Default Wrestling nightmare

Taking pictures of wrestling at South Kitsap is a nightmare. It's bad enough when the dingy lights are turned on for volleyball and basketball games (ISO 3200, f2.8 at 125th). But for wrestling they turn off all the overhead lights except one overhead spot flood light, which makes it difficult when trying to photograph. SO, I'm posting the first image shot with just the overhead light and other images where I used three Canon 550 EX strobes and my ST-E2 transmitter on camera to fire the flashes.

I used ISO 800. Camera set on manual at f2.8 @ 250th second shutter speed. The flash units were set @ -1/3 power and positioned at one flash at three corners of the mat.

The SK Wolves beat Shelton 75-10 and extended their league winning streak to 165 leading back to their last league defeat in 1992. The pictures are of my son Colin, who wrestles at 103 lbs and unfortunately, he lost this match 9-7, but is 15-2 on the season. Colin is in the maroon.

I find indoor sports one of the more challenging areas of photography. I can't wait to try out my new Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM lens for this purpose.

Great shots.

Thanks Jim for sharing your shots and techniques. I've recently started shooting in Manual mode and have a hard time with any indoor shot let alone sports shots. Too bad about Colin not having the greatest night but it sounds like he's having a great season.
