How do you adequately photograph a Redwood? Well, you can't but you can hint and tell some it's secrets by sharing small details and that is my task today--to give you a sense of being in a Redwood forest. The Henry Coswell Redwoods State Park was within walking distance of the retreat center where I was staying with my family. On Saturday morning I walked over and there I spent three magical hours in these woods. It is much like spending time in a cathedral--you gain a sense of eternity, transcendence and changeless beauty.
The timing for visiting these woods was perfect as I had just finished an amazing book about the hunt for the tallest redwood tree and the study of their canopies entitled "The Wild Trees" by Richard Preston. It is a book of non-fiction that reads like a novel. So here's one amazing fact about the this stand of redwoods. The tallest tree growing here is 270 ft. or 82 meters (not pictured). That is a 100 feet or 30 meters shorter than the tallest redwood on record. Said another way: the average story of a building is 10 feet. This "smaller" tree was a mere 27 stories high. It would be hard to present the series without this song. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hi Lin, another great presentation, you were able to capture the feeling it must be like to be among them. I can imagine myself looking up, tilting my head back so far that it hurts a little and stiil not seeing the tops, but catching a glimpse of the blue sky here and there.
As I mentioned it's on list of places to see, I want to stand under one and put my arms around the truck, just walk thru the forrest and be reminded of the beauty and magnificence of nature on such a grand scale. I really like the different perspectives you used for this set, starting with a long view up and ending with a single twig and needles, it really conveys a sense of being there. and I like the song by Woody... fits perfectly. Vin

A wonderful set, Linda. Though this can't be as good as being there, it has to be the next best thing. I like the perspectives you've chosen here. I know how much you love dappled light and how seldom you get to see it, so that certainly must have been a treat for you. I especially love your last one with the wonderful "sparklies" in the background.

Linda, this is a very nice presentation from the Redwood Forest. You gave us a very good perspective on what it is like to stand within these towering trees and at the same time getting down to the finest detail of their needles painted with sunlight. Very nice, I appreciate this post very much Linda, Thank you for sharing! Good Day, Duane
