This is an absolutely beautiful photo of the nuthatch. It is tack sharp and well composed. I love the dark non-obtrusive background. Great job!

Actually about 15 feet away ;-)
I found a stump that was in the light .. planted a dead branch just behind the stump .. put a bit of bird seed on the stump and waited a bit ... pre focused about 1 inch in front of the branch .. and this is the result .. not a bad technique

Beautiful shot, love the light. Lots of patience required for wildlife. When you pre-focused the shot did you use a target then remove it?

Yes I put another branch in front of this one .. pre focused manually .. took the lens off auto focus and sat there with my remote in hand until one of the birds landed in the right spot ;-)
