Hi Hayward... and thanks for the welcome. We only have about a dozen covered bridges left in Georgia. Because of their historic significance most are for our pleasure now and not for traffic. I know of only four that still carry vehicles over them.
It is sad, but over time they have been destroyed either by the highway department as new concrete structures take their place, or burned by arsonists. Many are covered in grafitti on the inside. That makes me sad for the generations that follow who may never experience the charm of these lovely structures. They are from an era long ago before super highways and the hustle and bustle of today's life. I am trying to capture them all digitally so my grandchildren will be able to see a glimpse into a past that will seem so foreign to them. I applaud those groups and individuals who have chosen to restore and protect the old covered bridges like the one over Auchumpkee Creek (located in the middle of nowhere, Georgia). |

I love these bridges. Would really like to visit and see them for real. First saw them in the movie Bridges of Maddison County. Shame about vandals, some people have no respect. Thank god for people like you who capture these images, so there will always be some memories for future generations. Nice captures by the way. Keep up the good work.

Your photo inspired me to find this bridges location on Google Earth. I found it, 12 miles South of Thomaston on Allen Rd. There are more photos posted their also. What a wonderful area.

Thanks, folks. I think I've found a new home to share photos and learn so much more from those more experienced. Below is a link to more photos and history on this bridge from my website.

A lovely covered bridge image! I have always been intrigued by them. None here in Texas to my knowledge, but I spent a summer in the 70's in Lancaster PA, heart of the Amish Country, and visited quite a few covered bridges there. At that time, they were preserving and protecting them pretty well. I hope they still are. Thanks for the photos.
