Default New guy here and to photography!

Hi, I just picked up my new Nikon D5000 with a 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens. I cant wait till i actually know what Im doing

I read on a thread about taking pictures in a lit room or even outside on a sunny day and you still can achieve a black background around the subject. Here is my attempt, not to bad for a beginner.

Is there a name for this type of shot? I find it a lot of fun taking these in well lit areas.

fixed the picture issue

Seems that you had problems while transfering the files. We can see grey stripes on them.

Those are great for a beginner! I think they're great for an experienced photographer! You did great with the black background, and the colors are so vivid. One silly question - why am I seeing a line through the photos?

Thanks, Im loving this hobby. Its a world of difference using a better camera. The point and shoot just did not cut it for me.

I cant figure out the line thing. Ive tried several times to upload and it keeps coming back. the files are fine in the original location before the upload. Ill try to fix that line thing

Welcome to DPS.

Your photos are good to be new at photography.

I think there should be a problem with either with you internet connection or with the server when uploads the files.

I strongly suggest you to use an external image hosting, like Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing or Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket, and then you only need to use the little yellow button in the reply window toolbar to share the link to your photo in that hosting.

Thanks for the tip! This way is now much easier then uploading.

The settings I used.

Lens: Nikkor 18-55mm
F-stop: f/3.5
Exposure time: 1/200 sec.
ISO: 200
Exposure bias: 0 step
Focal Length: 18mm
Metering: Matrix(Nikon default, I think)
Flash: +1

I used "S" mode, although I was able to do it with "a" mode as well

the setup:
[IMG][/IMG]

I found the farther away the subject is from other objects in the background, the darker and easier to get the shot you want. Also, watch out for light, white or reflective items in the background, that will throw more light back at lens. I have read a lot about people being intimidated to use creative lighting and speed flashes, I am actually looking forward to getting a few. If I had more control over my light and flash and its position, I think I can get some great depth in some of my shots.
