Smile my first post ever.!!

hi folks. my name is vishal.i reside in mumbai, India. photography is a new found hobby for me.actually i shifted from painting to photography for the lack of creative ideas i felt .i am efficient at painting from other sources like photographs, other paintings, but wanted to do something original, hence started clicking snaps, and now i am in love with my digi cam and photoshop.

i have a nikon coolpix L19 camera.

i surfed a bit about photography and benefits of a dslr over point and shoot. but i am still to convince myself worthy enough to buy a dslr.

what i am looking for is the kind of snaps where the 'subject is clear and the background hazy' i suppose its called depth of field, right ? so ow can i achieve it with my camera, or is it exclusively the territory of a dslr..?
thank you, please comment on the following snaps.

Welcome. What you're looking for will require a DSLR and shallow lens. For entry, I'd recommend a Nikon D3000 or D5000 and a 50mm f/1.8 lens. That will give you the shallow depth you're looking for at a very good price.

Hi there Rookie. Welcome to DPS.. You did a great first post with some nice textures and colours and I especially like the silhouetted tree. Thank you for sharing them. I hope you enjoy your time here and most of all. Have fun.

Dave.

Hi Vishal, WELCOME to DPS
The first poster did answer your question...you will need a DSLR for what you are trying to acheive. Your shots are interesting and full of texture. I love the tree, but all of them are good.

Hi Vishal. Welcome to DPS. Be proud that you are at the right place to learn(my personal experience). Let me answer your question. What I understand is you want to show what you want present by have DoF on the subject and keep the rest out of focus. If so, congrats you have done that already in your second pic. It shows the right side of pic very clear and not the left. I am also a fan of such photography and I have taken some good pics with bokeh effect. You can see them in my bug series and old pics. for ex, http://digital-photography-school.co...d-returns.html . Please believe that I have a Point & Shoot camera only. You can see the DoF on Lizard and rest of the place. I kept asking the same question as like you to my frnd and he taught me the things. So don't give up and don't feel for not having a DSLR. Lets rule the Photography world with our P&S camera until we get a DSLR.
Cheers
-Raveen
