As promised, another more general shot of the Mad max Location. You can still see much of the copper mine excavations. I have no idea what the structures were used for. On my visit, the weather was no too kind to us and all my shots were taken under shady conditions. I intend to go back again in 2010 and also on a fine day. Some of the pools of water are amazingly colourful. There are problems with groundwater leaching through the subsoil of the surrounding area. nothing seems to grow for miles. There is also a strong smell that I think is sulphur. Quite an incredible and unique place.

Hi Jack
The precise location is the Mina de Sao Domingos. It is located about 12 km north of Mertola in the Alentajo area of Portugal. It was abandoned in 1968 as far as I know. The mining company built a village close by for the workers with church, school, etc. The rows of small cottages have mainly been converted into larger family homes. I would imagine most of the people here work either in Mertola or Beja which is the main city of the Alentajo. I love the Alantejo area it has a rural charm, produces, in my opinion the best wine in Portugal. The mine is about 60 km from my home in the Algarve. Thanks for your interest

Nice photo. I live in a mining community and those look like mine shafts... essentially they house the "elevators" that bring the workers & equipment underground.

I would have thought that too except this is an open cast mine - there is nothing underground as far as I could see.

There's an odd appeal to landscapes that look more like moonscapes or, at least, other worldly. Your description of the smell of sulphur add a chilling note. Intriguing.
