Default Charlie and His Gymnasts Part 2

If you had seen the First set of Coach @ work, we ended with Eleanor upset at getting a low balance beam score and I promised to show her redeeming herself. So here is her Vaulting sequence, using my 100-400m , thanks goodness I practiced panning and continuous shooting on the model airplanes and barn swallows, I was able to quickly switch over to fast shooting without having to guess and fumble. this happened in about 1 1/2 seconds if that long.

Again, keep in mind, it wasn't very bright for camera standards, flourscent lighting and I was pretty far away , but moved up to balcony, which I didn't see when I got there, but a kid dropped a candy wrapper and I looked up lol.

This is " Spring " Eleanor's approach off the spring board,

23-Spring

Strenght, notice her excellent form

24-Strenght

I titled this " Distance " , she is now relying on hundreds of practice vaults and her instinct ( just like photography )

21-Distance

and altough she didn't stick the landing ( most level 6 gymnasts don't ) because as my brother explained they want them to concentrate on form and not think about the landing or that's all they will think about... she did do quite well and got a very good score

25-I Told You !

Charlie also explained to me how much a handshake after a good proformance means to them... they are treated like an adult and that means so much to fragile egos.

Stay tuned for part three comming to a theatre near you soon !!

Vin

Oh so glad I did not go to bed yet. FANTASTIC! Again the last one sums it all up! Wonderful story and fabulous work. You should make a book or collage for your brother.

Hello Vin, I like the way you captured the girls without any blur in that low light situation. Very good captures.

You must have used a very powerful telephoto lens with these shots. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, keep these coming, please! I hope that your brother and his young gymnasts are thrilled with your photos, and I'll bet their parents would be delighted. This is such a fun series, Vin, and I'm amazed at the way you've managed such clarity in a difficult situation. Thanks for sharing them!

Thanks Michele, no collage BUT he's gonna get a 14x22 framed version to hang on his office wall, so that anyone at our company ( we both work for the same company ) who wants to know what Charlie really does when he leaves the office, will know !, but I fot alot of post work to do on it before I'll show it anyone.

Thanks Micheal.. I was talking to the Pro Potog the host gym hires to shoot meets and he was telling me even with his 2.8 70-200m and a Mark5III he still has to deal with hand and feet blurr.. Bit I think I did pretty good for the first time .

Thanks Rick, in this set it was my 100-400m 4.5-5.0 " L" lense, but it was pushed to it's limit.

Thanks Helen, I have 2 more sets to share , I know charlie wanted to use some of the shots as a training aids to let them see thier form, he's gonna get the photos that meet my minimum standards ( these 4 sets ) on a dvd, I've already emailed him them, Buit I'm not printing them -too expensive , if the kids want to pass along the dvd to have them printed, or if Charlie emails them the files and they printed them it's cool with me. glad ya like them.

I've been told that you can't photograph electricity. I swear I see it in that handshake flowing from your brother's hand to Eleanor. Only they both have mastered the "game face" to perfection. I bet she'll look at this photo 20 years from now and still feel the spark! Ditto I thought only birds could fly. Vin, what a great set. You, yourself seem to be preparing for liftoff!
