Default Rain at Night in Downtown Vancouver

I was in Vancouver with a few friends and my wife, Mary, and took these shots as I was walking down the streets at night. It was raining quite steadily, but I was up for the challenge. This is the first time I had ever attempted night shots so be kind. The ISO setting was at about 800 most of the night, except in the Frosted Glass shot, which was about ISO 500. I have to admit that I was inspired by Paulete Matos in terms of ideas, especially the reflection shot. Check her work out as she is very creative in terms of use of natural lighting etc, and composition. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy these, or at least get inspired to try night photography in the rain.

Glad you were inspired Paul, these are great mate, you've captured a feeling of quietness and loneliness in the street scenes and I like the b/w treatment and how you've presented them

Great b&w shots of the quiet streets Paul. I especially like the shot of the frosted glass, you did great with the dof and the detail of the trickle.

Glad you took your camera along Paul. This is a great set of captures, esp the reflections in No3 which is my favourite. Consider me duly inspired my freind. PAUL

I love these night captures Paul, especially the third shot with the reflections. We spent some time in this city about two years ago and loved the street life and the architecture, eg: lots of glass, thanks for sharing. Also look great in B and W cheers Steve.

A wonderful set Paul, I like the mood set in the first shot and the reflections in the third. The bw treatment is also really good. TFS

A lovely set Paul (but you forgot to convert the last one, I spy a bit of colour in there still...hehe). There's something about rainy scenes that gives off a very distinct mood in photographs and you've captured it so perfectly in yours. I especially love the 3rd photo - love the reflections, shadows, lighting and movement of the passers by. I did like how you used your depth of field to highlight the frostiness on the glass though.

Hi Greg. The lightingwas fabulous, and like I said earlier in the original post, I was very inspird by Paulete Matos' work. She shooots with natural light in very high contrast llighting situations, and leaves areas totally blown out at times. Thanks, mate.

Hello my friend. You know me, always looking for inspiration. It was interesting using high ISO settings to shoot at night, and the challenge of trying to focus in relatively poor light. I may buy one of those focus screens with the split image etc. I have missed that feature of the old film cameras, and want it back. The only problem is that they cost about $200 CAD. Maybe next year.

Hi Angelb. That was a fun shot and took me a number of attempts to get it right.

H Steve. Thanks for the comments, and I have really been enjoying your B&W work as of late, when I get a chance to break away from my teching work. Thanks, mate.

Hello Nicky. Glad you found something to enjoy in these shots. Thanks so much for your detailed comments.

I apologize for the quick reply to everyone's comments, but I am teaching full time again (no student teacher) so I must be brief.
