Default Shooting a band in a pub

My skills as a photographer really got tested this past weekend. The lead singer for a band that my wife and I follow asked me to photograph their show because of the recent improvements in my work that he'd seen.

I've posted a few of the best photos in this set.

Here's my best shot of the night. I was actually brave (or stupid, depending on your perspective) enough to use off-camera lighting in a pub. The light hitting him in front is my flash, not stage lighting (the ambient levels were horrible).

LumoPro LP120 far camera left, 1/4 power I think, snooted, triggered via Cactus V4, held by my carbon based light stand (aka my wife).

Camera: Nikon D60
Exposure: 0.05 sec (1/20)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 18 mm
ISO Speed: 800

Now that's funny!!! You did really well under the conditions.

I like the shot. I do a lot of shoots at bars and clubs and always have trouble with the lighting. I just picked up a 50mm f/1.8 and I can't wait to try it out at the next gig I go to.

I stole the term from David @ Strobist. Fortunately, my wife actually enjoyed being involved in that way. Thanks!

Thanks. Yeah, lighting is definitely challenging. My next lens would be a Nifty Fifty, but my D60 won't autofocus the most common (and cheapest) one available. Given the highly mobile performers in most shows (and the challenge of focusing in low light anyway) I'll wait until someone produces a cheaper DX 50mm f/1.8 and use flash when I'm allowed.

Nice work! I love the perspective. And you did a great job with the lighting. Flashes scare me, personally

Tested, eh? You pass with honors! That first shot should be in a magazine!
