There is no exact science to photographing the moon for the amount of light which reflects off it can very throughout the various phases of the moon. In my experience, shutter speeds of 1/250 or higher get the best results and detail for the moon is rotating as we capture it. Slower speeds will often result in some blur. I normally use an ISO of 200+, thus allowing for faster shutter speeds. I would also suggest bracketing once in a while to help get the proper exposure. In a nut shell, photographs of the moon will take experimentation and practice.

As for the tripod, if it is heavy and sturdy enough, you should be fine using what you already have. However, many tripods sold today are too light to handle a dslr and long lens even if you are using a remote switch or self-timer.

I hope this helps and thanks for commenting.
