I have no suggestions on shooting these as I've never taken this type of shot. I can say they are great shots and very interesting in how the lightning is horizontal and not vertical. Nice!

Focus is going to be complete luck...unless you set focus to infinity and hope the lighting strike is beyond your lens' infinity distance. Either that, or stick a big iron pole 50 meters away from you and focus on IT..and hope the lightning hits it!!

Cool shots anyway! Thanks for sharing!

Awesome shots. I have never shot lightening before, would love to do so though, so unfortunately I cant offer any advice. Cool shots though.

Yeah, that would do it. Let me know how it works. Can I have any lenses that survive?

I remember those storms when I lived there....awesome and fearsome all at the same time. Great shots.

Use Bulb setting on your camera if you do have such a setting and if you have a shutter release cable it will help to take better quality lightning pictures.

Agree totally. But 50 meters might be a touch too close for lighting, maybe go out 100 meters.

I enjoyed these. Were you watching a display of anvil crawler lightning? That first shot looks like it might have been.
