Default You need it when?

So this morning my lovely 16-year-old son told his mother that he needed a picture of two carved wooden masks we have hanging on our wall for a high school art project. So, instead of taking photography, (which my two other children took in high school) he took an Art class thinking that the only thing he'd have to make is pottery or draw stick people. But it's also an Art History/appreciation class as well (and he hates it. After returning home from dropping him off at school, I found two wooden masks that I collected on travel assignments, one is an Australia aborigines' mask and the other from Kenya's Masai tribe, laying on my desktop.

Now my question is? Before or after showing him some wrestling moves last night, why didn't he tell me that photos were needed before his 10:30 am class. Hell, we could have set up the flash units last night and spent more father/son time together instead of being rushed this morning. Oh well...........at least I got to use a bit of brain and eye exercise at such an early hour. I used a black back drop, set up four of my 550 EX flashes, each set at power levels ranging from -1/3 to -1 and 2/3 settings, one camera right, one mask right and left at about 45 degree angles and one in back, used as a back light to add separation from backdrop.

Guess I'm such the dad

Great work, Jim. Looks like there are some integration errors in the uploaded photos though.

Jim ,

Very unique masks and nicely captured . Does appear the uploader is still misbehaving ...
( though better luck than I was having with it )

TFS,

you did what????? I have to see the setup....I don't have enough money to take pictures of masks....only a popup flash for me......maybe someday the hot shoe will get used....I like your shots though through a thin veil of raging jealousy!

Susan - Awwww Jim...such a good daddy. Great photos of some pretty awesome masks! -- well actually, i don't want him getting an "F" and being academically ineligible right before the SK Mat Invite this Saturday

equilution & jofrost - Great work, Jim. Looks like there are some integration errors in the uploaded photos though. -- thanks........my hair is turning gray, both because of him and the uploader.

I fired the flashes off by using the ST-E2 wireless transmitter on my hotshoe. It's amazing how the flashes communicate with one another these days. I don't have to think anymore, just fiddle with output settings and arrangement of flash positions.

Great shots Jim! And, you're a good dad. Don't think it will be a short-lived thing, though. I'm 68 and have 5 grandchildren; the high school one does the same thing to me. After he gets to school, he remembers what he needs for that day and calls me since I live in the same town and I am retired.

Hahahaha, that's why when the last one moves out. I'm buying a sailboat and sail off into the sunset
