Post My light box project

I had Wednesday off from school and work, which is rare, so I decided to be productive. I decided to make a light box. The whole project cost me 9 bucks (could've been cheaper) and I spent about 2 hours making it and taking the pictures. It is very easy to do, and fun.

This is the complete set up with wax paper, a cardboard box, white matte poster board paper, two fluorescent lamps, and a camera and tripod of course.

This is my best one so far, I want to try new things too. I was inspired by a shot I saw on the DPS homepage ( that's why I love DPS). I want to do something with oil and food coloring.

I took this one (above) with my 24-55mm canon lens, but sometimes I like to use my 300mm lens w/ macro depending on the size of the subject.

You may notice the blue tint the last two have. These were some of my first shots, and I learned a trick to get rid of the blue tint. You would think setting the WB on fluorescent would make it ok but that's what I had it on, so I changed it to sunlight and that takes care of the blue tint as seen in the photo of the wine glass. So for the price, I am liking the quality just as long as I can keep the blue tint out.

Nice results! You've inspired me to try this...what are the dimensions of the box you used?

I would use the custom WB setting on your camera and snap a pic of the background and use that as the WB standard for your shots in the box. I use Custom WB whenever I am taking a lot of photos within the same lighting area and I think it works much better than the presets.

Hi, i recently completed this project too. It only cost me about $40, i made it out of a beer carton, hence the $40... I had something nice to drink while i was making it too.

I don't know the dimensions, I cut that part out of the box. Just go to Wal-mart and they will have a section for boxes, just take one and make it into a box and see if it is big enough for your needs. The bigger the box is the more wax paper, and light you will need to cover bigger objects.

The wax paper goes on the top and sides, it is used to spread the light evenly throughout the box.
