Default Going Hungry

I spotted this Hawk as he flew to the top of a light pole to have his mid-afternoon snack. As I was making my way closer, I was taking a few shots along the way. I guess he got a little over zealous in eating and dropped his snack. I was able to capture this photo as he was watching it fall. Now to the surprise of not only me but I'm sure the hawk also, a stray dog made a mad dash and grabbed the dropped catch. The dog proceeded to head into the thick brush before I or hawk could react. I couldn't even get the camera on the dog before he disappeared. The hawk then flew away to continue looking for a new meal I would guess. I'm curious to see if this is something this dog has learned or just a fluke, so I'll be watching this area a little closer.

Heavy crop as I still wasn't close enough when everything went to the dogs.

Great shot, Fred. I'm surprised the hawk didn't go after the dog. I'll be darned if I'd watch my lunch walk away!

Thanks Christi, I can understand not getting the shots on the Interstate, but maybe you'll find one in a better place and get the shot.

Thanks Mike, I think it all happened just too fast. I don't know where the dog came from, as I didn't see it around anywhere. I can only speculate that this has happened before and he was hiding and watching.

Thanks JR, I know what you mean if we could read his thoughts I am sure he was really giving the dog a good cursing.

great story behind the shot Bud ! the dog Scores !!
and for not getting very close, it's a damn good shot... man you got Hawks and Osprey..one of the first photos, in fact my first post was of a red tail and I've not seen one since, though I am always looking..

I am jealous of where you live... it's warm and you got all kinds of raptors. I'm just glad my friend Fred lives there to show me them

I like it Fred, a quality picture of great detail and colour.
You can almost feel the disappointment as the bird watches his dinner fall and get nicked by a crafty canine. Looking forward to the results of your ongoing observations
