Probably one of the most spectacular things to see around the Columbia River Gorge in the winter are the waterfalls when they are frozen. (Granted, they don't freeze completely, they still flow). After about 4 days of temperatures in the teens and 20's, this is what they look like.
I think every photographer in Oregon was crowded around here yesterday braving the cold temps to get a good shot. I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked, and I also forgot the boot to my tripod - so I got what I got... I may try it again this weekend if the temps stay cold!! It's also rare to get a shot without people on the bridge. This time, I couldn't wait too much longer for people to leave the bridge as the sun was beginning to set and losing daylight quickly. Last year I got a great shot here - no onlookers, no photographers, nobody on the bridge.. just me, the only nut who drove in a snowstorm to get a few pictures of Multnomah Falls in the ice. (It was worth it). Multnomah Falls - ![]() ![]() ![]() Horsetail Falls is just a mile or two down the road, and it also looked like a frozen wonderland:
