Thanks very much guys.

A couple more examples of what can be achieved by varying the shutter speed.

#5 Hand held & 1/1250 second.

Cockatoo.

Camera Canon EOS 40D
Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture f/7.1
Focal Length 300 mm
ISO Speed 1600
Exposure Bias -2/3 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire

#6 On a tripod & 1/3 second.

Rocks & water.

Camera Canon EOS 40D
Exposure 0.3
Aperture f/18.0
Focal Length 90 mm
ISO Speed 100

I like these last two examples. This really contrasts the effect of slow and fast shutter speeds on an image. Wings stopped at fast shutter speed and water still flowing at a lower shutter speed. Thanks.

Nice to see you getting "exposure" on FB Richard - this was a wall post today from DPS. Thanks for all your hard work in attempting to get us to understand, some of it does go in!

Dear Richard,

Issit possible to have slower shutter speed and panning on the flying bird so we get sharp head and motion blur movement?

What are the challenges to achieve that/?

@ccting

It is possible, but difficult. Expect a lot of failures.
The bird is not just moving, it's wings are moving also, in relation to the body and head so they will be blurry as well,
The other thing you maybe be shooting at a very slow shutter speed (to get the background blurry), possibly <1/30 second and shooting hand held with a long lens.

#7 You will most likely get results similar to this (taken at 1/15 second wit a 400mm lens on a mono pod).

Keep in mind with birds in the wild that you have no control over your subjects (like when what direction and, how fast they will fly )

If you do want a clean back background it is a lot easier to do it by selecting a better point of view..
