Well, the shapes are just coincidence. You keep clicking these drops of water and many are bound to come out in interesting shapes..sometimes its like finding shapes in the clouds.
I used a metal tray under the kitchen tap.Placed some colored shopping bags behind as background and also to cover the not so interesting sink corner.... Placed my camera (Canon Rebel XSi) fixed on tripod ,some four feet from the tray and zoomed in. Then focused on the dripping water. Used a straw to help me focus on a particular point. Used a remote shutter release to click away. Clickind is fun when you start getting your timing right, I used to count between the drops 1....2....3....4.and click and so on. Used aperture 5.6 and exposure at 1/60 (mind you I am very unfamiliar with these yet). I had only the built in flas and the kitchen lights for lighting. I did find that when the water in the tray is less the splash is more and I get more of the crown or ashtray type of splashes...when the water is more in the tray the bounce is duller and comes straighter up. I am sure with proper lighting and props I can get better results. Playing with water is very amusing and reminds me of the small child who would take a bath if he is allowed to splash around by himself a little. |

Thank you for sharing your techniques! Shopping bags on the background are a very good idea.
I will try to play with water too, since I believe it can be a good exercise for photography.
