Default 8 month old child & dog photographs!

Hey Everyone, I'm new to this site, and I figured I post some of my work on here.
Let me know what you think, whether good or bad. Thanks!

I took these photographs a month or so ago, of an adorable 8 month old and her dog. Now, anyone who has ever done pictures with animals know that it's a challenge, add on top of that a baby who doesn't want to stay put!.

i have photographed both and i know how hard it can be to get them to both look at the camera at the SAME TIME. these are lovely. the only thing i would do different (totally a matter of personal preference) is boost the brightness on photoshop. otherwise, they're great.

how did you grab their attention?? i use a rubber chicken that squalks/honks and squeeze it behind my head. heehee!

Both pics, albeit very cute, are very underexposed, and have very harsh shadows (in a nutshell).

Did you by any chance take the time out to review the rules of posting for critique? We'd love to know: which image you'd like critique on, why, and your EXIF. Thanks!

Picklesalt- I had about twenty family members behind me, jumping up and down making fools of themselves! The dog actually was very well behaved, he just sat there!
kgb224-thanks!
susanh- thanks for the advice. I used a photoshop technique that caused the pictures to look like that, wanted to try something different. I would have my 2nd photograph critiqued if i could choose between one of the two. I posted before I read... only one photo a day... I'll have to remember that.
I'm new, i'm guessing the EXIF is what I shoot, and how I shoot??

I'm not a fan of the high contrast, darkness, harsh shadows but you must be since you did it in photoshop. Lol. I prefer it looking more like this.
Photobucket
Brightened the mid value. Made dup. copy layer mask and masked of blown out areas then brightened highlights. Increased saturation. Cloned out some of the stuff on the blanket. Sharpened it.
