Default College basketball kickoff

We have this thing called midnight madness ... it's a little crazy. The women's team rode in on a fire truck.

Shot for The NewsHouse (click for full article).

Midnight Madness - Oct. 16, 2009
D700+24-70mm f/2.8
34mm, 1/100s, f/2.8 @ ISO3600

Midnight Madness - Oct. 16, 2009
Nikon D3+70-200mm f/2.8
98mm, 1/500s, f/2.8 @ ISO3200

Midnight Madness - Oct. 16, 2009
D700+24-70mm f/2.8
55mm, 1/1250s, f/2.8 @ ISO3200

As an aside, I'm beginning to thing the positive pressure inside the Dome gives me headaches.

No, the upside-down snowboard trampoline guy was with the 70-200. I have more (duh), which I'll post later. I was shooting D3/D700 with 70-200/24-70.

Nice shots, Jamie! Thanks for the inspiration to shoot indoor basketball. I tried once when I first got my D3, but was afraid to shoot too high of an ISO for fear of being too noisy. Consequently, my no-flash shots looked like crap! I'm glad to see that good shots are possible indoor with that lighting. What WB did you use? Thanks for sharing!

Auto WB, the Dome is screwy. Daytime games are about 3500K 0 tint (maybe +2 or 3), nighttime ... looks like somewhere between 3000 and 3300 with -5 tint. The roof is translucent. I was shooting 14-bit NEF, so I wasn't terribly worried about nailing the white balance in camera. I just figured out one frame, then applied the same WB to all the images in LR. Some of the images needed a little further tweaking, but you'll always have that.

I about died when they turned the lights off on us. I was all set up for aperture-priority, auto-ISO with a 1/800+3200 ceiling, but then it went totally dark. Quickly raised the ceiling to 6400 and flipped over to manual.

I'll be interested to see real-world samples from the D3s. I don't think I'd actually shoot up at 12,800 for this kind of thing, but it must be even better in the 1600-3200 range.

Thanks for the info. I've another phot opp at a basketball game coming up. I'll try a few different methods.

I, too, am looking forward to the D3s. I hope they improve the NR for 12,800...so far I haven't been impressed at 6400. I may pick one up and make it my primary. Although, there are rumors that a D4 is coming in late 2010...but if Nikon follows their history, it'll be 2 years after the D3s is introduced. We'll see...

Thanks again!

Thom Hogan says Summer 2011, which fits in with their history. Revisions (s models) don't have a whole lot of bearing on overall product cycles.

The trick with using high ISOs is getting a good exposure in the first place. If you need to push a high ISO image, it's going to get ugly. It's actually probably best to expose +0.3 or so (just don't clip highlights), then pull it back.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a try at the next indoor event and will post the results. Thanks again.
