Default Nature can be Unusual

Went for a bush walk out at Lake Rotokere on Christmas Day 2008 and found this unusual beauty nestled amongst leaves on the forest floor. There were a few others that were closed up but they didnt come out very clear. I have never seen another like this. I think it is fungi... but could be wrong! Anyone able to tell me what it is?

I think you're correct that it's some kind of fungus, but perhaps an alien spore? .. great colours, great shot

I couldn't tell you, but I would be afraid to touch it....waiting for teeth to suddenly appear.
Maybe it is something along the lines of the mushroom?

I have tried finding on the internet to no avail. It does remind me though of the Little Shop of Horrors LOL

Facinating. I suspect some form of 'slime mold'. I hope someone can find out for certain.

Sorry can't help with what it is, but it sure looks interesting and kinda slimey. Great shot of whatever it is.

I would get a stick and collect it... then take it in to a plant store to see if they can identify it. That is really interesting!

It looks to me like the sea anemone fungus (or a close relative):

Nice capture!
