from the exact same vantage point: ![]() While its not the most attractive image with the solar cover in place, it gives you an idea of how to make that nasty fence simply vanish from your image.
