HI every one, first of all let me wish all DPS readers a very happy new year 2010.
I was out of DPS for about a week now due to my vacation and fever that followed :-). I'll be sharing the pictures from my trip very soon before that let me end 2009 with another first for me, macro photography. I was dying to try my hand on Macros for a long time now finally i got my Raynox MSN-505 macro adapter on Christmas day which i could test only yesterday. Here are some of the test shots, it was hard to find the right subject, i found some artificial flowers to try out. First impression of my Raynox MSN-505 (US $95 from B&H Photo) 1. This lens is extremely powerful the results are beyond imagination. Way too powerful than some of the dedicated macros out there that cost 5 times more. It does what it promises however don't just jump in and buy it like i did :P because this is not 99% of us want or need because it is so powerful you'll hardly find subject that are tiny enough to get a sharp focus on with this lens. its application is extremely limited for general users. 2. Extremely difficult to get a sharp focus or get a focus on what we want. 3. A tripod is a must, hand held shooting almost impossible. 4. Focusing distance is between only 2mm to 10mm so there is a good chance that you'll damage the lens while moving it for focusing. I tried it on the table and rim of lens was always touching it at best focus. This makes it little impractical. 5. You can precisely focus on one single bud of a flower or a strand of hair with some effort and that's what it is meant to do.However this kind of power will never let you picture a whole flower or portion of a flower or similar. 6.Build quality looks strong and good. With universal snap on mounts onto almost any SLR zoom lens (52-67mm) , point and shoot or a video camera. Due to snap on type adapter mounting on and off is very easy and quick. I used it on my Nikon D60 with 18-55mm kit lens so you can be sure it works with SLR cameras though Raynox advertises it only for P&S and Video cameras even in the instruction manual. So i would imagine my conclusion is choose Raynox DCR-250 (US $57 B&H Photo) which is cheaper and more popular and more practical version since i've seen the results now i'm sure it'll be worth every penny spend on it. Here is a link to my album Picasa Web Albums - AC - Raynox MSN-50... Last edited by atulsc; 01-01-2010 at 01:22 AM. |

I have had a curiosity about these things after reading reviews and they looked alot like your comments....both good and bad......wish there was a good way to try these things out before having to purchase them
