Default Hooded Merganser - male and female

Saw these two just going in circles at a local pond. The male is a really neat colored bird. I walked around the pond four times, but could never really get close enough to get a great shot. You might want to click on the larger image to see them:

I love these photos and I appreciate the frustration at not getting closer. I often circle my local watering-hole trying to catch similar ducks, they seem to know how far my 300mm can reach...then they drift a little further away.

They look absolutely great to me Kirb. Beautiful creatures. The male looks like an oil painting. Would they crop to enlarge the pair of them without compromising? I enjoyed viewing these. Thanks. PAUL

These are beautiful ducks. You've done a great job of shooting them. Had you cropped them in photoshop, the ducks would appear larger. This could have handled the inability to get closer. Just an idea.

They are already cropped quite a bit . They were quite far away, these were taken at 300mm on my D5000.

It is funny how the males are so brilliant and the females are plain....nice set.

Nice series.. these are really hard to get close too, been around the pond a few times myself ;-) Sometimes it's better just to stay low in one place and let them get close to you..

What a beautiful pair. I love the little tuft on the female's head. Great shots!

Wow! That's one stunning bird. Keep at it! I'd love to see a close up of that face. TFS
