Default Concepts of Composition : Imbalance

You can intentionally choose to break all the rules, shake up your shots and create imbalance in your images. Try it. It's fun. Experiment and be bold. Look for viewpoints and angles that are intended to disorientate. The object is to unsettle the viewer. The best tool for the job is a fisheye or wide angle lens, neither of which I have yet.

A local building project nearby gave me the opportunity to use their crane as an example, albeit not a perfect one. There are some modern bridge structures about an hours drive away that I will try later.

This was my first attempt at disorientation.

Crane Glossop

This second attempt was my efforts to create a shot where the viewer tries to decide if the crane is holding up the building or vice-versa. There are much better examples in the books, but it's fun trying to capture the concept.

Crane Glossop 2

This is a local derelict bulding nearby where my "imbalance" attempt didn't work, but perspective is interesting I think.

Derelict Bldg Bonk Lane

The next installment is entitled "Line" and just as much fun to achieve. Hope you enjoy participating, and maybe you could post some examples. That would be good.

I am really enjoying your concepts of compositions series. And this is another great post. These are very interesting shots which really challenge the viewer! You have done a great job with all of them. Thanks! And well done with the series - it is a great way to learn.

Hooray, another composition lesson from Paul! I'm really loving these. All three of these photos are terrific, but I think the first disorients me the most! Thanks, Paul. And BTW, what's the name of your book again? I've got a hankering to read it for myself.

Hi Paul ,

Great installment in your "series" . I would have to say the last one I find most disorienting . Its hard to tell if taken from the roof or ground level .
