Default A few more attempts of Portraiture

Hey everyone, I've really been trying hard to learn about portrait photography and see what all the techniques are, so i decided to photograph my Girlfriend in the simplest of places, her batheroom that had a Flourescent (or "hot") light to experiement with the lighting effects etc... I am quite happy with the results but would love any advice or tips.

Nice shots. She's a very pretty lady and you have taken some good shots under challenging conditions. Fluoros, yuk! Might as well paint their skin green. These came out very well, did you use a preset WB or fix it in post?

A little too much head tilt for my liking in 1, 2 & 4, (makes the eyes too un-level) but at least you had her tilt towards the 'feminine shoulder'. In 1 and 4, I feel that the shoulders are too square to the camera as well. Number 5 is my favourite (you know you're supposed to wait until someone else posts before you post a second set? ), although I like the catchlights in 3 and 6.

Thanks for sharing, sorry for the 'too detailed for Share Your Shots' critique, I got carried away!

Welcome to DPS, I agree with Jim on the technical points - he knows his stuff. You are well on the way to taking good portraits, these are very impressive and your girlfriend is a very attractive model (she looks like a better looking version of Mariah Carey).

Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Hey Jim,

Please dont be sorry! I really appreciate it and as i am soo new to portraiture and to "Posing" the model, it really comes to my benefit to have people critique it in as much detail as possible so for next time, i really can understand what i need to do. Haha i didnt change the white balance at all, and i know Fluro's are least favoured but it's what we had Thanks a lot for your critique on the posing, honestly, i didn't realise it untill you mentioned it and i guess that happens when you're new to all this.

Haha sorry about posting 2 sets at once! I tried to get most of em here :P

I really appreciate your time to have given these pieces of advice and im sure i'll put it all into practice soon. Do you have any idea where i can find a tutorial or lesson on how to pose models? Because we kinda just went with the flow :-)

Kindest regards,

Shayne Thomas

Shayne I PMd you a couple of resources that I recommend quite a bit. One is linked to from a 'sticky' on the DPS photographing people forum, but the other is from a competing photography site and I didn't know how the Mods here would take that.
