Actually, I think what you have there is lens flare caused by the reflections between the elements of your lens. This often happens when shooting into the Sun, even if the Sun is off-axis/not in the field of view. Lens flare is sometimes used on purpose as an element of composition and is interpreted by the viewer as the glare that is experienced when looking into the Sun.

Thanks all. My favorite subjects are my kids, but they are hard to shoot!! I am desperately trying to move from just taking snapshots to taking actual photos so any input you have to offer is much appreciated. I took this one at the same time. I like the color but my son was a little out of focus (he usually is
). What could have made this better?
