Default South Haven Lighthouse

When I shot this it was 3:30am and -3° F (-19° C)! On top of that, it was a 1.5 hour drive round trip... But this shot is something I've thought about for a while so when I thought the skies were going to be clear in South Haven (MI) I packed up my camera and headed out there. I got there just in time because clouds were starting to roll in. This photo was taken looking due west, across Lake Michigan. The small hills in the foreground are actually mounds of ice at the edge of the beach (or I think a little further out). I think they form from a combination of surface ice washing (or pushing) up on shore and the waves crashing over them building up even more ice.

If the skies are clear this weekend, I'm thinking about going back and getting a few more with different angles.

Its beautiful. Thanks for braving the cold to share this with us. I wish I were so ambitious. I can't seem to pull myself away from my little heater!

I love that the constellation Orion is so clearly visible! Great shot!

Just Beautiful. South Haven is such a beautiful town, I used to live in Kalamazoo and would be there most summer hanging out so it is nice to see a refreshing shot from Winter. Love it.

Beautiful shot, and so beautifully composed. Love the coloring and the lighting.

That looks so cold! You did a good job on this. Your exposure is spot on.

Thanks everyone. I can't wait to go back a try to get different angles. The problem last time was I didn't anticipate the bitter cold and 3ft of snow. So I only stayed for a few minutes and didn't really move around too much. It was simply to cold and difficult with what I was wearing (which was just a winter coat and shoes).
