Today, I went for a 4 hour walk and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Here are 4 of my favorites from today.
Winter Preview. ![]() Redbellied Woodpecker. I've been trying SOOOO hard to get a decent shot of one of these since I first saw one about a month ago and this is the best I've got so far. Not the best I know, but I'm proud to have captured one you can actually see. My 40-150mm lens is sort of limited and these birds tend to stay higher in the trees than a Downy or Hairy woodpecker. ![]() A Downy Woodpecker Checking out my lens. Best viewed large. I captured this one about 9 feet off the ground and probably 10-15 feet from me. It was going crazy drumming on the tree. If you can't tell, I like woodpeckers. ![]() ![]() Thanks for looking!

Great set of bird shots. I like the close up shot of the woodpecker the best.

Thanks! I really like the Downy a lot, but I think the Redbellied is my favorite, too.
Not because it's the best of the bunch, but because I've been trying for about a month to capture one and victory is sweet. Up until about a month ago, I'd never seen one all my life. Now that I know where they live, and their calls, I see them every time I go into the woods and being a nature lover, it's kind of exciting for me to see new birds. Today, I saw my very first Bluebird, too. However, when I tried to get a couple feet closer, the small group flew off and I couldn't track them very far with my poor eyesight. I'm just contemplating my next lens purchase, now. I think I need a little more reach than the " kit " quality lenses that I have (35mm macro, 14-42, 40-150). I'm debating on the Olympus kit version of 70-300 or something similarly affordable with a little more reach. I'd love better glass, but given how much I've spent recently, the wife isn't willing to allow 600+ lenses. Anyway, thanks for the comments!
