Thumbs up My photography class started today :)

I was pretty disappointed with today's class at school. We were sent outside to take photos in the dark (street lamp light) of the park trees on auto mode. Total drag and impossible. I couldn't find the way to turn off the flash.
Then I made my team to break the assignment rules and shoot at least on P.

(EDIT// Ok, for the record I'm not a total beginner anymore. I mean I've learned the basics on here DPS during the past year. Of course there's always much more to learn, duh. But I don't think it's cool to send people who don't know how to use the cameras out on their own. They should at least know how to turn the camera on the Auto mode, eh? )

Later we practiced portraits in natural light. We had fun outside and I loved taking photos with this Canon EOS D40.

(this was taken with my Sony)
Niina & Sami

These I took with the Canon:

If I'm honest I have a feeling that I've learned more here than I'm gonna learn on that class. Especially if it keeps going like this...but we'll see.
I'm hoping he'll teach us about the film stuff and more technical things.

Thanks for looking! ^__^

on your camera, you have to go to the flash menu and set the flash to off. Then a tripod is critical after that......when you disable the flash, your camera will adjust its settings to shoot a long exposure based on the available light in the scene....at least, that's how it works on my point and shoot

I know all that, I've been studying these things here on DPS for over a year now, but thank you ^___^
I checked the menu a million times. Either I'm stupid or blind or it really didn't turn off from there. And I didn't find any specific flash menu...
Does anyone have that camera? Maybe they could tell me how to turn it off in the Auto mode. Not that I would love to shoot on auto mode, but I guess it could be a useful piece of information anyways.

Patience is a virute. You have to crawl before you walk. There's a very good reason you were sent out to take pictures in auto mode. It will all come together as you get further into the course. Wait and see.

well these photos are lovely. I especially love the black and white image. Hang in there with the classes, it's early days yet - putting things into practice is a different matter from just reading about it a lot. If you found the outdoor photography tough today, then that's a great focus for your future learning. Ask your teacher for help with your camera settings too. And do your best to stick with the assignment rules, even if difficult! He probably set the rules for a reason! Keep going, and good luck.

you won't be able to on auto, but my point and shoot has another shooting setting where you can disable the flash....are you required to shoot auto? The day time shooting as evidenced above are really good esp the black and white image....I just looked on cnet and yes you can set flash to off but it must be in one of the other modes and not auto......shutter, aperture priorities or manual.......

On my old Sony Cypershot (which I loved, but got dropped , but still have, unworking, with the lens stuck open...), the flash override was't in the menu, it was on the "up arrow" which had the flash symbol/lighning bolt above it. I think I just had to keep pressing the "up arrow" and it would go through the flash modes until I got to the lighning bolt with a line through it for no flash.
Good luck and good luck with the class!

Yes, you're right ^__^ And I consider myself pretty much walking already. That's why I'm mocking the assignment. Its point was to teach us composition but how can you do anything about that if the photos are full of bright snowflakes due to the flash? :--D

I would've asked if he was there
We talked with my classmates and we were just glad that there were a few people like myself who have done this before and know something about this stuff so we can help the others also.

Yeah, I thought so. The teacher told us to shoot on auto, but I think it was just cos the other modes would've required him to explain how to use 'em. :--D
The outdoor portraits were shot on Aperture mode and the b&w was on Manual.

Good luck and good luck with the class!
Yep, that's how it is in my Cyber-shot H50 also, but not on the Canon.

Sony or Canon, seems to makes no difference to the quality of these excellent portraits, I like both the b/w and colour versions.
Good luck with the course

Hi, Milla! I hope he takes you off the "milk" soon and gives you a little "meat" to work on. You may wind up being a source of information for your classmates.
