Default The local workhouse

This is St John's Hospital which is slowly closing down (it has been for as long as I can remember!). These building were built in 1889 and served as the workhouse for the local paupers and hard on their luck people. It later became a hospital and now only parts of it remain open, one of which is the maternity ward where I, my wife and all three of our children were born (I hasten to add here, we were not born in a workhouse!)

They are both pretty much the same image except I've added different filters to each.

No 2 has the edge Andrew. I started my nursing career in a cottage hospital that was a workhouse in Worksop, Notts. I remember the coal fire in the centre of the ward and how the Matron always hand served the staff meals. That was in 1964. Memories. PAUL

Nicely captured and commentated on Andy, I like them.
I was born in a maternity hospital that looked very similar, my first son was also born there but its long since been demolished and rebuilt as a walkin centre.
