Default First good shots with my camera

I'm finally using my Nikon D3000 on manual settings, and from that I've resulted in a few good shots. Here they are:

Red Rose

Sunset in New Norfolk, Tasmania

Rain drops on a rose leaf

Rain drops on a rose leaf (My favourite of the two)

Also, I was wondering if anyone could help me out, I want to enter my dog in a calendar competition but I can't seem to get the right colour quality when I photograph her, or any animals for that matter... Any ideas?

Hi Maggie and a warm welcome to DPS. You made a great start, these pictures are excellent. A lovely vibrant red rose and a gogeous suset. The water drops are so sharp in the last two. This is very nice work. Thank you for sharing them with us. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Enjoy your time here and have fun.

Dave.

Welcome to DPS Maggie! This is a great first post, love the colors and detail. You might want to post your dog's picture along with EXIF data, then maybe you could get some suggestions.

Hi maggie, welcome to DPS. Great job with your manual settings. You've gotten great exposures on all of these shots. There is nothing wrong with your dog photo, it just needs the levels adjusted in post processing. Not shure what processing program you are using, but if you bring up the levels tool and move the center slider to the right it will correct the issue. You could also use the curves tool by pulling the center of the line down to get the same result. Here is your pup with some adjustments..........
