Default The Chronically Insane of Massachusetts

Grafton State Hospital was a psychiatric hospital for the chronically insane in Grafton, MA, operating from 1901-1973. Now, much of the site is occupied & has been redeveloped by Tufts University's School of Veterinary Medicine where I worked until December last year. The buildings are beautiful - some have been wonderfully redeveloped & are in use as school buildings, but sadly some (like this one) remain in their original state due to the incredible cost of renovation due to asbestos within.

Just thought I'd share a couple of snaps with you - I don't have any scary Halloween shots, but I think the hospital buildings would make for a great Haunted House venue this time of year!

I liked this one in B&W (I've been hanging out with Diz too much, he's beginning to influence me).

I preferred this one in color though!

Great photos! I like the trees in the b/w one. But the stair case is my favorite - LOVE the feel of the colors.

These two photos bring back memories of a movie made in 1948 called The Snake Pit. It probably featured institutions like this one. The movie actually lead to reform in mental hospitals. Well, such is the life of a photo. It starts in the imagination of the photographer and is then passed to viewers who bring their own stories and flights of imagination to bear. I like them both very much.

Hello Nicky, its so sad to see old buildings get so run down, but I guess thats life. Love thw second shot with the stairs, very rustic feel.
