What a fun photo -- I love the way the coach looks so dwarfed by his team! Thanks for sharing it.

Went to Flickr and looked at all your basketball photos! I'm so envious! My husband is a basketball Ref and my son a player, I would love, love, love to be able to capture in gym photos the way you have! Awesome! If you have any tips, I'm ready to learn!

Well sports photography, and basketball specifically, is very gear-centric. You'll need a camera body that can shoot high FPS at high ISO and you'll need fast lenses with apertures of f2.8 or larger.

Nikon I'd recommend a D90 or D300 or better.
Canon I'd recommend a 50D or better.

Lenses is where you'll spend the most money. Don't be afraid to drop a lot of coin on lenses because they can easily last you 10-15 years while bodies typically are replaced every 2-3.

I started with a 17-50mm f2.8 but I've recently switched to my 70-200mm f2.8 lens because I like that range better.

Shoot wide open at f2.8 and at a high ISO/shutter speed. Probably 1/500 and ISO1600 will work.

If you want to use flashes like I do, that'll be at least another $500. The cheapest flash you can get is the LumoPro LP120 for $130 each ( LumoPro LP120 Manual Flash ). Add wireless transmitters (Cybersyncs) for 2 flashes and that'll get you up to about $450 before tax/shipping.

Let me know if you're all set up with this stuff or not and I can help ya from there!
