Default Heron at the lake with 70-300VR

People were asking the other day how is the Nikon 70-300VR for birds. Well its ok if they are not moving. The autofocus is kind of slow and it is not a very fast lens. I caught a Grey Heron at Shongum Lake in NJ the other day with that lens on my D5000. I fired away but many shots were missed as the lens just could not focus fast enough in the grey haze. I really wish I had my 70-200 f/2.8 at the time. Here are some of the better
ones:

The look great to me, you've caught some great action shots. If the herons in your area are as wary as here then you did very well getting within range with the 70-300.

#1 is very nice, looks to be really sharp, good feather detail. Zooms tend to be slow to focus on BIF but this lens seems ok for the last 3.

"its ok if they are not moving", he says then posts two in flight and one dancing!

The last one just after take off with the 'footsteps' still rippling away, is a fabulous shot! I spent ages and I still can't tell where the water reflections end and the 'real' trees start. It's like a 'no horizon' shot, intriguing. TFS.

Really nice set of shots. I, too, like the last one best. Its the color and the DOF that really makes it stand out.
