One of my Christmas presents was a polarizing filter. Just giving it a try.

Nice sky!
Now have fun trying it on water, glasses or any reflecting surface!

You'll never want to be without it now Brian! Just don't drop it in a river like I once did last year. :-(

I hate to be a bubble burster, but...given the position of the sun in your posted photo, I doubt the CP filter had much impact at all on the final photo. They typically can't polarize the light rays if they strike the glass of the filter head on. It helped to slow down your exposure, and probably helped to blanace the overall dynamics, but it didn't actually polarize the light rays very effectively from this position.
CP filters work best when the sun is approximately 90* to the front of the lens. The more crisp your angle to the sun, the better the effects of filtration. They can have a minor impact from head-on or with the sun directly behind you. But the effects of the polarization is greatly reduced in these instances. Look through your viewfinder with the sun at 90* to your side. Turn the filter on the lens, and see how it effects the reflections of light rays from non-metallic surfaces. HUGE difference... Don't get me wrong, it's a nice shot, and a really nice composition. But just as a point of information only, the trees did more to cut down the glare from the sun than did the filter, in this instance. It's just the nature of these filters and how they work... Of course...all of this is assuming that the bright white spot behind the tree limbs on the right is the sun. If that is not the sun, than ignore everything I said, accept "Nice shot" and "Great composition"...

Hi Brian. My birthday coming up, and Polarising Filter is on my list as the next thing I need. I will watch your shots that use it with interest, and let me know what you think. Interesting and useful comments from Eastern Sierra above. I will bear all that in mind when I get one. PAUL
