Default The Gymnastic meet- Part 4 and final set

Hello Friends,

This set will end the series I put together on my Brother's Gymnasts at a meet. Since there isn't a sequence to them and Charlie's not in any of them, I will keep the text short.

This was one of the first I shot, after I zero'd in on settings that would work in the Gym.

It's Titled " 2 against 100" since Charlie has only two level 6 girls and there must have been atleast 100 from the other teams there, so it was them against the masses.

2-Two against 100

Eleanor beginning a tumbling run, the floor exercise event was at the far end of the gym and most of the action shots were too blurry to share, but hold value to my brother for training. She looks focused and determined.

13-Taking off

Amanda also beginning a Tumbling run, her face says it all, I need not say anything else,

16-Amanda Attacks

And I end the series with the last shot I had taken, Eleanor's foot was hurting, both her and Amanda were tired, they did thier best and had fun, the same as me in this series.

26-Hotshots

I hope you all enjoyed the 4 set series, and although I might vent a little frustration at how DPS is changing, I can not stop the change taking place here, I remain loyal to my old friends who got have gotten better with me as we walk the path together and the new friendship that have formed with some of the newer members. I really do cherish the loyality and bonds that have formed and I'm not going anywhere... but I think I may change a little in what and how I present my photos... but there's always flickr if you wanna see my practice projects and experiments.

Thank you all for looking beyond the grainy , out of focus shots and looked deeper into the meaning of the shots, and for the hundreds who viewed and didn't comment you reap what you sow.

Vin - Proud DPS member

Hey Vin, I went out and bought a 50mm 1.8 just so I could get shots bright enough for volleyball in a gym but then struggled with motion going to blur......About the best that I could do was iso 800, f 1.8 and 1/80 sec handheld.....you can imagine that I could never get an awesome spike where the motion frozen still. I wish I knew how pros do it other than having a camera that can handle 16,000 and 32,000 ISO without much image degradation. Maybe that is the secret.....$$$$$.

Love how you've captured many emotions in your series Vin. My favorite in this set is number three. A great capture of this girls focus as she eye balls her mark. As I said in a comment to a previous thread of yours - I am a fan.

Just wondering if you have ever viewed any of my posted photo's?

Thanks for taking time to share a 4 part series of action pictures. You have not only shared pictures but your life with us your DPS family.

Have you tried converting the grainy pics in b/w?

Rick

Vin, these have all been wonderful to see. There is such intensity and concentration in these young girls, that sense of being totally focused and in the present moment. And I especially love the contrasting emotions in the first and the fourth -- the anticipation at the beginning and the exhaustion at the end. I'm so glad you've posted this series for us. I'm one of the new ones who has really appreciated your postings, both your photos and your kind and generous comments. So I want to say that I'm really glad you're not going anywhere, and also ... from my heart ... thank you. I'll look for you on Flickr!

Thank you Nikki and you are exactly one of the members I referred to when I mentioned new friendships.. oh don't worry, I'll still be Vin, but I don't want to be frustrated sitting here wondering why something I put so much into a post that goes 10 pages back in 1/2 a day, viewed 100+ times and get comments from only my good friends, for a guy like me it brings me down, I'm a little too intense and take things to heart too much, but I am working on it.
So from now on, I think I'll only be posting photos I judge as high quality here at DPS... cause I have to change too

Thanks very much Patrick, the Nifty-50 is one of the most valuable lense money can buy. There was a Professional there, he was using a canon MarkV III and a 2.8L canon lense, for canon users that's about the best it gets unless you go to a prime lense and then you lose the telephoto ability. We talked a little and he said his success rate was about 10% keepers and man he was snapping away the whole time. I think unless you can get really close to the volleyball court, your gonna get blur regardless , 1/125-1/160 is probably the slowest to get any kind of clarity on the hands and the ball... it very difficult even with the best gear.
If you look at the properties , I shot mostly at 1600 iso , it added noise and grain to the shots, but I wasn't gettng much at 400 or even 800. I think having a full frame camera body helps alot... but still 10% keeper ratio should tell you it's even hard for a pro.

Thanks Brian, I'm glad you enjoyed the series and can appreciate the point of the photos, And I pretty much view all of the contributions on SYS.. so please don't take my comments at the end personally, I've seen your posts and if I happened to not comment it was probably due to it being late and having dozens to view... But I will make this commitment , from now on I will seek out Stormfan's posts and leave a comment if I can catch it before it gets buried too deep ... I can always add another friend who enjoys my work and who shares for my enjoyment

Hi Vin - and here we are .... the finale of this magnificent set of yours ... I've felt the pain of these young athletes .. but most of all, I salute your brother for his unselfish dedication to this "girls".... maybe someday, one of them will excell to a higher level of competition .. no once during this 4set series of yours did I look at the quality of your images .. I only saw what you want us to see and they were magnificent .. images of the fruits of your brother's dedication to his craft ... bravo my friend
